The Plane that Can Beat an F-16 Fighting Falcon
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In May of 1999, over 5,000 Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control in Kargil into India’s side in an abrupt assault on international peace. India responded by mobilizing 200,000 troops, but the sky-reaching mountain summits only allowed 30,000 men to reach the battlefront.
However, this was not the same Indian Army the Pakistanis had encountered years before; in a formidable joint arms operation, the Indian ground troops were supported by an empowered Air Force.
Despite most of their aircraft being grounded due to lousy weather and unable to operate at such daunting altitudes, one fighter rose to the challenge: the Mirage 2000.
The small but impressively potent French aircraft climbed over the peaks of the Kashmir mountains delivering a devastating series of precision strikes that flushed the Pakistani forces out of Indian territory. Overwhelmed by superior firepower and international diplomatic pressure, Pakistan ultimately retreated.
The world sighed in relief as the two nuclear-armed powers stopped fighting. Even so, the formidable Mirage 2000 left a lasting impression, showing the world that sometimes the most monumental changes can come from the smallest packages…

The M-2000 is not small. In fact, seeing it up-close it looks appreciably larger than an F-16. This does not have to do with the physical dimensions, which are similar for the two aircraft, but with the total volume and height of the airframe above ground, with gear down. With the delta wing and an engine significantly less powerful than that of the F-16, it is great for 1-2 instantaneous tight turns but then runs out of energy. More often than not, in real situations 1-2 turns is all it takes, however.
@erikdouglas9952

They aren't similar at all. The M2000 is almost 30% shorter 10% thinner and the only spec even close 4% height difference.

@@erikdouglas9952 About 15m and 14m in length and 10m and 9.1 in wingspan for the F-16 and M-2000 respectively, is hardly a 30% difference in dimensions. The difference is greater in empty weight (F-16 being quite a bit heavier). However, my point is just that the M-2000 is not the tiny fighter described. In fact, having seen the two up close and side-by-side, the M-2000 does look larger, probably because of the optically larger fuselage and greater ground clearance.

@Damitsall

It definitely isn't equal. The only thing the Mirage can do better is 1 circle fights. It can pull some AOA, but that also leaves it vulnerable to the way an F16 fights. First off the F16 is one of the best BVR fighters ever, there's no comparison here. In a merge the F16 would just take the Mirage to the deck and engage it in a rate fight. The F16 is the best rate fighter ever (besides 5th gen fighters). As long as the pilot was patient and fought his fight, he would win every time.
@geekadeuzan2103
Жыл бұрын
@@Damitsall the delta wing configuration actually allows the mirage to pull harder, it has been seen in Red Flag exercises that mirage have better authority than F-16s. And I'm not sure where you got the info that the F-16 is one of the best BVR aircraft when that role was given to the F-15 while the F-16 was designed as a close-in dogfighter at first. Sure it can BVR but it's definitely not the best plane at it, any gen 4.5+ plane is better suited for that.
@Damitsall
Жыл бұрын
@geekadeuzan I agree with you, that's what I said, the Mirage can pull more AOA (Angle Of Attack). There's a downside to that though, the Mirage has a ton of drag which makes it loose energy very quickly. That's why when you see dogfights with it and other delta wings (not as applicable to the newer ones) they often get into a "toilet bowl" or spiral down to the ground. They are cashing in altitude for energy. Which is exactly where the F16 wants it. Once the fight gets to the ground, it often becomes a 2 circle or rate fight, in which the F16 dominates pretty much everything. The F16 was always designed with BVR in mind, but yes it was designed with dogfighting in mind first. Although personally I would agree with you that I like the F15 better, there is no denying the F16 is very competitive with it and a lot of pilots would argue its better.

That was battle of Munto Dalo it was a turning point in Kargil victory. Air Marshall Nambiar and Wing Commander PJ Thakur remain unsung hero's. Hat's off to them. That our country remains safe.
The Mirage 2000 is no smaller than a comparable F-16. The length is the same (minus the pitot tube), and the wing area of the mirage is considerably greater than the Falcon. The F-16 does, however, have a more powerful engine, but also weighs a bit more. The 2000 is a very powerful platform and it's no miracle, to anyone who knows, that it performed as well as it did.
As an Indian, Me and my countrymen very much know the importance of the mighty Mirage 2000 Not only it was the counter against pakistani F16s but also thrashed them in the mountain ranges after israely upgrades. The nuclear capable Mirage 2000s were also our nuclear deterrence against china.
If you've spoken to those who worked at General Dynamics when the f-16 was being conceived you will hear that the more ambitious engineers wanted a tail-less delta-winged aircraft with dual shock-cone intakes, much how the Mirage-2000 would take shape. However, it was fealt by more conservative members that they were already pushing the envelope with artificial stability and advanced fly-by-wire. Following the motto "Never try too many new things at once" they opted for a more conventional tail-plane layout. It is interesting that later General Dynamics would market a delta winged version of the f-16 with the added xl prefix.

@@puryanto5076 The delta dagger uses a classic delta winged design with natural aerodynamic stabilty. The classic delta has some severe drawbacks which is why Daussalt chose a conventional tail-plane design for the Mirage F1, the successor to the legendary delta-winged Mirage III. The mirage 2000 and the f-16XL (prototype) uses a compound-delta wing. In addition, aircraft such as these have their center-of-gravity well behind their center-of-lift making them inherently unstable in flight. Think of a hammer thrown with its handle facing forwards; it will want to rotate. Hence they need an advanced artificial stability computer to maintain control. This solves the major drawbacks of the classic delta-wing.
That's why the french called dir Mirage, it can change its appearance to look like a Fulcrum, a Typhoon, or a drone if you like.
If you're going to talk about airplanes you should show the actual planes you are talking about. It would help with the confusion.
The Mirage 2000 has a beautiful design, is sleek and swift, and is packed with a lot of firepower.
@cjwrench07

It is everything you said but swift, mostly due to its specific wing design. Those old school true tailless deltas bleed energy in a turn worse than any other type of wing; even slightly more than the forward swept wings of so, so, many failed prototypes. Don’t get me wrong though. I love damn near all of Dassault’s aircraft, and their clearly evolving designs.
Please don't forget how the Israeli Air Force and SAAF used variants of Mirage in different conflicts. The impact they were unreal. Then came the Cheetah version of the Mirage 2000 , joint design of Israel and S.A. Deniel. India was not the first to use them.
Delta wing planes are beautiful, and the Mirage 2000 is one if not the most gorgeous of them.

"if it looks good it will fly beautifully" Dassault ( design philosophy, confirmed with those words) .
Such an awesome short range fighter, I’m so happy these dudes are allies!
The Mirage and the F-16 are basically polar opposites in terms of aerodynamic maneuverability. The Mirage focuses on low speed instantaneous turning with its large vortex generating low aspect ratio delta wings while the F-16 is almost entirely focused on high speed sustained turns with its noticeably higher aspect ratio cropped delta tapered ish wing with horizontal tails instead of just a vertical tail like the Mirage.
@williamzk9083
8 ай бұрын
The Delta wing can generate enormous amounts of lift but it comes at the expense of high drag that ultimately slows the aircraft down. In other words the delta wing gives excellent instantaneous turn rate but poor sustained turn rate. due to the deteriorating L/D ratio at high alpha. Fly by Wire, Vortex Generators, leading edge flaps all combined to almost eliminate these issues but not quite. Willy Messerschmidt criticized Walther Lippisch's flying wing and delta wing designs by saying that if you wanted lift by increasing pitch for a turn the elevons are providing downward force just as you want that lift. I think a little bit of thrust vectoring for pitch control and trim would finally eliminate the deltas disadvantages.
I love how the establishing shot is a clip of a MIG-29 Why not call the channel, "Military Lore and Random Airplanes"
This is proof that it is the pilot and training that makes the biggest difference, as long as the involved aircraft are all competent.

Curious why the video is heavily sprinkled with sequences of F-15s and F-18s.
That Sidewinder IR anti mountain missile was a gamechanger.
India took a license to make Mirage 2000 ... They didn't produce the aircraft in large numbers
It's the fly-by-wire system of the Mirage that makes it special. It has nothing in common with its older Mirage 3 / 5 / 50 siblings and the delta configuration has huge ADVANTAGES like rigidity / durability. The FBW of the Mirage 2000 makes it more manouverable than both the F16 and F18 especially at higher altitude and it has the same approach speeds (landing) as the Mirage F1 !!
You forgot to show how IAF used Mirages in balakot strikes using Spice Laser guided bombs
In his jet combat board games Air Superiority, and Air Strike J.D. Webster pointed out another French design quirk. Their drop tanks combined with rocket pods. Thus saving two hard points, and as unguided rockets are as easy to replace as drop tanks it is win-win.
It isn't the plane that was better. It was the pilots training and experience. Period.
Yeah, focus more on quality. Having the wrong aircraft removes people like myself from your audience. That's unfortunate because I do truly enjoy your video's. I also find the "that can beat" a little pedestrian. The better pilot is a huge part of which aircraft would come out on top. Tactics are huge in this generation and weapons range/ability are similar.
@dmrevis, There were scenes of other aircraft besides the Mirage 2000's yes, but it is understandable that the French company (Dassault) would allow only very limited video and still photos of these remarkable and very capable fighter aircraft types. I was surprised that it was successful in the ground attack role, at extremely high altitudes in the mountains... This aircraft, is definitely a force to be reckoned with... I give this video Two Thumbs Up!!!👍👍
That refueling probe though, God. All of that engineering to build that amazing aircraft and they couldn't design a retractable landing gear?
Dassault must have learned from the old A4 Skyhawk design philosophy with a small package and hard-hitting weapons load, but went supersonic with it.....Nice. I have a few hours in the Atlas Cheetah C back in the late '80's. Would have loved to fly one of these.....
a legendary story no doubt...go india!!!
Check the videos by Growling Sidewinder. The Mirage 2000 is killer in a one-circle fight. But it bleeds energy in a turn like going out of style. So if the fight goes two-circle then F-16 dominates.

GS has a awesome channel he not only does some great dog fights he also tells some history on the aircraft’s and gets the new aircraft’s to try out before they become available to anyone else also check out Longshots channel.

While what you said is true, and while DCS is the best simulator available for everyone there is one thing it can't simulate : how difficult it is to sustain 7-9Gs for 5,6 or 8 minutes for the pilots. That's why when you look at "real" dogfight training, pilots do very agressive manouvers from the beginning, to win as fast as possible.

@@anubis5397 The tactics of air to air combat are NOT simple. But history shows that the airplane with a two-circle advantage (rate fight) usually comes out on top.

The fight usual doesn't go to a rate fight when GS is flying the Mirage because the fights are either rigged or he picks weak opponents to fly against. Do you ever wonder why his opponent often fails to fly his own aircraft to it advantages?
i really love the 70's! everything was bullpup and delta wing, so futuristic!
The F-16 is far more apt to beat itself than fall victim to a Surrender Falcon.
Thank you for having such a clear, clipped presentation style. Facts and details are presented in a brief yet totally understandable manner. Thank you.
Mirage 2000 looks beautiful
I saw jaguars and Mig 29s at the beginning. Then F 18s. 😂

jags are half french so it's a pass... 😋
May have been mentioned - there's a great 2005 French movie called Sky Fighters centred on the Mirage 2000.
Usually quite enjoy these videos but the footage used in this was utter balls, typhoons, f-18s
Wow it took more than a minute to show a Mirage 2000 in a video about it. Even then I think there’s more F/A-18 footage
The F16 is the Honda civic hatchback of the fighter world. It’s not the best, sometimes it’s not even good, but it’s cheap enough that people will buy it anyway

F16 is a beauty. & I'm french. But rafale is cuter, sorry.
I am very confused, the mirage 2000 is a mono tail. Every plane seen with two tails is not a mirage 2000. As far as I know, we french have not made any dual tail fighter...
Both are good aircraft. It comes down to training and weapon load.
I love most of the Mirage variants: Mirage 29, Mirage Hornet, Tornage, Miragaele, Mirage F-1 × 2000
I didn't know that the Mirage was a copy of the F-18! Fascinating stuff!
Dark Skies next video will be the English Electric Lightning, but will be using stock footage of the Mig21
No plane does miracles, it's the man behind the machine that makes the difference, going forward, for everything else there's Drones & AI...🤔😉
I use Mirage 2000 as my laptops wallpaper.. just love it..
who can resist that lethal french beauty !
It's important to mention the reason for Pakistan to enter the disputed territory. Years earlier Indian forces launched a surprise campaign and had captured Siachin which was before that a no mans land. After diplomatic pressure failed to remove Indian forces from the glacier Pakistan launched the operation to capture the hills in Kargil. Which then they used to coordinate artillery on the highway below. The aim being to render the highway useless. The highway was used to supply the Indian troops stationed in Siachin. Pakistan had hoped that if Pakistan to keep the highway shut until winter, the soldiers stationed at Siachin would have no supplies for the winter and would be destroyed or rendered useless. Thanks
Such a beautiful aircraft! Really too bad you can't get your hands on more footage of it. Good info though.
Cool! The Dassault Migrage 29-18-2000-Typhoonet! More than meets the eye.
There was more footage of the F/A-18 than the Mirage, LOL. Dude, what up with that?
Hornets dominating a video about the Mirage, enjoyable none the less!😁
When Denmark was looking for replacement aircraft, the F-16 and Viggen competed... The Viggen was better, it was the price tag put them off, but they would be getting more systems capability: Fast forward to the F-16 Viper and how much it has been loaded up to stay in the game with turtle decks and other changes. It still (especially after the canopy glass modification) was better that the Viggen in radar cross section. Looking at the Cranked Arrow Falcon... Somebody though what the French had done had merit. Note: The Mirage 2000 adopted the "wasp waist" of the F-106, this was a very important aspect of why the six was such a player in maneuverability.
This video would be much better if it depicted the Mirage 2000 instead of showing stock footage of other types of jet fighters with only rare glimpses to the actual Mirage 2000.
they just forgot to add a canard to it ;)
Just show still images of the aircraft, we don’t need video of MiGs and Hornets
45 years of Mirage 2000 - the star of Ace Combat series.
The F-16 has defeated both the F-35 and the F-22; so good luck. She may be an old gal, but still has a few tricks up her sleeve.
YOU HAVE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT FIGHTER JETS WITH AMAZING COMPLETE DETAILS
(If I had my own country building my own military including an Air Force) Well, add Dassault Mirage 2000 to the shopping list.
