The Other Side Of Seoul, South Korea 🇰🇷

Today we explored Doksan-dong here in Seoul, South Korea.
We had no plans just want to see as much of the old school side of Korea as we can while it's still here.
We ended up in a Korean grandma's restaurant and had a massive kimchi-jjigae feast complete with magkeolli.
Never a boring day here in Seoul, South Korea 🇰🇷

02:30 that yellow building is not a school but a kindergarten. Slide is equipped for fast easape of small children ( who is difficult using stair or escape ladder) from fire. It is not for playing. 05:43 it's Chinese food shop for Chinese. Also shopkeeper is Chinese 12:00 this restaurant specializes in samgyupsal (pork belly) or duck bbq, and also korean style duck or chicken soup. Kimch jjigae is prepared for lunch. You got a very ordinary local lunch meal.. 17:13 korean cheers is geun-bae (means drying bowl) 22:37 It is perilla leaves that have been seasoned and then aged 22:50 Seasoned Bellflower Root 23:00 green onion kimchi 23:33 stewed lotus root Magkeolli is made from rice and low alcohol, having plenty of live probiotics. So good for health. 7,000 won per person for that much food is very reasonable and even cheap. The slightly sour taste in kimchi stew comes from fully fermented kimchi, not vinegar. The sour taste of makgeolli is also a taste of fermentation, like yogurt.

At 5:40, the sign at the grocery store where you went to buy the ginseng drink says Chinese food in Chinese characters. It's a place that sells Chinese food ingredients, and the woman appears to be Chinese. Most Koreans are not that horrendous towards foreign tourists. I really enjoyed your video.

21:59 I exclaimed when I saw he putting several wild sesame leaves into his mouth without rice. It's fortunate that it tastes good, but typically, it's more delicious to tear off one sesame leaf and eat it with rice. In Korean cuisine, all side dishes and soup varieties are seasoned to be eaten with rice, so consuming them alone might be salty.

The meal in this video is the most traditional dining culture in Korea. It's served with various Ban-chan(so called side dishes) to eat rice, and even Korean BBQ is originally just a Ban-chan. In other words, the main dish and the side dish are not divided, but one table itself is just one main dish. It's very similar to the Nasi Padang in Indonesia. If you put Nasi Padang on one plate, it becomes Nasi campur (mixed rice) Like...Korean meals in one bowl becomes Bibimbap (rubbed rice (with sauce and Ban-chans)) which is transformed to gimbap as a fast food like a sandwich. Since you have visited Indonesia before, let me introduce a very interesting food, 'Jjamppong'. There are many theories about the etymology of jjamppong. The most reasonable theory discussed among Japanese scholars in recent years is that's from the Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian language) that Indonesia is using. In Indonesia, The meaning of 'Campur' (pronounced as champur) in the word of 'Nasi Campur' is mixing. Japanese Champon and Korean jjamppong are not just food names, but they also mean mixing. However, the word 'Champon' in Japan was not originally used on the main island, but was originally used in Okinawa. Okinawa has very different cultures from Japan's main island and the people in there are ethnically close to South Asian. In Okinawa, Champon not only means mixing, but also means the rice mixed with veggies similar to Nasi Campur in Indonesia. So we can guess 'Campur' in Malay became the name of a mixed rice dish (=Nasi Campur) named Champon in Okinawa It became the name of the mixed noodle dish made by the Chinese living on the main island. And then, it changed into a spicy mixed noodle dish in Korea. That's why Campur, Champon, and Jjamppong all have the meaning of mixing. When I was traveling in Indonesia, Campur sounded so similar to Korean jjamppong. So, the moment I heard that word, immediately I noticed it meant to mix. Since then, Jjamppong is so interesting to me because it's a mixture of four cultures, and I recommend it to you because it's one of the most loved Korean style Chinese food in Korea.

You normally have makgeolli with jeon (pancakes). You are right that tofu does not have much taste on its own, so it is a perfect vehicle for absorbing flavour (like with kimchi jigae). I paid $18 for a sandwich here in Canada recently. It's mind boggling that you can get a full meal for two people for $18! It's sweet that the Auntie really took care of you. With Korean cuisine many of your best meals will be with Mom & Pop (not corporate) places.

Side dishes can be considered as parts for eating rice. The same goes for soups and stews. The way to eat Korean food is to put rice in your mouth and then use side dishes, soup, and stew You can season it properly. Among Korean foods, bibimbap is a mixture of rice and side dishes. It's nice to see that you can experience the life of the modern people, not the tourist destination, and feel the true taste of the trip. I'm rooting for you both. ^^
