At some point Mercedes revised the timing chain tensioner, so in later models the tensioner issue isn‘t that common anymore. And proper servicing helps, but the timing chain, since it’s only a single not duplex chain, will get longer, no matter what. So the timing chain can still become an issue at higher km‘s like 400k and above, depending on the amount of coldstarts it had to endure. Also the Oil cooler can become an issue due to the cooling canals being blocked by too thick oil. So do your services early (every 10k km) and you will have a long lasting engine!

So there should be any problems as long as you service twice the recommended intervals.

Yeah I fully agree, we had probably around 8 of these in our taxi cab fleet and even though the company tortures the shit out of them by stretching the interval to literally double the miles we have had no problems besides the timing chain tensioner or the occasional sensor going bad. Great sturdy engines! Although I drive an OM 642 in an e class.

154K mile OM651 here. 10-14K oil change intervals and no sound whatsoever on cold start or running. Most importantly, proper MB 229.51/52 always used

i have a 2011 sprinter 316 with this OM651 engine and bought it with 175k miles on it, and it needed a new chain, sprockets and tentioner. It did cost me 1200 euro's to get it fixed.

Much prefer the OM612 engine in the older Sprinter. I have a motorhome with that engine for the past 21 years, Nice sound for a diesel.

@@GM-outdoor Lots of info on KZread with this engine and what to look for. I had mine from New, so it's been looked after by myself from day one. Just regular servicing filter changes etc, plus gearbox (manual) and rear diff oil changes every second engine oil change . I have not had problems so far after 21 years.

Ok in a lot of cases this tensioner fail and chain rattle might be poor maintenance high miles issue. But i think in a lot of cases. Theres a route cause that starts the ball rolling. Esp if cold start short rattle is problem. Ive found my oil filter housing drains totally to sump overnite. Yes i change all oil filter stem seals. But if i remove filter before a cold start. Yes i know oil drains to sump. But my filter is bone dry. As if oil housing drained totally hours before ! Not a drip. In my case i removed stem from filter housing. Fitted it in housing. Filled housing. Oil drained completely overnite down oil filter supply side. So every cold start means delay filling oil housing. If you look at pics of oil cooler manifold. Theres a cap on side. Pull it out theres a long spring loaded. Rod. With bullet end on it. Some say its oil cooler thermostat. But its also an anti run back valve.

Ive further proved my theory. As im only at 60000 miles chain rattle every morning cold. I removed filter cap stem. Placed in housing with filter. Filled cup with oil. Put cap on filter. Cold start. No one bit of rattle. Sounds like liquid chocolate. Ok in some cases. You might need chain or at least tensioner. As i think dry starts empty oil housing start the failure with tensioners. And snatching and grabbing slack chain stretch chain.

@@sm79392 In the UK a genuine MB tensioner is £130, a non genuine one is £45. I think its quite quick to fit. There are videos on how to do it and it takes about 30minutes.

Try this mate. Remove your oil filter cap. Check the 3 rubber o rings on filter cap and stem are intact And not hard and flat. If they are change them. You get them with most oil filters. I find what can happen if seals bad. The oil in filter housing drains back into sump overnite. Causing a delay on oil feed to tensioner. Due to pump having to fill filter housing first on esp cold start. Might help but in some cases oil tensioner might need changed also as repeated 3 sec rattles. I think can damage oil tensioner. Making it leak oil out tip. Or even damage internal spring. Well worth a try. It will rattle on first start after filter and o ring change. But after that might not.

There might be no issues on these magnificent engines, if they have under 300000 km and are maintained properly, but with higher mileage, even with regular maintenance, a stretch chain can and probably will be an issue. From what I’ve heard and experienced, the chain is more an issue than the tensioners, with engines that has a service history as described. This goes for revised versions of the tensioners, but as mentioned, the chain is to be looked after no matter what.

FYI, The timing chain on the om651 stretch over time , left unchecked it will break the guide rails and eventually snap, Not a tensioner issue.

Timing. Chains. DO. NOT. STRETCH... Ffs i've been hearing this shit everywhere.. But timing CHAINS do not stretch.. They call it stretching, but what it is actually, is that each link wears enough to make it look as if it has stretched, while in reality, it really hasn't stretched at all.. It's just worn..

@@lillekeest1601 Ah yes, you’re right. Forgot that. 👍 I’m currently working on a C200 of 2011. There’s a hard rattle and atomizer cylinder 1 is defective. Engine sounds terrible. I took the valve cover off and chain and sprockets are in good condition, took the chain tensioner out and gonna replace it. The tensioner has 4 oil inlet holes though, so it’s an upgraded version or did they mount this type of tensioner since a certain production year? Also is there a way to see or feel if a tensioner is defective? Together with a new atomizer, I hope this fixes the issue. You think the engine imbalance can cause the chain to rattle more severe? I would think yes, since power delivery fluctuates too much on the crankshaft, it also affects the chain. I believe I should change the oil pressure solonoid also later, since Mercedes updated the part to a constant high oil pressure. Higher oil pressure should also help the tensioner and the engine bearings and lubrication in general. In normal operation the valve feeds the engine an oil pressure of 2 bar under 1800rpm I believe, probably a system for fuel economy, but in my opinion is intentional lower oil pressure never a good idea. Oh well, next week I’m installing new atomizer and tensioner and I’ll see from there. 💪

It's a single row chain on the om651 and as the dual cam sprockets wear the small pieces drop down into the lower timing gears and can ruin the gear on the end of the crankshaft. Not a very good engine at all!
