I was 14 when I saw this concert. There had always been tickets for Pink Floyd, Zappa, Santana, but here everything was sold out. Knowing that pop and rock history was being written here, I was glued in front of the TV, while the master of the house was joking about the missing melodies and the bumbling around. Yes, those weren't the lines of the swing era anymore, catchy tunes, however. Every take. Rockpalast then became an institution for us, with 15, 20 people in front of the TV. In shared flats, U2, Rory Gallgher, guaranteed without parents. If I look at Rockpalast today, I don't understand the special thing about it anymore. +ghostriderYKT The reunion concerts were ok. They changed so much thought. Its not the same band that it used to be. The pace is much slower. its almost like they lost some of that rawness with age. Plus the super "crisp", nervous aggressive sound they had in this concert was definitely much better then their reunion shows.

i`ve seen them 1 or 2 years before this in hamburg with eberhard schoener. they have been musicians in his ensemble and almost nobody knew them yet. mr.schoener let them play the `support` for his own show and so they played their just released 1st album as `the police` and lots of the hippies in the audience were booo-ing. haha, a couple weeks or months later they got no.1 in the u.s. and were immediately too big to continue the actually succsessful tour as musicians with eberhard schoener. to me both sets (police and e.schoener with sting, summers + copeland) were awesome. an unforgettable evening. but this gig here is surely one of their greatest.

my friends who are musicians go on about Sting being a terrific bass player...they're right. what a great thing it is when you get a band of great musicians (technically proficient) who also make catchy-listenable pop tunes. Steely Dan comes to mind. On the other end of the spectrum is Zappa...great musicians but really unapproachable songs.

Sting is a very underrated bassist. His voice is so unique and the drums and guitar are so great people forget how good he is at the bass. He one of the greatest rock bassist to ever play. That's why Copeland could play whatever the hell he wanted to; Stings bass playing was so kick ass. Andy Summers would sprinkle his guitar parts over those two and it was magnificent.

I have seen them several times around Ghost in the Machine. They were good, but this is the top of their game. The best album they released, Zenyatta Mondata.

Yes & Yes.
I remember lying in bed listening to this concert being broadcast live on Dutch radio in the middle of the night. The audio was taken from German Television as a cooperation.
During a party we watched that live on TV and sung along. That was the hammer, went up late into the night.
I lived on this video in the early nineties....thank you very much for the post! Oh, and everyone checkout Stewart’s hospital sick echoing drum fill several bars before Sting starts singing in When the World Is Running Down...at 37:41.
What i absolutely enjoy about Sting's artistity is when he pre sing or finishes singing with phrases such ...(eee iooo h ooo eee i hooo , Roxenooo, or de doo doo doo de daa da daa Ihooo )...The guy is simply a genius
Amazing set list and great performance. I would kill to go back in to time to see this.
Another great show at this amazing venue ! If anyone likes Level 42 they had some amazing shows on KZread at Essen in 1983 and 1984 with the original lineup . The police and level 42 are my favorite bands along with Toto , journey , Rush and Genesis 😎🎸

Agree! it has been circulating on tapes for years since it was broadcast on live TV across much of Europe. I know, I was there tp see it - the first time I saw the band live in concert.
My first live concert and was the best ever... Unique sound from a unique band..

Yep, I saw this live on TV in late 1980, it was broadcast live across much of western and southern Europe. First time I saw the band in concert and a great opener for the powerful, flashy eighties.
I'm 63 now :-)
Love this music
i`ve seen them 1 or 2 years before this in hamburg with eberhard schoener. they have been musicians in his ensemble and almost nobody knew them yet. mr.schoener let them play the `support` for his own show and so they played their just released 1st album as `the police` and lots of the hippies in the audience were booo-ing. haha, a couple weeks or months later they got no.1 in the u.s. and were immediately too big to continue the actually succsessful tour as musicians with eberhard schoener. to me both sets (police and e.schoener with sting, summers + copeland) were awesome. an unforgettable evening. but this gig here is surely one of their greatest.

Great concert! Wish they were still performing today!
Tell you what,, the best ever
The Police at the top of their game before Sting's ego kicked in.
The Audio was much better than it comes across here. The whole place was crumbling from stings' bass on Walking on the moon.
I remember watching them Live on German TV. Big Party.
Sting plays that electric bass like it's a lead guitar... similar to McCartney's approach. That gives the songs an immediate interesting character and a sort of Jazz personality. Pretty damned cool!
Great concert!!!!
thanks for this, great concert
1982 war Police erneut in der Essener Grugahalle und ich war dabei 😊
Cha..Cha...Cha...
I've been in the audience.

Fantastic
L’energia di Copeland in Bring on the night è qualcosa di spettacolare.
I didn't know MacGyver could play upright bass.
Thats fucking rock ans roll !!!
The Police me gusta tanto como los grupos SUPERTRAMP y BEE GEES.
I miss Andy's chaotic guitar solo in Bring on the Night.

One of the greatest band's of all time... But the sound board mix is shocking
my friends who are musicians go on about Sting being a terrific bass player...they're right. what a great thing it is when you get a band of great musicians (technically proficient) who also make catchy-listenable pop tunes.

Andy is awesome
