The Story of Cary Stayner

Cary Stayner’s younger brother, Steven, was kidnapped in 1972 and Stayner said that he felt neglected by his parents while they were dealing with the disappearance. When Steven escaped after seven years in captivity, there was a massive amount of media attention on the family. The focus was not on Cary though, which is why so many people didn’t notice him turning into quite a troubled young man.

    Yes, I've heard you usually have the most control just as the situation begins - certainly before you are tied up, moved to a different location, or managed in any way. Don't give the attacker the power to control you and decide what happens unless that is absolutely necessary. You shouldn't trust a strangers promise that they won't hurt you. The girl that ran and had her throat cut and was killed. That''s unfortunate but you know he was going to kill her anyway, so she had a chance to get away and she took it. - If I was a woman, I would consider carrying a small weapon everywhere it's legal to do so, like pepper spray, a small knife or a small gun (concealed w/ license).

Although in some cases, where the victim talks and gets the monster to see her as a person, it might work out, with the majority, the monster will never see the victim as anything but an object, so fighting back from the start is advisable. And another thing to remember: if the victim gets the upper hand at any point, for God's sake don't stop at just a minor injury to the monster! Don't knock them down and then try to run! Make sure they can't get up again, and THEN run!

    I think Cary Stayner murdering these women caused my curiosity and interest in true crime. I was 6/7 years old when it happened, it was so close to my town and I remember seeing the burnt car on TV, and then my mom telling me that they found the wallet of the mother, when they were considered missing, on a nearby street - it freaked me out. And then when Cary Stayner was named as the murderer and that his brother was Steven Stayner, it kinda blew my mind. I just remember my mom telling me who Steven was, that he was kidnapped in a town close to ours, and that he came back, and that his brother killed the three women on all the missing persons posters that were on TV and the few in the downtown area. All of it intrigued me and I’m barely realizing this sparked my weird obsession with serial killers and true crime in general. Wow, this feels so weird thinking about.

But the good news is that he'll come home a hero, after rescuing another boy, and they'll make a movie about him!" -"Oh, OK....so it has a happy ending?" "Yes, it will be great...he'll get his life together, marry and have a family. You'll be grandparents!". -"Well, that sounds nice" "Yes, it is. I should add, however, that he dies not long after in a motorcycle crash". "What?" "Yes, and your other son ends up being a serial killer who brutally rapes and murders women." That's not the most unlikely thing I've heard. If Cary was struggling, and all he ever saw was what he perceived as his brother receiving every ounce of love there was while he felt none, jealousy is entirely possible. Hell, even if that's not the case it's still possible. That being said, most people experiencing inappropriate jealousy don't decide to rape and murder people. That's where this guy differs, because he did decide to rape and murder people.

    Cary would have eventually killed Stephen. He felt like he was robbed off his childhood and never once thought what Stephen went through as a child even after he became an adult. Some children are born selfish, psychotic and lack empathy and as a society we do not have the capability of shaping some of them.

    Whenever you hear about these sadistic killers it always makes me wonder how much is genetics and how much environment although it’s most likely a combination. Many serial killers had horrendous childhoods of abuse and neglect but there are many others with similar histories that don’t. Nearly everyone also knows of “good” families where there is one kid who just turns out bad (and yes I know bad stuff can happen behind seemingly happy facades). A history of mental illness or traumatic brain injury is a factor as well but there are some people who just seem born bad - they lack empathy and compassion and no conscience. We always try to look back and find answers but we can never really know.

  • @jdahlberg1808

    @jdahlberg1808

    3 жыл бұрын

    For a while, I was sure that all serial killers who targeted unrelated victims either had abusive upbringings or experienced traumatic brain injuries. But after reading Robert Hare's book on psychopathy I had to abandon that theory. He described encounters with families like the ones you mention here, where there is absolutely no evidence of abuse or mistreatment, yet one child is just... I don't want to say bad... let's go with abnormal. Wait, is that worse than bad? One child is unique, but not in a good way. I should also clarify that I'm not saying that all serial killers are psychopaths, nor that all psychopaths are killers. Just that extra special few. The anecdotal evidence as it relates to psychopaths led me to reassess my beliefs with respect to serial killers and random victim murderers in general. There. Nice and succinct. Anyway, at this stage I'm back to shrugging my shoulders and accepting that I have no idea why people do these things. So if someone could go figure it out and let me know, that'd be great. I'll just wait here. Watching too many true crime videos.

It's a lovely movie, but now knowing the backstory to it and how the kidnapped brother died later on as well as what the older brother did afterwards is just too much. I had no idea. Poor little brother and poor parents. Any chance Cary's uncle was murdered by him? Unbelievable what those parents went through and the poor victims and their families. Very sad story. I watch true crime on several channels and none of them had mentioned this story before. It is so much worth mentioning and deserves more coverage.
