♫ After buying this tiny great midi controller for the purpose of fade in and fade out sound (like orchestral sounds), I had a hard time to set it with reaper DAW.
On youtube there are some videos but it didn't work quite well for me. So After struggling during hours and hours (until 2 am) I somehow managed to figure it out. I thought it would be cool to release a video so you guys can set up easily this midi controller. Because after all, this is a very good quality over price ratio for a midi controller.
♫ I compose with Reaper DAW and several VST. I am interested in video games and movie trailer music. So Check my channel and if you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know in the comments section.

    Hi everyone. Some people experiences issues with PLUGINS folder. I just extracted (2 min ago, as I changed PC) all the Klinke files in [C:\Program Files\REAPER(x64)\Plugins\] and it worked well for me. However, some other user (thanks @Atezian !) pointed out, there seems to be another folder where you are supposed to extract files. I didn't see it but it is written in the PDF file included in the Klinke extractable files, in the "installation" section. For that : - Open REAPER, click on [Options>Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder ...] - Go to [UserPlugins] - Extract all the Klinke files in the [UserPlugins] file here. For me it worked the same way as extracting it in the PLUGINS folder of Reaper. But I hope this can help !

    All you have to do before connecting the nanoKONTROL 2 to your computer is hold down the SET MARKER button along with the main RECORD button, and then plug in your USB cable. This will load the template for Cakewalk Sonar. You’ll notice the record button blinks a few times after it’s connected, to let you know you’re in Sonar mode. Although that template is designed for Cakewalk Sonar, it works perfectly for Reaper, if you set Reaper correctly: 1. Start Reaper of course… and then go to Reaper’s PREFERENCES (CTRL-P), go into Control Surfaces (left menu, near the bottom). 2. Click ADD and Reaper will ask you what kind of Control Surface Mode…. choose “Mackie Control Universal.” 3. Then choose your MIDI input and output to be “nanoKONTROL2”. Done. Now, once you’ve exited Preferences, you’ll see that the nanoKONTROL2’s buttons respond perfectly in Reaper… all mute/solo/arm record buttons work for every track, the faders work for the track volumes, and the knobs work for the track panning. You’ll also notice the transport controls (RECORD, PLAY, STOP, REWIND, FF) all work in Reaper as well, and of course.. the SET MARKER and marker left/marker right buttons all work, too. If you have more than 8 tracks loaded (say, 16, or 24), you can use the TRACK buttons to navigate your track groups.

    For those people like me who could only get response from the pan controls - make sure the nanoKontrol2 is in SONAR mode. You can set this in the Korg Kontrol editor under Control/Common/Control Mode. Or it can be set by unplugging the USB cable then re-plugging while holding down SET and the Record button - the record button will flash.

    At 5:36 you illustrate a problem with the knobes in Option 1. To fix this you need to use the "Mackie Control Protocol B (Klinke v0.0.03)(dev 4.4)" which is a slight update from the one you are using in this video for Mackie Control of Reaper.

    Dear Scott Riley, thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it ! Makes me happy whenever I can help someone. Currently I don't know how to combine both method, as one is automatically taking on the other. What I would recommend is to use the second method and to reassign each fader to different track (track 1, 2 ... 8) and each button manually..this is actually what I use. Since I rarely use the 8th fader for track volume control, I keep the 8th fader to personnaize it for dymnamic controls. If I have a cue I'll tell you. Cheers !

    Hi, thank you for sharing this workaround. I'm looking into buying one of these and I have a question. I have seen that the faders/knob will work in groups of 8 tracks (1-8, 9-16, 17-24 and so on). So let's say I have set the volume/pan for the first 8 tracks (1-8) (therefore the faders/knob will not be centralized) and I'll move to the next 8 tracks (9-16). Suppose also that tracks 9-16 already have volume/pan set on DAW and that I just want to slight adjust them. To be more precise, let's say that pan 1 will be at at 8 o'clock in the nanokontrol and the pan at track 9 in the DAW is at 1 o'clock. The moment I try to adjust the pan in this track, it will bring the pan from 1 to 8 o'clock (therefore messing my previous setting on the DAW)? If so it seems a major issue if you work with multiple tracks. Sorry for the long question.

  • @Manhsterz

    @Manhsterz

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey thanks for your feedback. This is actually a very good point... I never used the knobs/faders as a group so I never faced this issue. However I believe many users in the comment already had this problem. Here is a troubleshooting from fuadramsey, he previously posted and managed to use "banks of faders". I think the issue you are talking about is related to the "ignore children" thing (then when you move knobs, I believe that it does not consider the intial value (the "children) and just go up and down according to your will). Hope that helps : ***************************************************** Figured it out!!! Use v.08 version of Klinke's MCU plugin for Reaper It will toggle banks of tracks so you can control faders by sections: tracks 1-8, then press the track forward button on the controller to control faders on tracks 9-16 and so on. Also Folder track control (ignore children) - edit Klinke's Plugin MCU settings. You need to access Klinke's plugin menu in Reaper. The only way to get to this is with special hardware buttons on the controller that the Kontrol2 doesn't have. But you can emulate this function by using Klinke's imported actions from his plugin file download. These are custom actions for Reaper to use with his plugin. Import the actions into Reaper. Create a custom action that does both actions at once. Once imported in Reaper you will see these in the actions: 1) Mackie Control Klinke: Vpot Assign Pan/Surround (key) M2) ackie Control Klinke: Alt modifier (button) This will get you into the MCU editor, where you can assign anchor points or jumps that effect how the controller reacts to or ignores folders in Reaper. *****************************************************

  • @Manhsterz

    @Manhsterz

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@hideoushiss Yeah it happens sometimes. I don't exactly know what is your exact problem, so I'll detail all the issues I encountered : 1/ ALREADY ASSIGNED KNOB - Let's imagine you "learn midi" with know 1 for the volume of a certain VST. So if I open another VST and try to assign the knob 1 again, do stuffs, and try to play the track. Then the knob 1 will be assigned to 2 vst, so the two are going to mix together and that will be a mess. 2/ ZERO VOLUME FOR ASSIGNED KNOB - when working let's say with volume assigned knob (especially with VST Xpand!2), when trying to play the track from the beginning the assigned knob somehow goes to 0 so I don't hear the track. Actually I now try, at the end of my work with the knob and each time, to increase again the knob to the "basal" value, so it cas restart again at that final value. 3/ Others - sometimes and I don't know why, some knobs are already assigned to something... again, especially with Xpand!2 VST. So I just UNlearn them all and start over. Hope that will help !

  • @hideoushiss

    @hideoushiss

    @@Manhsterz I found a different solution - I went and assigned knobs CCs way higher (starting from 80) and it worked. I currently have set up everything as I needed. The click-learn thing didn't work for me but I just used a shortcut to pop up learn window and it is almost as fast. Kudos again to you. I got mine used so I was worrying that it was internally messed up in some way. The biggest thing here is to actually dive deep into Korg editor and change the way controller works.

    Thanks, Manhsterz, for the clear explanation! My problem is that, if I use method 2, then the indication for Nanoкontrol does not correspond in any way to the current status in the Reaper. It would be great if there was a way that would allow, for example, to arm a channel in Reaper and the Nanokontrol indicator would also reflect this.🤔

  • @Manhsterz

    @Manhsterz

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey ! When you say the "indication [...] does not correspond [...] to the current status in Reaper", do you only refer to the buttons on the NK2 not lightning up when let's say you arm a track ? But all the other features work right ? I recently checked the forum on Reaper's website but did not find anything about that... I guess the main issue is that there is no actual plugin for the Korg NanoKontrol 2 in Reaper. It seems not attracting much attention to the Reaper company to develop an update taking into account this hardware. One way I would think of is to set, let's say the "R" button as a track arming, and in Korg Editor, to set each "R" button as "Toggle". By doing so, it will flash up red when you press on it, and arm the track, and will go back unlit when pressing on it again, disarming the track. But If you arm a track by pushing the button (so it's flashing on red), and disarm the track on the software with your mouse, then the button on the nanoKontrol won't unlit. I guess this is what you experienced. If I have some news I'll come back to you. But I hope Reaper will see that there is a lot of nanoKontrol 2 users on Reaper. Sorry for not being of great help ! Cheers and happy new year

    Hi there, thanks for your visit ! Here is a troubleshooting for this exact issue from fuadramsey, he previously posted and managed to use "banks of faders" : ******************************************************* Figured it out!!! ******************************************************* I hope this will help you

    Hey, sorry for my late answer. In case you did not manage to successfully install it : - You have to unzip all the files in "Program Files/Reaper/Plugins" directly. In folder you should find xxxxx.dll files. Just unzip into that folder. - Some users have previously reported issues taht Reaper does not recognize that plugin. OPne thin gI advise you to do is to update your reaper software. Normally you should be set, Reaper should recognize after doing that (I am also using windows 10). I really hope that helps you !

    So you mean that you want to use the NK2 as a user interface with the Mackie plugin ? Hum, then you might want to check the button assignment for your "pitch bend wheel" in the "actions" > "show action list" and forget the midi control on that. Or maybe you can also click on your VST "pitch bend wheel" and select "forget midi CC". If the NK2 doesn't control weirdly the pitch bend wheel, when you disable the mackie plugin in the OSC/Web option of Reaper, then you can always disable that Mackie plugin and re assign all the knobs and fader to what you want (volume of each tracks etc) and save the Reaper keymaps file. You'll be able to load all the actions keys you have newly assigned later by importing the file on reaper. I hope this will help !

    Hi there, it seems the button behavior "momentary" has been selected on the Korg Kontrol Editor. You can try this : plug in your NK2, open Korg Kontrol Editor, assure yourself that the NK2 is detected by the software (if not, update the NK2 driver), on the "Communications" tab, click on "Receive Scene Data". It allows the software to fetch the current NK2 set up. Then, click on the first "M" button of the first slider (I assume you to use that button to mute the 1st track and so on), and on the bottom part, select as "Button Behavior", "Toggle". Instead of "momentary", "Toggle" change the state to "on" when you push it, and only returns to "off" when you push it again. Whereas "momentary", as it says, turn "on" on push, and "off" on the release. Then again, "Communication" tab, and "Write Scene Data" and confirm. It will send the set up and erase the previous one from your NK2. Restart reaper, adn it should work ! I hope at least :) I hope this is useful

    Yeah as far as I read of forums, we choose Mackie controller because it seems that this midi controller is kind of universal concerning its control assignments. So for Reaper, it thinks we use a Makie controller (not having KORG nanoKontrol2 in the settings) to simulate all the controls. But in reality we use another one, the Korg one. It is just a trick

    @@WildsevenMusic That's weird indeed, to tell the truth I never payed close attention to that. Since we are simulating the Mackie cotroller but are actually using the nanokontrol2, I believe there might be a glitch, shifting a bit the values. But I just realied that I only use the nanokontrol by configurating all the knbos myself (without the Mackie plugin), maybe that's why I don't notice that issue. If that glitch causes troubles in your workflow, maybe you can consider re assigning all the knobs yourself without using the Mackie plugin. Hey there, thanks for your feedback ! Do you use the Macki Control plugin, or do you assign the keys yourself ? By "open the PC" you mean for instance, reseting the PC ? Or it happens also when closing reaper and re opening it ? If it's only reaper, try these options : * Try upgrading Reaper to its latest version (sometimes it helps !) * If you assign yourself the keys, in Actions > Show actions list, you can save the key mapping with "Key map > Export". Then you just import them when needed. Remember you have, in that case, to remove "Macki" plugin from the OSC tab. If it's windows, then it means that each time you turn on th ePC, it seems to reset by default your NK2... Maybe you can try to unplug the NK2 before turning off the PC, and when turning it on ? Then only connect just before opening reaper. Sorry I cannot help that much on that :( Hope you will find the way. Don't hesitate to post here it you find out, so you help other people ! Thanks !

    It is really annoying that reaper does not DIRECTLY recognize the device, resulting in us taking alternative complex pathways... A/ As I posted on a comment, for some people the Mackie fike has to be unzipped into another specific folder which is indicated in a PDF within one of the Mackie files. Try that maybe. B/ It is surely already the case but make sure to update reaper to the latest version. C/ In the Korg software, make sure your PC recognize the NK2 first, before going to reaper. In fact, you have to tweak settings in Korg software, export it to the NK2 and close he software before going to reaper. If the Korg software is opened in the ame time as reaper, the NK2 will be used by the Korg software, resulting in reaper not recognizing it. Hope that helps...

    Dear colleague musician, in order to try resolving your problem, let’s go through the process step by step seeing if something could be missing : 1/ Korg driver install. So you downloaded on www.korg.com/us/support/download/driver/0/159/3541/ the Korg driver, and checked that it is the version « Windows 10 32-bit/64bit ». I believe it’s currently the « 1.15 r41e » version. 2/ Korg Midi Editor Install. Then you downloaded on www.korg.com/us/support/download/software/0/159/1354/ the MIDI editor software. What I see is the current version seems to be « 1.7.0, Date 2016-03-11 ». 3/ Mackie Klinke control. Then you downloaded on bitbucket.org/Klinkenstecker/csurf_klinke_mcu/downloads/reaper_csurf_mcu_klinke.zip the Mackie Klinke control. And you checked you unzipped that files into the « plugins » folder, inside your « Program Files\Reaper\Plugins\ ». You should have 4 files names something like « …mcu_klinke.dll » + « …mcu_klinke_b.dll » + « … mcu_klinke_b_x64.dll » and + « … mcu_klinke_x64.dll ». 4/ You connect your nanoKontrol2. The PC should make a sound and recognize the device. Then you turn on Korg MIDI editor. Does it ? The first window should show you your device. Does it ? It even shows you in little, the input and ouput. For me it’s « IN : nanoKONTROL2 1 SLIDER/KNOB. OUT : nanoKONTROL2 1 CTRL ». This is the same entries in Reapeer. Then click OK. 5/ Middle Right, you choosed « CC/NoteNumber ». You can make adjustement, like for each button set « Toggle ». When OK with that, on top menu, go to « Communication > Write Scene Date ». So it writes inside you device all the parameter you set. Did you “Write Scene Data” ? 6/ Close Korg Midi Editor. Close Reaper and restart Reapser. 7/ Then just follow the video and it should Work. Tell me if not. Hope that helps !

    @@Manhsterz Thank you for your reply. So yes I did step 1 and 2 just like you stated. On step 3 I extracted everything into the Reaper plugin folder including manual and MCU folder. I since went back and just left the dll files all 4 of them. I see the device in Reaper on Midi setting as well as Control Surface menu. And I set up everything shown in video. The presets of Mackie Klinke does not work still. But since the only step I changed (taking out MCU folder from Reaper plugin) I went in Korg Midi editor and in preferences choose Korg Kontrol 2 as input and output midi an I was able to finally have Reaper see the device in the actions shortcut menu, I was able to start manually mapping the Korg keys with CCs. Here is the problem I notices before and I notice now as well. Sometimes when I launch Korg Midi editor the software sees my device and highlights it, and there are other times it does not see the device. It just shows many devices and does not recognize Korg Kontrol 2. I tried unplugging it from usb and plugging it back in (it makes the sound) but no luck. Because I figured what ever if the Klinke mapping doesn't work I can map it manually which will give me more flexibility. But I cannot go back now to Korg Midi Editor to change some some of the buttons the way they act (mute button or play button). So at the end of the day I can finally use the device to map manually CC commands through the actions tab in Reaper, but the Korg Midi Editior does not see the device no more.. How do I overcome this or what can be causing this? Also another questions if I do map put everything with CCs is there a way to program the buttons to light up for example when you mute or unmute, solo or unsolo? Thank you.

Or every faders/knobs only control the pan of each track ? Let's check some points : 🔳 Make sure you download the last driver for the nanoKontrol2. Make sure your OS recognize your nanokontrol when opening the Korg Editor 🔳 For the continous values, you should go to your Korg Editor, and set to "CC" for continous value, for every knobs and faders first. 🔳 Then you have to send the settings to your hardware "Communication > Write Scene Data" 🔳 Let's assume you've downloaded the MACKIE .dll files and extract that to your Reaper>Plugins files. 🔳 On reaper make sure you "Enable" your nanokontrol, either on INPUt and OUTPUT in your midi devices. Then follow "Contrl/OSC" interface as it's shown in the video. Then restart Reaper. 🔳 I have noticed after that, that your hardwire should be connected before Reaper starting, in order to work properly. I still have no idea how you are using it with reaper in CC mode. Mine simply won't behaviour as yours does (lots of weird behaviour and unusable) and I have no idea where to go for help.

    Hi Sam. Let's check it out. So in your "Programs\Reaper\Plugins\" we make sure we have 4 files among all the other .dll files : " reaper_csurf_mcu_klinke.dll" " reaper_csurf_mcu_klinke_b.dll" "reaper_csurf_mcu_klinke_b_x64.dll" "reaper_csurf_mcu_klinke_x64.dll" And the "MCU" folder with all the files inside. Then when that's checked, close Reaper and restart it. Then go to Options\Preferences\Control/OSC/web, click Add and you should have the Mackie Control (Klinke). Let me know

  • @fuadramsey

    @fuadramsey

    Figured it out!!!

    Hi dear Ryan, 1/ There was another Reaper user that commented about the same problem, few months ago. What he found that workred was to update reaper to the latest version. Maybe you can try to update Reaper. 2/ The "Mackie" files downloaded should actually be put in the "REAPER > Plugins" folder. The REAPER files (or REAPER (x64) for some) is supposed to be located in your WINDOWS hard drive > Program Files > REAPER. Hope that helps

Isn't there any "beta" version of the NK2 driver on their website for w11 ?

  • @Manhsterz

    @Manhsterz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey. If you mention Xpand, I guess that means that you are using the NK without Mackie plugin (if you want to control the Xpand VST). Let's assume you want to do that. First thing is to delete the Mackie plugin from OSC. Then make sure you downloaded the latest version of NK driver. On the Korg editor make sure everything is on CC mode and, send the config to the hardware (very important step). On Xpand then what I noticed is that whenever I wanted to "learn midi" I first had to "forget midi" on whatever button I want to assign. I don't know why. But maybe you can do that also. "Forget Midi" first then reassign midi to the slider/knob you want. Anyway, does your NK control anything else outside of Xpand, in you Reaper daw?
