The smelly mystery of the human pheromone | Tristram Wyatt

Do our smells make us sexy? Popular science suggests yes - pheromones send chemical signals about sex and attraction from our armpits. But, despite what you might have heard, there is no conclusive research confirming that humans have these smell molecules. In this eye-opening talk, zoologist Tristram Wyatt explains the fundamental flaws in current pheromone research, and shares his hope for a future that unlocks the fascinating, potentially life-saving knowledge tied up in our scent.

Interesting. There are several men that experience more attraction from women by increasing their testosterone levels in relation to strength training. Would have been interesting to see if this has an effect on the secretion of "smell" molecules in the body, in addition to making it more masculine.

That it interesting. I've recently been reading up on commensal vs pathogenic mouth bacteria. Perhaps there could be some chemical signaling (or at least scent recognition) between people based on our microbiomes? That seems to be the case in the armpit region.

00:12 🌡 "Pheromone" is a powerful word associated with attraction, but it's only around 50 years old, invented in 1959. 02:57 🌐 Pheromones exist in various animals, but their existence in humans is still uncertain due to cultural factors and individual differences. 05:51 🙃 Human smell changes during puberty, but cultural factors influence our perception of odors, making it complex to study pheromones in humans. 10:35 🌍 Research into human pheromones needs to be systematic, exploring the entire body, and considering individual variations. 13:30 🚼 The identification of potential pheromones could have significant medical applications, such as aiding premature babies in breastfeeding.

This is not so much a mystery to people like myself. I'm one of those who scent female pheremones. The effect on me is on a sliding scale of sexual arousal or disgust. The scent is not from the armpits but from the woman's genitals, especially left hairy but not essential. It varies considerably in strength to my perception. When I was in my 20's and 30s, I would scent a variety of pheremones strongly, typically on a first spring warm day when women choose to wear a little less. There are rare women who make me just want to close my eyes and inhale through my nose in bliss, these women are outliers but the phenomenon is so strong that I look for the evolutionary rationale. I don't think it's simply an absence of deodorant or ovulation. I chose a flatmate like that many years ago and the effect was uninterrupted from her. My theory is that it ties into instinct. We are woefully ignorant of how instinct works but if you follow Luca Turin's work on scent then you will know that scent is based on vibration, not shape of molecules. My theory is that our mitochondria co-evolved to pass instincts through the bottleneck of conception independently of human DNA and that their communications with each other extends bidirectionally from them to our axons and other nerve cells, they are our co-evolved symbiont. Possibly those few outlier women I've met, that was instinctual attraction passed to me through my ancestors in a mitochondrial equivalent of the Bene Gesserit breeding program as in the book Dune. In which case I bred poorly. Maybe it's simpler for moths. I still scent pheremones readily but as mentioned, sampling opportunities require consent.

It occurs to me that humans unlike a lot of mammals don't have a definite mating season. For example when studying a dog or a cat it's reasonably easy to pinpoint when the female is "in season". Are humans seasonal? Just an observation, probably means nothing pheromone wise.

If your a few days before, during and few days after ovulation. Nothing you do can keep it under control. Not just down there but during the cycle as the hormones changes the concentrations in your sweat will change as well. Men who pay attention a women can learn there smells. She had irregular periods. The first kid took about 9 months before she got pregnant during this time and year before I had learned at different times her smells. She wouldn't know when her period was coming exactly but I could tell her your period is a day or two away. Just a slight subtle smell. And our next two daughters she got pregnant twice on the first cycle. She didn't believe me the first time I told her second time she did.. I said now's the time your ovulating I can smell it. Most of the time it didn't have a smell and tasted like water. Had I not always been down there I probably wouldn't have been able to tell.

allow me to briefly give an anecdotal experience that may support the theory of pheromones: my wife and i were having some troubles, i decided it was time to move on (at the time), i ran into an old friend, courted and attempted sexual intercourse... i was erect at the idea, but when the time came i was flaccid, and i feel it was partly due to her smell, which wasn't terrible but, for some reason, not desirable. i very briefly later visited my current wife, and was so erect it hurt! sexual intercourse was as good as it's ever been. i will say with almost absolute certainty that scent was a huge factor, but there are too many other factors to consider... now, i will watch the rest of the video! :D this was AMAZING! i love these sort of talks that touch on topics that not many people focus on.
