that was me last week...2015 ram 3500 with 130K trouble free miles...not even a belt ... just normal service.....flagged DEF fault started counting down from 150 miles to limp mode and i was 140 miles from home.....2 days and $2800 later that entire systems in the scrap pile....wish id done it when the warranty ran out
This guy is funny. Makes learning shit actually entertaining. Good job man!
Thank you Weston I really appreciate the kindness n thought you put into this video. I break gaskets with your humor in these videos too. Keep it up man!
Thanks for the videos and tips! I owned a 12v Cummins and sold it a few years back... kicking my self now that I’m seeing the prices on some of them nowadays! Almost every single thing you went through , every issue... I had with my first Cummins truck! Now thanks to experience and some knowledge I’ll be more vigilant in finding a great running diesel!
One of the best explanations I have ever watched on what to look for when checking a diesel powered vehicle.
I don’t even own a diesel but I love learning and watching your videos sir. I’m a Hemi man myself but love the power and sound diesel create. Very informative video bro! Subscribed
Really appreciate this video. You don't assume people know anything in particular about these Cummins engines but it isn't condescending. This is what a teaching KZread video should look like.
Bought My very first 6.7 yesterday and your videos got me excited about a diesel truck awhile back and gave me buying confidence.
There should be some pressure in the radiator after running the engine a bit. but like you said, there shouldn't be bubbles or instant high pressure after starting. Take along a pressure tester. connect it to a cold radiator (don't pressurize it) and run the engine and see how fast pressure builds on the gauge.
You are honestly one of the most knowledgable people on the internet about diesel trucks. These tips were great. Thanks so much.

Wow thanks man! This is the most in depth diesel buying guide video I have found. I’m looking for my first diesel now and want to make sure I get a good one. Thanks again.
Great info. I almost bought a 130K Cummins for my current truck, but a few things just didn't feel quite right, and I don't know that much about diesels. Thanks for the breakdown. Keep up the awesome content!
I forwarded this video to my buddy who's looking to buy a Cummings. He asked me about blow by, this summed it up well. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It’s nice to see a video that’s hands on and straight to the point. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻
I've worked with diesel trucks for about 6 years and i currently work at a semi truck dealership and all we work with are diesel motors. This video is a GREAT reference for anyone out there looking at a used diesel truck. Diesels are awesome! But there's a lot that can go bad on the engines, especially with the newer aftertreatment systems on them. They can be a blessing and a curse. Stay informed and know what you're spending your money on! Awesome tips Westen Champlin!

Great list. Being a complete diesel noob, I never knew about 2/3 of this info. Thanks very much.
This is the reason why I subscribed to this channel. Best review ever with all the information I wanted on my newish truck.
Easily the most helpful buying a truck video I have ever seen
Gotta say Ive never been a dodge fan . But i do know that Cummins are Good Motors. Had a 1995 7.3 powerstroker hard starting SOB in the winter good ol truck though. Awesome videos cant wait for the Fummins build !!!!!!!!
I love your channel, Westen. I got worried about your bout from pneumonia. I had that as a kid and an adult. Originally from Texas and ended up here in California as a kid. Dad transferred as a jet mechanic is why. Been thinking of relocating to Wichita or back to Texas to get away from the nasty people in California. I figured with good, decent, honest folks like you, life may be enjoyable again. Cheers and thanks for knowledge and good times. I actually had a good time watching your vids. I spent time working on farms working the lands and drove heavy equipment. Please watch your health and well.
Another good video, I have been doing this for over 40 years, for your age you have some great knowledge. Thanks. I even have my 86 year old father in law watching you.
Sure enjoyed listening to your channel. I have a 98 DODGE RAM 3500 DUALLY. I bought it new and it has 105000 miles on it. I am having a mechanic replace a main seal and clutch 5 speed and install a straight pipe 5 inch exhaust system... The truck is amazing and has never presented me with serious mechanical issues...Love your show and keep on giving us your most valuable information.. Thanks

This is the best diesel inspection vid I've in over 6 months of watching them!!!! One thing you said about the truck already being "warmed up" hiding an issue, I've talked to a few "salesman" that a ask "which truck do you want to see, I'll have it ready..." red flag!! Great video!!!!!
Love your explanation on a blow by and where the power comes from, really, really funny (100% right)
Man this information is pure gold! Thank you very much!

Awesome video man I useto own a cummins 2 years I had it for fully modified for daily driver use etc I trade it in for a hemi 392. For anyone looking to get one it’s a great truck will start in any weather if u show love to it in return it will love ya. Two things I use the turbo whistle and going two weeks or more on a tank.
Western Chaplin finally has a Instagram and Facebook page! Now all we’re missing is a Twitter and a Premium Snapchat! 😂 Love the videos brother!
Can you make a video talking the basics of diesels for people with no knowledge on them. love ur vids
I enjoy watching all of your videos that I’ve watched. Keep up the cool content. I was actually thinking about buying a diesel here soon for work, so this video was actually very helpful for me being a new diesel buyer. 💪🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the solid advice. You're not the only GOT fan here
Thanks for filming ~ keepem coming
I always get hyped when you post a video bro!!
It is impressive how much you know about this stuff. 🙌
This transcends diesels and applies to ANY vehicle, but basically gauge the overall shape of the rig. See if the interior has many stains, busted trim pieces, or tears in fabric. See if the exterior has many dents, dings, or chips in paint (obviously some dings and chips are inevitable, but A LOT of em means it probably gets romped on)
This was really useful and informative. There should be a class action lawsuit against the EPA, and oil companies for damage to consumer goods due to emmissions controls. I'm saying fuel companies because they could make much cleaner burning fuel that would not require more than a catalytic converter.
@ianvisser7899
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, no. Oil and fuel companies arent liable. At the end of the day, they produce A product, that you CHOOSE to use. Nobody is forcing you to use Shell premium unleaded, or Diesel... Nor are they ramming oil down your throat. You choose what you run your car on and as such, you are liable for what you put into your car. For instance, if you top up with dirty fuel and it grenades your motor, it's not their fault. Sure, you might feel it's their fault, but nowhere does it state that they are selling you clean fuel. The only time you have even the slightest chance of suing a gas company, is when the product sold to you was not the product you received. What I mean by that, is if you bought and paid for Diesel, they used the diesel hose (important, because you are responsible for them using the right hose) and it dispensed petrol. But even then, you can use the gas station, not the gas company. The only people liable in your hypothetical lawsuit, would be the government. The automotive manufacturers are in the clear too, because government regulation dictates that they must have those emission devices in place and although they have a warranty on their engines for 100k miles, nowhere do they guarantee that every engine will last that long as there are countless factors at play to achieve that. So end of the day, your lawsuit would have no grounds and it would be dismissed in a court of law before you even set foot in the door.
Love the videos. Please keep making videos. the more content the better.
You make great videos man. Great info and great sense of humor! I hope to buy a Ram Cummins probably used for my next truck so I need to get educated.
Buddy you are spot on. I go threw a diesel truck every yr are so. From a 6.7 cummins to 6.6 duramax. And every time I buy i use these techniques. And they haven't failed me. I love your content. Keep up the good work.

You're gonna get pressure and a small hiss from the coolant system when you remove the cap on a rad or degas bottle after it's been running. You could also burn yourself if it's hot enough and coolant sprays on you when you pop the cap

New to Cummins engines and a college educated city slicker. Just want to say that if you think these country boys don’t have their shit together, then you need to go back to school. Thanks for the video, Westin ... great information.
I own a Duramax and had to watch a Cummins video to learn anything and actually enjoy watching it! You need to roll with me when I buy my next diesel
You gave some good advice it’s very good for a novice. The worst thing for for these modern diesels is using them as grocery getters short hops stop and go not getting them up to running temperature shutting them down etc. that’s what screws up emissions systems and put a hurt on the engine. Diesels are meant to work and drive deleting them is the only way to go, except now the EPA is on to this and the companies making delete kits are being messed with.
Make sure a diesel truck has matching batteries. If they've been replaced one at a time, use that as a negotiating piece. Bad batteries take out everything around them. Alternator/starter/batteries on a diesel get expensive
@ridingwiththereids
5 жыл бұрын
@@stuartgergen830 that doesn't make any sense. So you owned the truck, and then "someone" leased it, and THEN "someone" put "car batteries in it"??? Lol, what in the f@wk does that even mean?

Hey Westen, really appreciate you making this video. I'm getting ready to buy my first diesel truck next year and I'm trying to learn as much as possible before I do so. Is there any chance you could do another one of these videos where you cover what to check as far as transmission, transfer case, differentials, etc... Basically all the drive-line stuff. Also maybe easy signs to tell how hard the truck has been worked. Anyways, Thanks again bud.
