The innocence and nostalgia of the 50s and 60s quickly fade when one realizes just how easy it apparently was to kill someone whenever you wanted, and just pick-up and move to “forget about it”.

Yeah well he also took back his confession after Rose snubbed him when he saw her for the first time in court after they were both arrested. There is a really good, yet slightly older (it was made in the 90s) documentary on KZread that has the recordings of Fred’s confessions and him taking back his original confession. It had him talking about Rena and Anne and the girls and all kinds of stuff. Interviews with his lawyer and the appropriate adult who was assigned to him to help him read documents (if someone is illiterate they could assign someone tone partial and only help read and understand documents). Oooh the clips of Fred talking are from the documentary I’m talking about. It’s so good I highly recommend everyone who is interested watch it

Taken from the Wiki "In response, McLachlan punched Fred, who drew a knife and grazed McLachlan's abdomen. When punched by McLachlan a second time, Fred stopped defending himself. Years later, McLachlan recollected this incident: "He couldn't tackle a man, but he wasn't so slow in attacking women."[33] He and Rena continued their affair, and McLachlan became increasingly aghast at Rena's bruises and black eyes. On each occasion it became apparent Fred had beaten his wife, McLachlan extensively beat Fred.[32] Another time, McLachlan witnessed Charmaine-little older than a toddler-ask Fred for an ice cream from his van; in response, Fred struck her across the head, triggering another beating from McLachlan." Goddamn, John didn't punch that fucker Fred hard enough.

I like the way you write the stories in a way that highlights relevant information, details that tripped them up, the unusual behaviors that were blown off back in the day. I lived 45 minutes from Gloucester in '94. I remember vividly watching the story break on TV, more and more bodies found, then reading the horrific details in the national newspaper. It shocked me even more so as around a month before their arrests my friend & I went shopping in Gloucester for the day, but missed the last bus back. It was 1994 so no mobile phones. We wandered around the city until 1am in the morning when we finally got a friend to come & collect us. The West's said they frequently drove around the city at night together "hunting" for young girls to offer rides to, only to take them back to their house and rape them. I still shudder when I think of this today. We were only 21.

I remember this. One of the victims was the cousin of the novelist Martin Amis. (Lucy Partington, I think.) She wrote the most exquisite poetry, and was brilliant, kind and beautiful. Fred talked about her vilely - said she was nagging him to marry her and that’s why he killed her. Yeah right. I don’t often say this but he was pure evil.

You don't do Freds interview tapes justice. They start off with Fred arrogantly stating how the Gloucester police will be paying for his new back garden and end with him taking full responsibility for an indeterminate number of murders insisting Rose had no knowledge of any of it.
