3 belts on the line, 2 of the most fearsome champions to lace up gloves, and 1 night that would prove who was the superior fighter. When Manny Pacman and Jaun Manual Marquez agreed to pit their skills against each other in a championship unification bout, little did they know that it would be the beginning of one of the greatest rivalries in boxing.

I agree. Marquez also did a great job avoiding getting hit flush with Manny's straight left. Pacquiao, whether intentionally or not, fought Marquez's fight. He countered really good and used his footwork to avoid Marquez's counters. Pacquiao was still the one putting most of the pressure and Marquez was reacting. Manny deserved the win as he just simply outworked JMM. Like Lederman said, "when the rounds are really close, you look at other things". Same. We were all in shocked when he KO'ed Many. Normally fans would hate him for that but we have nothing but respect for Marquez. Truly a remarkable and honorable warrior.
Kudos for pointing out that Pac changed it up in the 7th. Manny was never a one trick pony even then. Larry Merchant also noted that Pac began using his boxing skills after going KO crazy earlier. The great myth about this encounter is that JMM dominated the fight after the 2nd round. Even years later pundits keep coming back to this fiction. In truth, Marquez just became competitive. A couple of side stories; a minute into the 1st round, Marquez had a passing thought that this would be an easy fight. Seconds later he was on the canvas with a punch he never saw. Pacquiao hurt his left hand on the 2nd knockdown which affected his attack later. For the fighters, the aftermath of this war must've been truly shocking. All that blood, sweat and toil with no victor.
@Ryenobal
Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I had Pac winning comfortably on the scorecards by 5 points (exact same as Lederman) in this 1st encounter. Even if I gave Marquez the close/swing rounds, I still had Pac winning by a couple of points. Pac took an immense lead and Marquez rallied to make it very competitive, but Pac won some of the later rounds to seal the deal. It was a moral victory for Marquez because he wasn't stopped and outboxed Pac in many of the middle rounds. But, round-by-round, Pac soundly won. I consider this fight and the 1st Bradley fight as the 2 worst robberies of Pac's career.
@redghettosun
Жыл бұрын
@@Ryenobal The powers that be wanted to stop Pacquiao before he wiped out all the big money featherweights in one year. This draw also set up a few big "What If's?". If Pac got the decision, like he should have, we would've gotten a 2nd Pac/Marquez fight in 2005 not 2008. With the leverage of a victory against JMM, Pac's team could've insisted that he use his Reyes gloves instead of the Winning brand Morales insisted on the 1st fight. Would that have made a difference? Not %100 sure but the rematch gave us a clue.

To me, especially as a kid, this was like goku vs vegeta. A timeless rivalry, but both respected the other's strengths. Every subsequent fight was a display of how well they knew each other's style and movements. As a Filipino I have nothing but the utmost respect for JMM. His timing and power is phenomenal. Plus, I've always been more of a vegeta guy anyways lol. Any mexican is more than welcome at my filipino gatherings. Hell, I'll fix them up a plate of food myself. Two of the best.. Loved the whole 3 fight war.. Manny is one of a kind..
Best combination punchers of their era producing a quadrilogy worth of action, skill, and heart. One preferred starting the combination punch firefight, while the other welcomed it with open arms to attempt to take control of it. One was like running into a tornado and the other more like multiple brick walls.
Great video. I would only say that at this point in Pacquiao's career, he was not yet the complete fighter that was mentioned in the beginning. Marquez definitely was; since he was 5 years senior and had been in the game longer. What Pac had though was extraordinary speed, an iron chin and just like Marquez, an unbreakable will. Barrera, on a better night and with his great counterpunching skills could've stopped Pac from getting inside. Pacquaio, as we saw with Morales, was beatable.
