The Tandem Axle F-150 is Finally Done!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After months of sitting because I was too lazy to get the work done, we've finally got the tandem axle F-150 running again and ready to drive!

The brittle plastic looks like the insulation/sound deadening material the encapsulates a sort of closed cell foam on some of the Ford intakes. Not all of the motors had them but some did, in my experience with the 4.6 at least.

@@wysmn I've seen a '99 F150 5.4L 2V that was a trade in at a dealer with over 400,000 miles, it wasn't a perfect runner but, it still had some guts, enough to light the tire from a stop. It was a rusted out hunk of garbage in way upstate NY or I would have bought it for a thousand bucks just to beat on in the back fields. I couldn't believe how well it ran and I checked the numbers on the block, it was the correct year and date to have been original to the truck if had been swapped it was done scientifically.

That is a "cool" idea using the heater bypass valve instead of all the work replacing the blend door. Their was a local F150 Super Cab from the late '90's (same body style as yours) with the 4.6L that had 999,999 kms and got recognition from Ford of Canada for the high mileage. Our local dealer had a big display about it. (I forget what they said the scan tool claimed the mileage was past that) At that mileage, the body was just staring to show signs of rust. Had a photo of it somewhere. Have fun with the truck!

There's a real simple trick..I'm willing to share the knowledge and in 5 minutes they'll all be out..even broke off flush with the head ones. Bust out the trusty Flux core gasless welder. Weld a fairly large glob right on top of the broken stud( it won't weld to the aluminum head.) Then take out your vice grips and clamp them to the glob and unscrew the glob along with the broken stud. The heat welding generates makes them come out like 🧈. Hasn't failed me yet .

That bad boy needs a deep cleaning, ocd panic engaged. Shame there isn't a way to make it a twin screw in the rear. A swap to a 5.4 4v (possibly with a blower), a strong 351w or stroker, 6.2L Boss, 5L Coyote or 7.3L Godzilla would be sick. My dream scenario would be to make it a long travel suspension, dual rear axle drive and no front wheel drive at all. Strengthen it up and have a mean "Pre-runner" that still has a functional bed and is reasonably practical for the street. I'm sure you're not going to take things even remotely that far. I still wouldn't waste money on a 2v when the junkyard has so many better treasures available.

@@guitargod66 Engine vacuum is used to put a slight vacuum on the sump (usually via the valve covers). The engine ultimately consumes the air and burns any oil mist it captures. The air has to come from somewhere. It comes from filtered and metered air before the throttle body. It's part of the mass airflow into the engine even though it doesn't get into the intake manifold via the throttle body. That's why it would be a vacuum leak if you open the oil cap.

Even a late 351w roller cam engine converted to Maf with some GT40/GT40P or cheap aluminum heads an aftermarket intake an OBD 2 comapatible or aftermarket equ like holley makes a lot more sense than mucking with one of those gutless wonders.

I'd rather just wear a sighn that say, my wife and I hate each other. It would save money and jokes from the paper boy. My mom said you got it to make up for somthing!

You describe all the work you've done on it and still haven't learned to leave ford's alone. I had one Ford in my life, a 1956 with a 296 V8 and it kept me broke. One Ford for me is three too many and I have hated them ever since. Found On Road Dead.

So it's still a 4x4. The last axle is a waste of space and weight.
