How to set up Korg NanoKONTROL 2 MIDI controller on Mac & Logic Pro

I use the Korg Nanokontrol 2 on my iMac with Logic Pro. It’s my MIDI controller for manipulating dynamics, expression, vibrato, mic settings and much more. But I also use the buttons for stop, play, record etcetera. So for me this is a very convenient small and affordable MIDI controller. How to set it up on your Mac just like I did, is what I’m going to show you in this video.

I have found setting up the Korg NanoKontrol 2 and keeping it working with Logic, both unintuitive and unreliable, but your instructions have been extremely helpful. Your setup instructions meant that I had a system that was working very well until I upgraded to Monterey, and then the arrangement with the NanoKontrol 2 stopped. I have just set it up again, again following your instructions in this video, and once again the setup works. I now have CC control again using the sliders and knobs and, amazingly enough, all the transport controls started working without my having to go through the 'learning' process. So a very big 'thank you' from me.

Extremely helpful video. Thank you! Question...I just updated to Monterey and the nanokontrol2 sliders are controlling the mixer faders in Logic. I have the sliders on the nano set to control a CC value for, for example, modulation. The nano does stop moving the mixer sliders if I delete it from Control Surfaces in Logic. I'd prefer not to have to do that every time I open a new session. Can you help? Thank you so much!

Important: mine did not work until I went to LogicPro->Control Surfaces->Set up...->New and uncheck "Automatic Installation" menu, BEFORE the nano is plugged in. Otherwise, Logic kept adding the nano as a Control Surface over and over after your uninstall steps. Hope this helps. Ran me around for hours after your steps still didn't work. Thanks for the help.

Thanks so much Gh0stwrit3r for this superbly informative explanation. The only problem I have is that, despite choosing 'No' when asked if I want Logic to auto assign the controller, it still seems to add it to the Control Surfaces Setup automatically. Then none of the CC values work and the transport buttons turn red. Do you know of a way of preventing this from defaulting to this set up? If I manually delete the NanoKontrol 2 from the Control Surface Setup then it works as you described. But this a pain to have to do this every time I open Logic.

Not sure what you mean Mark. So I give you my best try., If you did an auto assign when starting up Logic and you need to reset this, you probably need to delete all files and settings like I have showed in the video. So a clean install. To my knowledge, you can't assign the sliders to the channel sliders like that. Those are linked to each other when the KORG is in mix model. Hope this makes sense.

A very helpful, clear and detailed video. Unfortunately, however, it still didn't work for me in Catalina. Initially, I thought it had, but after a little wile I realised that certain sliders and pots were not working at all. I mean: dead! I use the NK2 particularly for VSL's Synchron player and all Kontakt libraries, but I found that certain cc numbers simply would not work at all. Absolutely incredible. I went back to a back up of Mojave and verified that the unit worked 100% in that OS, but, for some bizarre reason it fails in Catalina. Even MIDI learn fails on certain sliders or pots. Equally strange, I loaded up a Spitfire instance, as described, and found that the vibrato (cc 21) didn't work, but instead it had "moved" it to cc17! Utterly inexplicable! I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Korg software, etc., many times, but it just won't resolve the issue. So now, in Catalina, I'm sad to say I can only use it partially. I've also tried changing the USB port. Nothing. But, anyway, your instructions are great. It's nothing to do with that. Thank you.

Thanks so much for the fantastic and simplistic explanation of the Nanokontrol DAW control surface installation and setup process. I just purchased one and this video was really helpful. However, I am having issues when trying to use it in the "DAW" mode instead of the "CC" mode. The transport buttons are working fine. However none of the individual channel strip buttons including the fader, knob, solo, mute and arm button are working for the individual tracks. As per Korg manual, by default it is supposed to control a set of 8 tracks, and it is shown by a white line marker beside the tracks. Any suggestions will be really helpful, since I am struggling with this for now. Not sure, if I am making any mistake of the unit is faulty.

I’ve installed everything correctly for the NanoKontrol but i’m looking to use it like a regular mixing desk that can control a bank of 8 channels at a time with the simple functions (solo, mute, record arm) that are on the unit itself. The logic default setup makes it impossible to do that as only the 8th fader controls the individual fader of a selected track. Has anyone else had this issue? If you activate “learn CC” in your DAW you can assign the different faders, knobs etcetera to that specific CC setting. That will always work. Default CC settings in most orchestral libraries are CC1 for modulation, CC11 for expression and CC21 for vibrato. You can find them in the manuals of the libraries.

The ones located vertically above the pan knobs in each strip on the nano. I would love to be able to selectively mute or solo groups of tracks from my Control surface. Can this be done? I I am a legally blind person with Low Vision. It was very nice of you to describe all the things that you did instead of simply pressing buttons and expecting the viewer to see and read everything on screen. Again, I hope there is a method by which I can assign the mute, solo, record and select buttons while still remaining essentially in the assigned mode instead of going into the dah mixer approach for logic.

@@gh0stwrit3r Hey! I did do every step in the video and I have all the recent versions of Logic and OS, but I think I actually fixed the problem! Admittedly, there were two variables in my process; the less likely one was that I changed USB ports. The likely fix was a quick almost hidden change in the logic preference. It seems that Logic, without warning, was continuing to install Korg as a daw controller without even asking. So the fix is to delete everything as you said, but additionally, in the the "Control Surface Setup" window you must hit the "new" dropdown menu and make sure "Automatic Installation" is unchecked. I hope this is clear enough, cheers!
