OMG it is so wonderfully amazing to hear australian doctors talking about these issues - the ineffective thyroid tests, thyroxin problems etc. I have been taking natural dessicated thyroid for ten years, it's a great medication, but I have been treated like dirt and abused by doctors, particularly endos, it's a constant battle. I have a wonderful GP here in Canberra who prescribes it for me, but I have to see endos for my diabetes, but all they ever want to talk about is how terrible NDT is, and not interested in trying to help with my high blood sugars. One prominent Canberra endo refused to treat me for my diabetes while I was taking NDT!! It's so frustrating, many a time I have left the endo's office in tears. So you can imagine how happy I am to hear a couple of doctors saying the very things I have been saying for the last ten years 💜

I had an appointment with Dr Mason ....he's great....we didn't discuss the thyroid issue in detail at the time but I went on an extremely low carb diet and my T3 dropped like a stone....so much so that I ended up in hospital on three occasions with terrifying heart irregularities.....I did not understand what was going on at the time, but worked it out ...I had to raise my carb intake....not sugar....but, by introducing more vegetables back into my diet I was able to raise my T3 a tiny bit.....to just above the absolute lowest end of the range....Just a reminder that in such a sensitive situation, one shoe does NOT fit all

Sorry, this post is confusing. Did Paul tell you to go low carb and then your heart issues occurred, or he advised you after the fact?

Sorry....I can see how that was a bit confusing. I had been listening to many different people talking about low carb..carnivore etc. Paul did not specifically tell me to go carnivore.....I chose to do that on my own...I was speaking with him about a different issue. The reason I left this post was because I hear so many talking about the carnivore diet but I don't hear anyone talking about the thyroid issue as a possible result...I felt great at first ( I've been low carb a long time) but all of a sudden this heart thing kicked in and there was nobody to get any advice from....very scary.( GP's in UK are 100% ignorant on thyroid) Then I heard somewhere that if you tend toward low thyroid....which might point someone toward low carb or carnivore in the first place, to help with weight issues....that carnivore is really not a good idea. As soon as I heard this I got my T3 tested and it was way below reference range. I introduced veg back into my diet and very gradually the T3 went back to it's previous levels and the heart issues stopped almost immediately. I have posted comments and questions about this elsewhere and had absolutely no responses

I agree that the information on the various phyiological and biochemical mechanisms regarding low carb diets is not very succinct. Multiple thyroid function tests over time are required time to establish a reference, was this done? Did you check intracellular potassium? My first thought was low potassium from not regularly cycling out of ketosis. Veg will fix this, so it makes sense, but wasn't the answer.

If your T3 decreases it doesn't mean your diet tanked your thyroid. The body becomes more sensitive to T3 thus you don't meed as much. Same as insulin sensitivity returning amd lower insulin doesn't mean insulin is not working as well. I had thyroid cancer so I am on T4. When i changed upy diet, my meds had to be LOWERED because i didn't need as much. Higher carbs is associated with higher T3 but it doesn't mean higher T3 is good for you. The context matters. People can feel good or bad on lower T3 levels. Why it is lower is important.

Thank you dr Paul , you are absolutely right , I took my thyroid med for 8 years and when I was on ketogenic diet I had symptoms of hyperthyroidism instead of hypothyroidism, none of doctor couldn’t understand why and I quitted my thyroid med and everything got normal . They didn’t pay attention to my symptoms and just check my TSH that it was high . I suffered a lot to figure out by myself twhat was wrong and I found that it was related to synthroid . My TSH was 12 at beginning of my keto diet and it came down after 3 moths to 10 and then came to 7by itself without taking any med . My doctor who is endocrinologist couldn’t believe it . I’m glad I listened to my symptoms and my body and not listened to my doctors . I feel amazing with my diet and the ratio of my triglyceride to HDL is 0.5 😊. Thank you again ❤❤by the way free T3 and free T4 was normal .

He was very good. I have done this diet on my own too & have been researching since June 2022. Tried ketovore & keto last 14 months.

Hi, was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 12 years ago with a tsh of 97. I've been on 150mcg levothyroxine for that period. After going on low carb (keto since March 2021), cutting out gluten. Since March 2023, my t4 has steadi!y increased to 22 pmol/l , tsh 0.59 miu/l. GP over previous 6 months have reduced t4 from 150 to 100. They don't know the reason and have not referred me to an endocrinologist and can't give me a reason. I've never been tested for Hashimoto. Dr felt for thyroid nodules but cannot find any. Asked about swallowing problems and headaches which are not present. I've gone from 109kg to 66.8 and feel great, but still concerned. I'm due repeat tsh, t4, and t3 next week. Oh, they just tell me that low carb, weight loss will decrease thyroid function! Thanks alleviating some of my worries.
