Destroying an Entire Air Force with a Box - Operation Southern Watch
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
It was December 27, 1992, and Lieutenant Colonel Gary North would not let the Iraqis trespass into the no-fly zone imposed around the Kuwaiti border. “The Box,” as the aircrews called it, was a restricted area implemented by the United Nations to protect civilians in Iraq and neighboring Kuwait from Saddam Hussein’s abuses.
As he led a squadron of four F-16 Falcons, North was warned of a contact rushing at high speed toward their position. He immediately ordered two of his pilots to go after the enemy, but in a matter of minutes, the hostile aircraft was inching closer to his position.
The leader then instructed his men to cut off the threat, impeding his escape route and forcing him into combat. As he would later recall: (QUOTE) “Someone was going to die within the next two minutes, and it wasn’t going to be me or my wingman.”

Biggest reason we dominated was hardly mentioned, the AWACS. I may be biased as I served in the USAF in the mid 80's as a computer programmer (552nd AWAC Division). The ability to see the whole battlefield real time and command/control forces came of age with the E3A AWAC.

Also little known because the leaders wanted the press and everyone to think the F-15Cs were the first in country, and they were the first USAF aircraft to land, but the E-3s led them there and were the first USAF in Saudi airspace, staying on orbit until the 15s landed safely. @@1milesnpr Thanks for the reply. I was stationed at a C-141 base in California. Per Wikipedia the max speed of a C-141 was 567mph or 912kph. The C-17 that replaced it has a cruise speed of 520mph or 830 kph. While not as fast as many planes I myself do not consider that as slow. Especially for a heavy cargo plane. Admittedly the 141 with 4 TF-33 engines was loud and dirty by today’s standards. The 2 biggest improvements the C-17 offers are more cargo space and the engines with thrust reversing that the 141 never had. This allows for much more capability. Basically the USAF took the things the 141 lacked and built it in to the 17. Also due to limitations in the 141A came both the B model and of course the C-5 which still flies but with upgrades including new engines in the Super Galaxy. Also I don’t thing the US sold any 141s via foreign military sales unlike the 17. All were vast improvements on predecessors including the C-135. Am curious if Australia will end up with any B-21s. I hear they are very interested. Have a good day mate.

You do so well on so many varied topics, you did really well on this one too. OPERATION DESERT SHIELD was the defense of Saudi Arabia that lasted until Jan 15Th. On the 16th, OPERATION DESERT STORM commenced, the initial plan for the Air War was called OPERATION INSTANT THUNDER; Feb 24th saw the initiation of DESERT SABRE. Not many folks know that the two operations as well as the Naval component and it’s feint of making the Iraqis man beach defenses all came together under the umbrella of DESERT STORM.

Came here to say this. Though, the only place I've seen the ground offensive referred to as DESERT SABRE is in a book called Jayhawk, which is about VII Corps. Certain Victory has no mention of a DESERT SABRE or SABER, and I know the 101st didn't call their component DESERT SABRE (they called it like Rendezvous with Destiny or some such, I'll have to look at my thesis again).

I was on my first tour in Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai Egypt when this happened.
It was an exciting time to be in the military. We'd been sitting on our butts since the 70's. It was hard to pry troops away from their normal duties to train for war in the 80's. That changed PDQ after this.
Solid Snake? Oh wrong kind of 📦
This is a wonderful channel, but, FWIW, I wish your editing process showed the particular aircraft to which you are referring, not random pix of combat aircraft. Example: showing an F-15 while talking about the MiG-25.
"A lone MiG-25 Foxbat" then proceeds to show an F/A-18 Hornet, jeez, what's the poor Hornet done to you, mate? 😆
f4g wild weasel did certainly not cover the borders. the wild weasel configuration is specifically a SEAD version. they are litterally the guys taking out AA radar.
I was in Desert Storm and one of my friends was a Ranger *ON THE GROUND IN IRAQ* on 02 AUG 1990...the day Iraq invaded Kuwait. He was in a firefight that day inside Iraq and his Ranger buddy was killed. So, America had our units inside Iraq *BEFORE* Saddam invaded.
"A Lone Foxbat" flashes a picture of a Hornet.... How lazy.
There are plenty royalties free Mig 25 Foxbat pictures available. Why do you show a random F/A-18 instead at 6:56 then?
