Another thing to look for: Rear main seal leaking (where the engine meets the trans) is will leak there. Also the oil pan gasket itself. you can see the sweat around it in the video on the 24v.

Yeah, only other issue that I can recall that you didn’t mention is the APPS sensor. A lot of folks, when that sensor goes bad, their truck will not keep running or it will surge and rev randomly without any pedal input. Replace it with a Timbo APPS

One other thing is the vacuum lines for the 4x4 actuator, they tend to crack and loose vacuum causing 4x4 not to work

The KDP is a 12 valve issue I believe, not a 24 valve issue. Edit: I was incorrect, sort of. The KDP is a common issue in the 12 valves and a less likely but still possible problem in the 24 valve Cummins.

Correct! I must have messed that up. I've personally seen more 98.5-00 with kdp issues

I had 2 problems with an high mileage 24v 2gen, (vp44) bad check valve draining the fuel lines and air pockets came out while driving on the road. The other was a leaking front main with a worn out speedy sleeve which replacement needs measured to fit seal not oem.

24v with the vp44s the ecm likes to go out on them as well. Not as far as running the engine. But controlling the transfer pump. Turn key on you should hear the transfer pump turn on for around 10 to 15 seconds. If it dont or runs for about 2 seconds it’s not working right. Also you can check it by bumping the starter from key switch and listen for the transfer pump. 20 or 30 seconds I believe is what it’s supposed to run for. Have had lost fail that test including mine. Good video tho overall!

I just bought a 01 24 valve 6spd manual 254k on engine runs super strong, but when you get it up to running temperature ever so often, it stalls out. I'm gonna do a filter change on all filters and do a fresh oil change and start there. What are your thoughts if not stopped up filter?

  • @dieselsforlife3847

Well first thing is are you getting any engine codes? If no, do you get any dead pedal from the throttle.? Could be the transfer pump. Or lift pump is what they technically call them. Or the vp44 could be going out on you. Those have to have a good steady flow of fuel for the vp44 computer to keep it cool. Plugged fuel filter can and will mess them up. As well as a transfer pump starting to fail. Cam and crank sensor could also be given you fits. A fuel pressure gage is handy for seeing what’s going on. Hopefully this helps you out! Good luck with it! Amazing trucks!

Im looking at getting a daily driver second gen down in SC so rust isn't much of an issue just price and drivetrain..if it's got new front end parts and injectors/trans work is 225k to 300k ok for a daily?
