Hahahaha, as a newly wed in 1989 I went to work one day and accidentally left the front door open. Lady across the road rang the police telling her that our front door was open and could they come and make sure everything was ok. When I got home there was a business card from the local police station asking us to call. They told me that they had attended / entered our property and that as it was such a mess they thought there had been a burglary, could I tell if anything was missing? Nope, nothing missing.... just my atrocious house keeping. I was completely mortified and have had a clean and tidy house ever since... I was cured, mortified... but cured!!

I don't do laundry every day but the biggest life changer has been doing the laundry when the basket gets full. Not stuffed and overflowing but full. As a newly married woman, this has been a huge help!

Your advice to - declutter and purge and have less with everything having a home it fits into easily and cleaning versus tidying just a steady 15 minutes a day MAY HAVE JUST CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER!

A couple years ago I went on a declutter rampage and tossed/donated at least 1/2 of the stuff we had. I was literally over it and we were moving so I just started bagging it up and getting rid of it asap so I couldn't change my mind. Best decision I ever made. Now I have to do a little purging again since my kids somehow accumulate stuff and it is just too much. Now to get off the couch since I finished my coffee, gotta get dressed and get into the kitchen to get it back on track. Thanks for these videos, they don't make you feel like a failure, they just inspire me to get up and get moving.

Amen!! I did the KonMari Method (which isn't necessarily minimalistic) but it honestly changed my life. We have been so conditioned to think more is better... and really isn't! Keep what makes you happy and you won't need to overly organize the rest, which makes for more time to enjoy the things and the people you love! :D

I love your message. You give me so much hope. I have fibromyalgia and chronic back pain. I've been slowly purging, cleaning, and organizing in between flares. It has been agonizing on my body and slow going but it has literally lifted my spirits instead of my depression over my limits. I loved your message cause it makes it so real and doable for me😊

Veronica Salas I also have chronic back pain, and a couple doctors wanted to diagnose me with fibro, but I've resisted that diagnosis (because I want to believe I'll get better someday, like after the back surgery I should've had years ago!) I SO feel you on the frustration & depression over limitations on cleaning (and everything else.) I'm a life-long perfectionist; I have memories of cleaning & organizing the toys in my playroom as a kid, and spent my teen years cleaning the house for my mom. So it's especially depressing for me to live in the clutter, mess & chaos that surrounds me now (I live with four messy people & five messy pets!) Or the despair of summoning the energy to clean, only to be forced to stop after just a short time due to pain, having accomplished hardly anything. The guilt for having my kids live in a far less-than perfect home, and not being able to be the mom I would be w/out the pain. That's the worst. I know having a daily routine of small tasks would help, but I'm so stuck in perfectionism that it immobilizes me! I commend you on adopting this method & making progress! People used to give me a hard time for "spring cleaning" my house every week, but now I feel like many people think I'm lazy as a wife & mother, which is a serious source of my depression. I try SO hard, but only those who cope with chronic pain & health issues know how much effort it takes to do the simplest of tasks (and how much we pay for it later.) I WISH I could clean every day, I WANT to deep clean once/week! I'm not a unicorn- I don't enjoy cleaning, but I get so much satisfaction & clarity from a clean, organized environment & life. I can't function or even think when surrounded by filth & clutter. It prevents me from doing other things because the cleaning is always what I did first, so I could focus on other stuff. I just wanted to tell you that I know how hard it is to change your habits to fit your new level of ability. I really admire you for what you've done! I wish you pain-free days & hope your spirit continues to be lifted!

Just here for the_ Comments I'm a single mum. My two are now 16 and 17 yrs old... I understand how hard it is to have a tidy clean home and good food at hand. And that alone is a full time job☝ and that's without stepping outside the door to earn money☝️it's like having two full time jobs but one of the jobs is 24hrs none stop...... Hats off to all full time mums as it's hard work and not ever given enough credit ☝️😤😤😤 I'm still out chasing Money and marching back home to start again. It can make you very unwell.

It's called legitimate suffering. You do something that you don't like doing so that, in the long run, there is improvement in your life or your day. For example: before I go to bed at night I clean my house. This is not something I look forward to and sometimes i just don't feel like doing it but I do it any way so I wake up to a beautiful home and I can do the things I want to do because I have already done the things I have to do. I also exercise every day so that I can have a fit and healthy body, feel good about myself, and look more attractive etc. Legitimate suffering!

The hardest part is getting started, but once you finally make yourself do it, you feel SO good! I will sit around avoiding cleaning for hours, but once I'm two minutes into cleaning, I'm like, "Ok now I'm gonna clean this, and this, and this..." and I don't want to stop. Then you step back and see all the work you did, and it's amazing. My boyfriend and I recently set up a routine to make it a little easier to keep up with cleaning. Here's what we do: every day we set a timer for ten minutes, then we compete to see who can clean the most before the timer runs out. It's just for fun, no prize except pride, BUT if one of us decides to continue cleaning beyond the 10 minutes, we have a chance to earn a point. Whoever cleans more gets one point (or if one person cleans significantly more, then they can get two points, but that's the limit). You can't opt out of the ten minutes unless you're not home or you're sick/injured, but once you get ten points, you get a free pass. The free pass gives you one day of no cleaning. My boyfriend isn't home on Wednesdays, so if I do my ten minutes or more on Wednesdays, I automatically get a point. This way it's kinda fun because it's like a game, and it also keeps things a little more balanced. If I clean more, that's not really fair (since we both work full time, and we're home the same amount of time except Wednesdays), but by getting a free pass every so often, it means my boyfriend has to catch up with me a little. This combined with reading The Joy of Tidying Up and purging my things has turned me into a cleaning unicorn. I actually kinda like cleaning now, and I even clean more at work. It's therapeutic, and I love how I feel and how everything looks afterwards. And I watch tons and tons of cleaning and organizing KZread videos for inspiration. I have them on in the background when I'm cleaning by myself, I listen to them when I'm in the shower, etc. I've learned so many tips and see so many beautifully organized pantries and bathrooms that I am obsessed with getting my home in order, which is really good because I just moved to a new apartment and I'm surrounded by boxes, and instead of being overwhelmed and freaking out, I'm finding joy in going through my things and finding homes for it all.

Laundry daily has always worked to me, also before work pick up and clean and cook after work. I would run the dishwasher every night when the kids were home. A clean house is less work than a dirty one. The rest would be on the weekends. I was a single parent and had garden, house projects and kid activities. I did not have clutter.

My way to keep a clean and organised home is to have people come over every weekend or on dinners on weekdays. I even invite critics who r gonna judge my housekeeping skills. This process keeps my house clutter in check throughout the week and has let me connect to friends n family which we so much try avoiding but now it leaves me feeling so gud. My cooking skills hv improved tremendously and somehow now I hv d motivation to care for my garden as well. Though its exhausting sometimes but I find this is the perfect way to connect with everyone, hv a clean & organised home and lots of laughter & peace.

Agree! I told myself when I'm starting to do this I would write down (likely in my phone so its with me) where I want everything to go and then do it. If I have to make changes then I'll add it in the notes but I dont have a label maker. If you want to use labels, I would use masking tape and a sharpie until you can afford the label maker or rememebr where everything is. (I beleive you can get masking tape at a dollar store, but if not I think Walmart has it. If not then Home depo/lowes should have some.) or just paper and tape will do.

My house is so disorganized, that it came to a point where it was irreversible. My house couldn't be cleaned ever. It'd break the laws of thermodynamics or something. I had no hope and was miserable everyday. Finally one day my best friend just told me to Google it. And I am lazy-ass bugger. Now I don't have the enthusiasm to read a long-ass web page. So my brains, I KZread-ed it. And I met this woman. Man she can talk!

Soon as I saw the heading on this video I had to click it. I honestly believe that we are long lost sisters lol. I am exactly the way you were. I was really bad at one time. No matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get motivated. For me it was partially laziness, anxiety and depression. Not a good combo. I am also one of those people who will talk themselves out of anything. I would however get upset with myself when I would look around. Coffee cups everywhere, dust bunnies galore, dishes all over the counters etc. But when I do get these amazing bursts of energy, my house is immaculate. Just doesn't happen very often. I have felt so much shame over this. Embarrassed to have friends and family over at times. I found it hard just taking care of myself. Let alone a husband and young son with autism. I will say this, the home itself was clean... baseboards, walls, etc but it was the mess that was making it look terrible. I have come a long way but still have a ways to go. I am so thankful for KZread because of videos I've watched and realizing I'm not alone but also that there are baby steps I can take to get out of this terrible rutt!! So thank you for sharing your story. It's not an easy thing to admit to. I look forward to watching more of your videos. :)

Girlfriend, you so eloquently articulated what the vast majority of us face re: keeping the house (and by extension our life) manageable, functional and, ultimately, ultimately enjoyable. I found myself nodding at all the things u said, and even laughing. When the house is chaos, it's Soo easy to get overwhelmed and not want to do anything at all sometimes. What u said about keeping the shower/tub clean so all u have to is a quick wipe up as needed was one of the things I've done that made a HUGE difference in my sanity and feeling more empowered to getting the bathroom in a place of overall general cleanliness. Also, not sharing a bathroom with my fella changed the world! Why do guys make the bathroom so icky so fast? 😊 And I think my dirty dishes get together and multiply at night. I've literally gotten so behind on getting dishes cleaned up before that I was too busy to hand wash a spoon, so I ate apple sauce with a fork! I don't recommend that, but the fork was clean at least. Sorry for the long ramble, but I loved what u said, and u are so very relatable. After watching ur video, I didn't feel so alone bc I'm def not a unicorn! TFS!! 😃😃

Crap like that. LOL that's what cripples my purging and organizing in my house

I'm going to bet money that you are a perfectionist! Almost every client I've ever had over thinks and over plans like this. Start small. Start with just two extra blankets (I promise you will never need as many as you have) or 5 extra towels (the worst ones that you would be embarrassed to let guest use). The stress of purging goes away the more you do it. Remember, you will be happier, healthier and have MORE money when you have less stuff. You can treat yourself to some new, beautiful towels in a few years with all the extra money you will save living with less. It's sounds crazy, but having less stuff will save you money...it's like magic!
