The Santa Claus Kidnappings | The Disturbing Case of Amber Daniels

"Is he going to kill us?"
On the early morning of December 4th, 1997, 10 year old Amber Daniels is standing in the middle of a dirt road, barefoot, in her pyjamas, faced with an impossible choice: run away on her own from the man who kidnapped her, or stay with him to try and save her sisters. What happened to her family the previous night, now known as the Santa Claus killings, would only be solved because of Amber’s courage, and she would make sure her kidnapper will pay for what he took from her.

It's actually incredibly critical that he tells her it's okay if she doesn't pick a photo. One problem with photo lineups is that people can feel a need to pick something, which can lead to a false identification. One technique I've heard is that they show the photos one at a time but without letting the victim see how many there are.

Why can't she be angry? Victims can be angry at the abuser and still love their family. Two things can be true. I hate it that people try to force forgiveness on victims of child abuse. Haven't we been forced enough already?? Also, sometimes the past affects you even if you decide not to let it define you. Stop demanding that victims heal themselves on everyone else's schedule. It's blaming them if they aren't able to 'hurry up and be fine again.' It can take a lifetime, and you can pass through stages of grief more than once.

She cannot live her life and be only defined by what happened to her. The anger will fester and destroy the good in her. And be unable to enjoy the beauty in life She cannot let the anger affect the beautiful child she has. Be unable to enjoy him and be a great mom if she is crippled by anger. Be angry and rage. But, then learn to move on and live.

One single slip up and your beloved sisters are dead. As a child. Let that sink in. Even if you hated him you'd still be the better person. You don't have to forgive anyone to be the better person bc victims like this are always the better person. Murdering 4 people, two of them kids, just to stick yourself in a little girl... Cases like this are what the death penalty is for.

I never understand how victims can forgive their attackers. I know its part of their healing but it must take a strong soul to actually forgive them and commend the survivors in these stories for their bravery and strength. I've been victim of domestic abuse (emotional and physical). I don't forgive her, but I've let go of the hate. And how far I've come since then and how strong I've become and she's still in the same situation as 20+ years ago. I pity her but don't forgive her!

You can’t protect yourself with a gun if that gun is being used to shoot you and your family. People living with handgun owners are seven times more likely to be shot by their spouse or intimate partner. In many of these cases, instead of being protective, the household gun is the instrument of death. An especially troubling finding is that the vast majority of victims in these intimate partner shootings (84%) are female. This case wasn’t even a partner. It was a foster sibling’s brother who appeared two years later knowing exactly where to find the gun. That means they hadn’t moved or secured the gun in two years. Knowing that women bear the brunt of second-hand risks that flow from firearm ownership, and with so many females in the house, the risk of at least one getting murdered by the home firearm increases. If you can’t secure your gun, best not to have one.

Just looking at Amber in the beginning of the video, brought tears to my eyes. Things she has to go through and the love for her sisters and what she did to save her sisters, it really tourns my heart. I think Jerry was born a pedophile and after two years, he exactly knew where to go and can easily get inside and kidnapped without any hesitation, it doesn't looks like it's Jerry first time. He must have done before. I'm just imagining Amber's state of mind inside Jerry's vehicle. Jerry was threatening Amber using her sister's. She knew if she doesn't do what Jerry says, he was going to harm her sisters. Amber's could have left her sister's and save herself but she didn't. She was a brave girl, even after what she has gone through, she can still thinks straight....I think others won't be able to do what Amber's did after what she has gone through.

My own sister is one of the biggest abusers in my life. As in, if this had been us, had I made the sacrifices Amber made, had I let myself get assaulted by someone and given up my chance at escape for my sister's safety, she would've very publicly accused me of doing nothing to save her and made me out to be just as bad as our kidnapper. I may not understand Amber's dedication to making sure her sisters stayed safe, but I sure as hell respect it. She was strong as hell as a child and she's strong as hell as an adult retelling this story. What an incredible woman.

What happened to them? Are they ok? Everyone handles grief and trauma differently. I hope they are all doing equally as well. And is Amber still best friends with JoAnn?

Bastard ! Im a 20 years sober alcoholic. Not only sober, but gone through lots of stuff to make amends and contribute to other’s lives. I lnow what’s involved. And for these people to get through that and be giving and given the second chance and all those children -and those kids all depending on them - then THIS . Takes me aback. I’ve started thinking about naïveté, and trusting too much maybe in their drive to now be helpful to people ? I don’t know, maybe not. Maybe it’s just life. Oh God. Help us all

A lot of people don't seem to think about the fact that police officers are just people. I'm astounded at the courage it would take to walk into that crime scene. There's blood and death everywhere and for all he knew, the killer may have still been hiding in the house. I'm proud of those girls for being so brave. I'm also proud of the officers who are brave enough to face down monsters as a career.
