This trap worked for me. It took a really long time and a game camera. I think it was about 4 weeks total. I had trapped several rats using the good old victory style traps but there was one rat that was a genius and would set them off then take the bait. After about three weeks of the Uhlik trap in place with the safety in, it finally began going for the bait. I then armed the trap but it wouldn’t get caught and there was evidence it was still feeding. I had to set up a camera to figure her out. She would come in through the hole in the top and hang by her feet upside down. I then simply covered the handle hole up with a brick. She was then forced to enter through the front on top of the trapdoor. The transfer cage which is included with this trap worked very well too, exactly as the manufacture described. I was doubtful when I read the instructions but it was flawless. This video doesn’t show the transfer cage which the manufacturer claims is critical to not kill the caught rats inside the trap or else the scent of blood will throw off newcomers to it. If you have a persistent untrappable rat I recommend this device just simply cover the handle hole on top. It’s expensive but this last lone female had already caused over $200 in damage and would have likely given birth to some equally intelligent offspring.

My grandfather helped design/build this trap. I don't think I've ever seen him as excited as when he told me he saw his trap on your channel. Matt makes good deer jerky too. Update. My grandfather is, as of last August, no longer with us. Matt is an older gentleman and has trouble with technology, that is why it's a bit difficult to acquire the traps.

Honestly, I’m happy that you mention the mink man. His channel is really great and it does a good job of getting rid of rats.It’s also just nice to see fellow KZreadrs helping each other out

Seeing a bunch of your videos made me think you were out to exterminate all mice and rats from earth but now it's obvious you love these critters (when they aren't a danger to your home). Respect.

One of the things I love about this channel is how Shawn gives exposure to small business/individuals who have built a better mousetrap. I hope Mr. Uhlik gets all the business he can handle from this video. My guess is that he is or was an HVAC guy. Those guys know their sheet metal and whoever designed and built that trap has skills.

I only watch your trap videos. You handle the subject correctly in my humble opinion. You always pay attention to humane practices, your careful to respect the ecosystem and you never try to sensationalise killing or death. Man I just started watch your channel. You're pretty cool man. I love how humane your traps are. I was just watching someone torturing rats with traps but it seems to me they were on some sort of set and not wild rats falling for the traps. Thanks

You've used the right tactic by leaving the cage baited for a few days to let the rats become confident with it. A lot of people don't do that and wonder why their traps don't do well. As regards disposing of the rats would it be any better to immerse the whole trap in a bath of water and drown them. It would be relatively quick.

I love how at 7:02 the rat inside the trap tries to scare away the other one and the response of the one being scared off is just dropping the other one into the trap and escaping.

Those videos from asia are messed up and I live in Hong Kong. They are really tricky because they use words like " rescue " and "save" when they are actually torturing and killing. You and the mink man are way better and deserve more support from youtube !

The videos are so messed up, I saw one that had so many rats on the glue trap that the rats started chewing on each other, ripping off legs and tails. I got sick to my stomach and never went back to those channels. Imo the channels should be banned not only demonitized since they are actively promoting animal cruelty.

I'll hold onto your channel for when I decide to move to the outskirts. Your videos are very useful.

Used to pick up a trash compactor container back in the '80s around 4 am. Hundreds of rats would come pouring out the back as I pulled it away. It was kind of nerve wracking since the movie 'Willard' wasn't that old yet. They lived in the retaining wall next to it built with railroad ties.

He has more pet rats than the wild ones are out there🤣

Sadly wild rats aren't safe to feed pet snakes. But my son and I love your videos and used the rolling log trap for our own mouse problem. Keep these videos coming!

The bait I use is actually song bird seeds, it smells really good like berries, my pet mice and rats love it and so when the house mice smell the seeds I put in my victor catch and hold trap, I get them every time.

Ask the local bird sanctuary if they want rats for their eagles and hawks

I think they may not want to feed wild caught rats or mice, even if they are 100% poison free. The concern is parasites or pathogens. Safer to feed captive bread mice and rats.

I have a rat problem in my apartment. Your videos helped me realize these are rats as opposed to mice. Is there any way you could make a video explaining the difference between the two, and why rats are so elusive? (They peed on my "mouse magic" peppermint deterrent pouch) They've basically been giving me the middle finger.

@@viciousKev true with shipping, but they are difficult to get a response from and I think you have to mail in a check? He should work something out with Havahart and get them marketed. BUT Shawn has given them more exposure than any other venue I could think of!

you could easily incorporate a smaller trapdoor in the very far end of the main trapdoor to catch mice and small rats as well, by the time a rat reached the far end they would have tripped the main trapdoor, so it would work a treat.

I never expected Shawn to have so many pet rats!

He might have millions of pet rats if he's not careful. He needs to keep them away from the Casanova rats that visit his barn .

This may be one of the more awesome traps I seen on your channel. The one with the raccoons in it I’d like to see in action. I use a cheaper trap but the doors have to be readjusted from time to time. Enjoyed watching like usual.
