I just don't believe in soft bait. _Or_ that style of cup and trigger-pad. The old-school traps are fine with that traditional hook thing right on the little trigger. You jam a half-peanut on the hook, or a firm piece of meat. They have to work it off the hook the hard way.

I agree especially with rats. I always am surprised if a trap gets even 1 rat. The rats have been incredibly crafty. I also would love to see some of those trap mods mentioned in the other comments

Totally agreeing. There was a rat leaning on the trigger as well as a rat STANDING on the trigger at the same time where the trap totally failed to go off. The trap is more rodent roulette.

I don't know what's going on with his trap, I have this trap and it's nailed half a dozen rats that encountered it. From what I can see in my videos it's never been able to rest on the trigger without it going off nor any rat smart enough to just steal the bait like that. My only guess is I cram hard peanut butter inside the bait cup and make it flush with the edges, perhaps his bait stealer got it's teeth on the overflow and pulled most of the bait out. As for standing on the trigger, that was very surprising. It did look like a lighter smaller rat/mouse? IIRC my trap nailed a mouse before.

I've used the same trap with varying degrees of success, I found the most effective was to play with the trigger to set it to "hair trigger" like the video shows but i turned mine towards the wall instead of away from it. They have a natural tendency to track along walls. So if the bait doesn't entice them well enough, just walking across the trigger worked just fine.

I use popsicle sticks to slightly lift the trap (i use Tomcat mouse trap) so when the mouse gets in, the unstable stick drops and the trap triggers just by hitting the ground with the mouse inside, regardless if enough pressure is applied or not. Just make sure to put peanut butter far inside the trap so the mouse must reach in deep.

Hey Shawn, in years of my trapping experience, I have figured out a way so rodents don't steal your bait. I simply it a piece of scotch tape over the bait cup. This way, if the rat/mouse is even the most careful it can be, it still gets caught because of the scotch tape that the rodent is pushing down or working at chewing to get to the bait. The rodent will push down or find out that there is tape on the cup. This will make them work extra hard and eventually get caught.

I've never used the tomcat brand but I have used the T-Rex version and they're very sensitive. I pulled over 40 rats out of one attic in an old home on a naval base in South Carolina. The infestation was so bad that the living rats would feed on the dead ones in the trap. Mind you I'm checking these traps once a day so in a 24 hour period they'd go from living to being the next meal of their brother or cousin. I fed the local foxes in the area just like you do here. On average I pulled 4 rats a day for 10 days, never had an empty trap. Some days I even had a couple rats in one trap. On the T-Rex that trigger pad would go off at a breeze and didn't require any messing around with. Thanks for your video!

I've caught around 10 rats with this trap, but we have huge rats here. The ones in the video look like mice in comparison.
I *HIGHLY* recommend using Tootsie Rolls or some sort of taffy in place of peanut butter as bait. PB can be easily nabbed by mice and rats, but a softly-chewed piece of Tootsie roll or Starburst stuck in a bait cup is sticky enough so that the rodent will sit there gnawing at it until it sets off the trap and gets caught. Not recommended if you live in a hot climate, though, as candy like that is prone to melting. But I find it highly effective. A little trick I picked up from TrueBloodOutdoors here on KZread about 6 years ago.

I have had no problems catching rats, big or small ones have been caught in my four tom cat rat traps. Last year I caught 13 in fall and winter. This year so far I have caught seven, at a faster rate this year. I like then over the cheap old fashioned traps because when I set the old school traps I almost always managed to catch a finger or thumb. Plus, if I had caught rats with the older type ones, it us not as easy to remove the dead rats from them. I gave the old style traps to my neighbor, so at least he can use them to catch the neighborhood rats. ;)

Thank, Shawn. I didn’t know you could make the trap more sensitive.
I've had decent luck with the mouse style trap. My bait gets stolen every so often, so I've been putting the peanut butter further back so they actually have to step on the trigger to reach it. Also, a few times the traps have been stolen as well.
Aw, for a little while I thought you were going to get a "Two for One" with the weight of 2 rats on the trap at the same time. Darn it! The trigger is still not sensitive enough, it took a long time to get something. Maybe you have to shave a little bit of plastic off of one of the trigger components. Those traps should go off much easier than that. I have some smaller mouse traps from the same company and it worked perfectly the second the mouse messed with it. I also taped the trap down to a piece of cardboard so it wouldn't flip when the spring goes off thus getting a really fast solid hit with the bail. Then I taped that to the surface where the mouse was showing up which was under the range top of my stove. It was the one and only mouse I ever had in this apartment and I've been here 13 years.
This trap really works! Got rid of the rat problem in my garage!

Have you considered wearing gloves when testing the traps to prevent your scent from getting on it? I noticed the rats always sniff around the trap and seem to recoil away after that. Maybe they are picking up your scent and in rat university, they are taught to be deathly afraid and avoid at all costs. The young rats havent made it to rat university just yet which is why they fall for these traps more often then not.

I have handled these with my hands repeatedly and they completely worked. I caught over 8 rats with these - but need to only use at night and make them un-accessible to all larger animals. These are dangerous.
I've used the more trap and noticed the trigger wasn't very sensitive. I think the one I have was defective. I had to melt a piece of (edit) plastic to make the latch barely grasp the trigger. After that though it worked perfectly.

How did melting the plastic work? I’m thinking of buying this and was surprised to see 2 rats on it without setting it off!
Thanks. Great tip about the lever adjustment. Have you considered putting the bait on the very back of the lever?
My man really half-cocked the trap like a revolver 😂
That dam is really coming along. Great vid.. thanks! 👍
This is my most successful/favorite trap. Caught 8 rats with the same trap in one day. (Same lump of peanut butter in the bait cup too) Same day, same location.
We get mice in our garage every year. THESE things work like a charm. Just stick a little peanut butter in the hole and WHACK , one less mouse. We throw them in the field for the coyote.

put a tiny drop of oil on the faces of the latching components to make it more sensitive?

This is what I was thinking. I wonder if this particular trap was stored in a very humid place? I've used the smaller version of these traps to catch a few mice that found their way inside and those are extremely sensitive.
That's why u put bait on and around the trigger plate

Yep, I drilled some 1/8" holes in trigger plate and smeared peanut butter in them, hard to get out so they push on it with their face and BAM! end of story.
I have used these traps with success. A couple tips: Dab a little white grease on the trigger mechanism to free it up a bit. I drilled two holes on either side of the bait cup and ran a wire over and out the bottom as a "grille" to decrease the likelihood of stolen bait. Be sure to attach the trap to something as I have found the trap 50 feet from it's original spot after it was dragged away with a hind leg in it.
I noticed that my bait was gone in the trap. I sprayed the inners with PAM cooking nonstick spray. Then the trap started cooking so to speak! Try that, it snaps fast!

I've caught 40+ urban rats with 4 of these. Extremely reusable and easy to set. The trigger is perfectly balanced that it will get rats, but not birds. Also work if put in travel pathways without bait.

40? I caught one. Will try again.
I caught three in the same trap in one shot. Three juveniles in the jaws, as symetrical as if they had been posing for an artistic photo shoot. I wished I'd taken a photo of this 3 in one kill.
Someone at work mental using these traps for chipmunks. Holy cow, it works. Hot glue some sunflower seeds in the bait cup. Use it over and over. Got 4 this weekend while working around the house checking randomly.
Hey the best bait is a melted Tootsie roll
Hey Shawn, Yet another great video ! I agree with you on the sensitivity for sure ! If you notice, the rats are smart enough to go to the back of the trigger pad where there is less leverage to set off the trap ! ( darn things are smart ) If you can create a way to force them more to the front of the trigger pad, I am sure it will work perfectly ! Even if you just use a piece of monofilament line to discourage them from using the back approach to the pad. Or try using a piece of twine with peanut butter on it tied across the trigger. Anything to make them work at the bait more aggressively !
Those rats were throwing parties on that trap.
This is my favorite Mouse Trap Monday episode.
I've caught many rats with one of those and I've never had the bait eaten without catching a rat. I'm wondering if maybe the one you tested had an unusually stiff trigger somehow. You can't beat them for quick and easy!

I had good luck early on with the Tomcat traps, but lately, rats have been stealing bait and not triggering the traps.. So - mixed bag for me. These aren't the only weapons in my arsenal. When they work, they work great; but when they don't, I get mad
@ZviJ1

@@masskonfuzion My experience and impressions reveal 3 reasons for this. 1- Rats detect human odor when someone didn't handle the trap with gloves. They somehow link such an odor with certain death, so they understandably avoid it. 2- Rats in the area heard or saw another rat getting caught in the trap. 3- Some rats that see such a trap aren't hungry at all and consider the fact the bait is positioned the way it is as too suspicious, so they rather get their food elsewhere.
Dude I love your videos
I just bought one today. It seems a little different. The pressure plate is white and seems to have less play. The bait pod isn't removable anymore. To compensate, there is a hole over the bait pod I hope it gets that confounded rat in my garage...

Steve Blankenship 1 year ago I’m retired from doing commercial pest control. The rats you are talking about are roof rats. I got rid of countless ones in my career. Snap traps were my weapon of choice. One type which I used had a small cup with in the trap. I used to carry smoked almonds and I would pound a couple of almonds in that cup with a small hammer or the back end of a heavy flashlight. The rat would have to work to get that out and pounded nuts would be effective
@Willowflat16

Good tip! Things like sesame seeds would probably work, and they'd be a lot cheaper than almonds!
I’ve caught 7 rats in my snap trap. It works better than the old metal wire trap and I love the teeth on it. It does not let go. It works.
