The Dassault Rafale is the French Air Force and Navy's pride and joy, and can combine the roles of seven aircraft without many variants.
Medium-sized yet extremely powerful, the aircraft has impressive armament and is superbly nimble and quite discrete. But in an era of 5th-generation stealth fighters, the older Dassault Rafale can often be ignored.
Still, despite being built with Cold War-era objectives in mind, the fighter is a formidable foe against even the most modern aircraft in the world, and France’s adversaries are ignoring it at their own peril…

Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. What most people fail to understand is that once opposing aircraft are within visual range, stealth is no longer an important characteristic - at that point, it's a dog fight. At that point, it depends on the attributes of both aircraft and pilot.

Unfair comment about France air contribution in 20th century. Bleriot XI first modern monoplane. First aerial kill in history (Voisin). First straight forward shooting machine (Morane bullet). Main provider for US air force in WW1 (spad XIII and Nieuport 28). Fastest aircraft in WW1. Highest ace of all allies to this day (René Fonck). Many concepts (fuselage, canards, camaraderie, mayday, pan). Highest mig destroyer ace was in a Mirage. Ignoring all this is quite unfair.

Since the 2003 second Gulf War, there has been a “French bashing” bias in the US general public, which has continued - somewhat abated - up to now. Maybe this is the reason why Dark Skies considers that before the Dassault Rafale the French aircraft builders were not worth consideration. But the Rafale does not come from nowhere! Dark Skies, inter alia, overlooks the very notable performances of the Mirage III - also a fighter by Dassault - in the hands of the Israeli Air Force during the 1967 Six Days War and during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. __ .

Indeed. Just ask the Israeli… The Mirage III and 2000 were great export successes, and Dassault fighters always had a reputation for great reliability and low maintenance times and costs, especially as opposed to US fighters. Typically 2 to 4 times less maintenance hours per flight hour, as per user stats. That’s something user nations highly value. More than 1400 of the Mirage III and derivatives were sold worldwide to a total of 21 countries. Not bad for a 100% French fighter jet.

I would like to see even more European aircraft covered on this channel; unique designs and technologies, etc. And yes, the "French-bashing" was prevalent, but it's since tapered off, especially after the Paris bombing in 2018, that's when I noticed a drastic decline.

No matter how superior an aircraft may be, any modern aircraft, in the hands of a great pilot, is a very deadly threat to the superior aircraft. The F-22 is awesome, but not invincible. The dessault is a great aircraft and is a real potent threat to any aircraft flying today, when flown by a talented and experienced pilot.

I mean, this is a very noble thought and all, but simply is not true in reality. Modern air to air combat is facilitated using air to air missiles, hundreds of miles outside of dogfighting range. The reality is that with the F22s superior avionics and much smaller radar cross section it would win 999/1000 times against a Rafale or any other last gen aircraft. The difference in tech is insurmountable.

While modern missiles are significantly more reliable and deadly then those in the 1960s-'70s, if there is an all-out air war against a foe with well trained pilots and a large fleet of modern planes, at some point there will be melees with engagement at spitting distances. In reality, the French have fought more wars in Europe than anyone else (over 900!). Over half of which they've won. Of the remaining half, they ended in a draw. These are impressive statistics from their military history. Furthermore, France is the only nation that for many years fought simultaneously against three empires and consistently defeated them all - the Napoleonic Wars. At that time, France battled the Austrian Empire, British, and Russian. They even humiliated the Ottoman Empire in Egypt. France's record remains unbeaten. Hitler's Germany didn't last even 5 years. During World War I, it was primarily the French who bore the brunt of the war. The USA should actually take pride in having France as a military ally. As for people claiming that the F-22 doesn’t perform to the full extent of its capability during international exercises; this is true *but* is usually in reference to electronic warfare suites. The Rafale was likely operating under similar restrictions and it wouldn’t affect either aircraft in BFM. Suggesting the Rafale was max performing while the F-22 was limited is misleading. Let’s face it though, if an F-22 gets in BFM in real life something has gone wrong.

That statement misses a lot of context and is borderline untrue. It's still the most potent air to air fighter out there and will be for some time. Budgets change and it may or may not be around for longer than projected. The problem is it's low production and the fact that it's not a great multi roll fighter. The F-35 took all the production lines so there is no cost savings by running a new model. It's better to start over. It's still potent enough that it is used as a deterrent so that says a lot. Somehow that sounds different to what you said and people don't misunderstand.

The Rafale defeats were, to my knowledge, restricted to those cases where the fight took place Beyond Visual Range ; at the US' officers insistance, Rafale's integrated suite of countermeasure and active stealth SPECTRA was switched off. Meaning that in BVR, the Rafale fought against the F-22 with its main defence disabled. Not mentioned in this video, Rafale's integrated active defense system is called SPECTRA, and its goal is to make the Rafale detected as if it were another plane, in another place, or not at all - it supposedly can spoof any radar or detection system it is programmed for, and can be updated with a software patch - for example, those old infrared SAMs that can detect a F-22 or a F-35 won't work against the Rafale. Problem is, SPECTRA works so well that when engaged in a US or UK managed zone, Rafales must switch off SPECTRA to allow allies to see the planes... Back to the dogfight, a series of 6 fights ended with 5 draws and 1 Rafale victory over the F-22 - we're talking a delta winged small aircraft that can't reach Mach 2 against a vectored thrust monster that can go Mach 2.5 and turn on a dime. The latter should DESTROY the former, and it still got shot. Okay, that can happen - bad breakfast, pilot has a brainfart, whatever. The thing that caused outrage, was that first the US denied the "kill". Then, when the French Air Force unveiled the footage, they still denied it, saying that the F-22 had retained its external fuel tanks by mistake and was thus not manoeuvring as well as it could... Except said tanks were invisible at any moment on the video, and even then, the pilot could have jettisoned them. And strangely, after that event, any new orders for the F-22 were cancelled and the French Air Force was never invited to a competition again. Were all those somewhat related?

I put this in a separate comment, but the F-22 is considered the best because it can kill about anything at ranges beyond which other aircraft can do. HOWEVER, it may not necessarily be the best dogfighter, and if you get close, you have a chance, as the Rafale proved. Now, how likely it is for an airplane to get that close without some sort of setup... unknown. The US is starting to forget that dogfighting is essential for a fighter just as they did in the Vietnam era. There could be some extremely embarrassing events in the future as a result of that. I also think the legacy F-15, 16 and 18 fighters are likely to stick around for quite some time, because they were built around dogfighting (especially the 16).

At the beginning of each program we probe the partners to see whether we can decrease R&D and production costs together - without loosing full leadership or having our technologies stolen. Excellent video overview of the Rafale, but the theme of the underrated French aerial military prowess is very overstated. After all, the French produced the rightfully legendary Mirage fighter series, which the Israelis used in the 1960s and 1970s to dominate the combat skies over the Levant in two history-changing wars . Introduced in the 1980s, the Mirage 2000 series quietly but irrepressibly became one of the classic generation 4 fighters, which includes the American F-16 and F-15: with its innovative fly-by-wire avionics, composite material construction, and increasingly sophisticated upgrades, the Mirage 2000 not only won large overseas client sales but also, crucially racked up a sterling combat performance history, having served superbly in combat arenas spanning from both Iraq wars to the Balkans conflicts; from India's confrontations with Pakistan to coalition sorties in Afghanistan; and in combat situations throughout Africa to even South America. Startlingly agile, versatile, and dependable, the later variants of the Mirage 2000 continue to serve as a frontline multi-role fighter for numerous nations, including Greece, India, Taiwan, and, of course, France. So, yes, the Rafale is the generation 4.5 that, after a long gestation period and a once long fallow period in terms of overseas sales, quietly but irrefutably proven its mettle in its sophistication, versatility, superb performance, all of which has made it a relatively late-blooming but undeniable commercial success. The legendary Mirage III, Mirage F-1, the iconic Mirage 2000, and now the Rafale all provide an unbroken, sustained history of French military aviation excellence, a proven reputation of performance and success spanning six decades that refutes any false notion that France's military aviation reputation is unjustly underrated. Perhaps it is, but not to the extent that this otherwise excellent video suggests.

Also, I think that the statement about the World War I is not relative (percentage of loss rather than raw numbers) and lacks some context: the Trench War was fought mainly on French territory so French troops may have been more exposed (think Verdun), they fought for four years (which is not true for other allied), etc. That being said, it is well known that some generals didn't take soldier's life into consideration when planning their attacks.

Of all the fighters I’ve seen flying, 3 particularly stood out to me. The F- 22’s BRUTAL excess power being able to give the plane massive amount of kinetic energy to move about the vertical access in addition to the manoeuvrability on the pitch axis by the thrust vectoring. The Su-35 massive wing area and large control surfaces in conjunction with its thrust vectoring gives it bizzare, almost fake flight handling capabilities at speeds way too low to be able to fly. Have you ever seen a full size Russian fighter jet pivoting around its yaw axis like a 3D RC plane? Then the Rafale, a plane issued from a long lineage of delta fighters…With such gracious lines… Compare it to the 2 previously mentioned planes, it is very compact, roughly the size of a F-16. It flies with such elegance, and has remarquable maneuverability. It doesn’t need any thrust vectoring gizmo or had to give up any design feature due to stealth requirements. It seems like Dassault engineer produced an aerodynamic masterpiece. Watch a video featuring a low speed/high AOA pass and you will see the canards being lined up with the relative air, and not pointed up like a Eurofighter for example. An amazing package with proven combat and carrier-based capability. it is truly one of the best modern fighter in existance,.

Enough of the misinformation; context matters. Context: The Raphael is by far an inferior aircraft to the F-22 and the F-35 in all regards except cost. The rules of the engagement were such that the F-22 started out slower and lower in order to let the Rafale gain the advantage for training purposes. Until this change and others were made, the F-22(s) defeated every Raphael. The same training techniques are used in pretty much every NATO/US training engagement so that other aircraft (F-15,, F-16, F18, etc) have a chance to dogfight with the F-22. This is how we simulate unknown capabilities of Russian and Chinese aircraft in visual range engagements. The F-22 and F-35 practice dogfighting against the F-117 for stealth engagement simulations. The Raphael sensors can't see the F-22. But yes, if we change the rules to take away all advantages the F-22 has over all other aircraft then it comes down to which pilot makes the first mistake.

Any decently agile jet can challenge another in a dogfight. The F-22 is probably a good dogfighter but that’s not what it was built for. And by the way, the Mirage 2009-9 that also beat the F-22… was the F-22 low and slow again? Sour grapes…

Considering that the Rafale was developed contemporaneously with the supposedly amazing Eurofighter Typhoon, but went into service many years sooner, I would have some respect for the principle of an aircraft being developed and built within a single country rather than being horse-traded around several nations with differing opinions and influences. This wasn't the first time that the French went their own way in preference to a pan-European project - their Mirage was better and sooner than the Panavia Tornado (aka 'Flying Blue Circle', because of the concrete in its nose where radar should have been) - good enough that Margaret Thatcher had to beg Francois Mitterand not to support Argentina's Mirages in 1982, because they and their (French) Exocet missiles were too dangerous for British forces trying to retake the Malvinas/Falklands. The French also stayed clear of adopting US-controlled nuclear weaponry, opting to keep their own independent deterrent rather than following the UK by renting Polaris and Trident from the USA (I couldn't call it 'buying' - we paid, but the US still effectively owns the warheads). This was part of the reason why world-leading nuclear science evaporated from the UK, while the French retained the capability to (for instance) build nuclear power stations...so now, who does the UK need to build new nuclear power stations, I wonder...?

I first saw the Rafale in a libary book back in middle school, in 1995. It immediately became my favorite non-American aircraft. As an American, the delta-canard layout seemed something completely radical yet entirely sensible once I looked up what the canard can do. It makes the aircraft incredibly hard to stall, hence the extremely low minimum airspeed claims, although I highly doubt it was actually 17mph. I designed a paper airplane that looked as close to the Rafale as a 6th grader could pull off, and it's still my favorite one to make. Back to the real airplane. I've heard it said that the box on the tail contains an active radar cancellation device, which could potentially be the "classified" feature mentioned in the video. If that's really what's going on, it's an incredible leap, being able to concentrate on aerodynamics and not simply stealth and still end up with a stealthy aircraft. I didn't know about the 2009 shoot down, but I'm not at all surprised. America is forgetting the lessons learned in Vietnam, where the concept of dogfighting was considered to be outdated. Just launch a missile and that'll solve everything. The reason the F22 is so incredible is it can identify and destroy enemies farther away than any other aircraft. But, as the Rafale has shown, if you get in close to it, you have a chance. For this reason, I see the F-15, 16 and 18 sticking around for quite a while yet. They were built during the "we need to dogfight and win" era, with the F-16 being the poster child of that time. So back to the Rafale. You are completely correct that it is ignored at the peril of those who do so. I'm glad to see a presentation on it.

Would think that Canada's 80 some odd number of fighters would buy 20 or 30 F35's and then another batch of planes that could integrate with it's network system as networking is were the F35 really excels. Perhaps a modified Canadian Grippen E, a modified Rafale, then some F15E's to act as missile trucks and ground pounders with some legion pods. Nice video, but there are quite a few mistakes. First, french air force always has been "pristine" and worthy. From early efforts to the Dewoitine at the beginning of 2nd world war, and through all the generations of Mirages, France has been quite proficient in the airborne warfare, and remained so for a long time. Still is now, in fact. Also, it is inaccurate to say that the country relied on european allies to build its planes, as in fact, France was very keen on being independant as much as possible. To the point that as of today, it's still the only european country to have its own nuclear program. In any case, thanks for highlighting the plane :)

Its good to know the Rafale is so capable and the French are probably pleased they will never have to face the F-22 in real combat where its stealth capabilities will likely dictate who gets the first shot.

I'm French and I know pretty well the Rafale. There are many mistakes in this video. - Our pilots are well enough trained not to pass out during a high-g manoeuver. So saying "and almost passing out due to the extreme gravity forces" is a little bit exaggerated (and the French aren't worse at this exercise than any other nation). - During the "French Effort" section, you don't talk at all of the previous Dassault fighter aircrafts built in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. But the Ouragan, the Super-Mystère, the Mirage III, Mirage IV, Mirage F1 and the Mirage 2000 were (and are) also great aircrafts which performed extremely well on many conflicts and were sold to many different countries. And as the Rafale, they were build by our country only and showed to be next-generation fighters. So no, the Rafale isn't the first French exceptional fighter aircraft, that's forgetting our past. And NO, saying "the french air force relied on fellow european union nations to collaborate and develop new aircrafts together" is entierely wrong. Some aircrafts were build in collaboration with other countries, as the Transall or the Alphajet, but we kept building our fighters aircrafts on our own and they were (and are) among the best ones of the planet. - The main disagreement between France and Great-Britain was not only the size of the aircraft but mainly the fact that France wanted an aircraft capable of landing on carriers, which Great-Britain didn't. - When we built the Rafale, we already had a lot of prestige thanks to the previous Dassault fighter jets (mainly the Mirage III, the Mirage F1 and the Mirage 2000). - It is not 0% stealth but has some stealth capabilities, and yes, it isn't a fully stealth aircraft but for strategic reasons, not financial ones. The aircraft is meant to reach targets at very low altitudes and very high speed, allowing the aircraft not to be detected by ennemy radar until it flies just above it. Dassault also worked a lot on the countermeasure system which is currently the best in the world, allowing the aircraft to be extremely safe. This system is named Spectra. - The aircraft is not able to supercruise at Mach 1.8 but 1.4 (that's the theory, in reality it is barely supersonic without the afterburner). - You forgot about Greece among the users of the Rafale.

It shouldn't be that surprising. Stealth is to avoid radar, not win dog fights. Not to say s stealth fighter couldn't dog fight well, but the comparison in the title is a bit silly. And there's also the pilot, far more important than the jet. I reference the story of Chuck Yeager beating a younger pilot, and said pilot blaming it on his older jet. Mr. Yeager traded jets and still won.

Indeed. From my understanding, an f22's preferred strike range is dozens of miles away while staying undetected. The F22 can do some crazy mid air moves with its thrust vectoring, and absurdly large control services. That said the raphelle prolly spelled wrong is a masterpiece of a plane for what it was designed for. It has impressive thrust to weight, outrageous handling, is small and quite agile, and can corner with about anything in the air today. It can literally pull so many Gs the pilot will go out before the plane does and it's not restricted from doing it either. The pilot has to know better. 11G is an absurd amount of force. The F22 can indeed engage from further away and can also dogfight with the best of them their are a few F16 guys that will tell ya that even though the F22 is big it can corner with them. if you wanna talk funny though Thier are a few rumors out their saying that a couple of A10 pilots have achieved Air to Air kills on F16s and F22. The A10 may be slow but if you try to turn with it you are gonna insta lose. It's turn radius is so tight most pilots don't understand it can turn 360 faster then most of them can turn 180 and it's got a big scary chainsaw on its nose and can be equipped with sidewinders for self defense.

Nope… they accomplished this during flight testings. Since then, they installed aerodynamic electronic limitations to protect the pilot and the structure against “bad” situations. During those tests Dassault even say that the Rafale had been able to fly backward… no joke! As a young adult, at that time, I was amazed of the capabilities of this new aircraft. I became an aeronautical engineer (now a pilot) and tested the fuel pod on the Rafale prototype (which was different than the “final” version as we know it now) for modal vibration testings and analysis. At that same time the US revealed they were planning to build a “stealth” fighter, either the YF23 or F22), which forced Dassault to reduce the radar signature of the original Rafale. They did the best they could based on the original Rafale project. They succeeded pretty well with what they started with. Now with SPECTRA, the Rafale is stealthy enough for nowadays combats. I think being the size of a sparrow as radar signature is good enough! The Rafale proved it enough when they were the first to penetrate Libya’s Air Defenses (S-300s) which were on high alert during Gaddafi’s regime (right before his fall). They went in and out without being detected. The Rafale accomplishments in different recent wars speak for itself when you learn about it. French military in general don’t like to brag about their accomplishments (unless it becomes obvious), because the most part of the French population don’t like being involved in war conflicts, for good or bad reasons (colonizers’ syndrome!? 🤔). Nonetheless, IMHO, beside not being an “interceptor” by itself (that’s why missiles exist), the Rafale is one of the best, if not the best (😉), twin-engine multi-role (being the only omnirole) fighter, beside the cheaper single-engine fighter Gripen (which basically replace, with some improvements, the Mirage 2000 disappearance). The F22 will stay the best and unaffordable “stealth” fighter concerning high altitude air supremacy… until it lasts. Even the US can barely afford it and already planning its retirement. War tactics change, and technology advancement will always prevailed.
