Korea's Cheapest Street Food Market 🇰🇷

Gwangjang market is a super popular tourist destination here in Seoul, South Korea.
Now I'll be honest it isn't really up our street so instead we headed to the outskirts of Seoul to a classic traditional Korean market.
Over here it was fantastic, proper old school atmosphere like nowhere else.
We ate loads of Korean street foods like kalguksu, odeng, korean fried chicken, pork rib pattys and the humble hotteok - a classic here on a cold day in South Korea.
Everyone we met was also lovely, Korean people are my type of people.
So yeah you don't need to go to tourist places to have a good time, just go out on your own and explore 🇰🇷

Some small mom and pop type restaurants serve cheaper, lower quality Kimchee sourced from China. Most Korean restaurants serve free banchan (side dishes) with entrees and some small restaurants serve china sourced Kimchee to keep overhead costs down. China sourced Kimchee are generally not as fresh, tasty, or sanitary as genuine Korean Kimchee. The drink at the 24 min mark is called “shik-hey.” It’s a slightly sweet, refreshing drink made with rice. And the lady was apologizing for misunderstanding your order for just 1 drink. She was offering you guys a free refill to make up for the misunderstanding. Cheers!

The lady who sold you the drink felt sorry because she served up 2 drinks when in fact you had asked for only one drink. She apologized for misunderstanding you. So then she said that she would fill up your cups after you are done drinking it. Later she told you to come back after you are done doing the tour so she can give you free refills.

The rice drink is called shikhae. Its a traditional drink before Korea had cane sugar they would add some sort of malt enzyme to rice to convert starch to sugars creating a sweet rice drink for special occasions. Usually they add sugar if you get mass produced ones but that lady was saying she makes it from scratch.

9:04 it's not a 'pretend'. it's a real head of the recently slaughtered pig. Of course, we don't buy the raw head to eat(actually we buy processed(pressed+steamed) pig-head). The whole pig head is used for a small wishing-luck- ritual of folk religion. it holds when someone launches a business(from a huge companies to small stores) or buys a new car. Usually a big table is set with 1 pig head and dishes of typical ritual foods. People make 2 deep bows on the ground toward the table and put some amount of paper money in the mouth of the pig head. TTTT, i'm almost 40yrs old and lifetime seoul resider but I've never seen the ritual in real life. Till 1980's it was a common thing but only small number of people still do it. Funny thing is that pig head wholesaler picks heads of good looking with fat cheeks and goes on a procedure to make them smile.

Translation for you :) So the guy at 33:06 is hilarious. Rough translation is, in a very humorous tone; he was saying ahh you’re from England, however I cannot speak English! The people around him chuckled. Then he started saying honey honey honey! in Korean to you, then said it twice in English, and then started saying something like alas, how amazing is it that I, at least, know the word honey in English. How amazing! I didn’t even know I could do that. Wow, just amazing. 😅 The people around you all laughed more. Then he heard you say thank you in Korean and was impressed. Then the grandma asked for honey but said it in English and he started joking with her saying you’re Korean!!! Why on earth are you suddenly speaking in English?! Look at this lady, speaking in English, it’s honey!(in Korean) not honey(in english) LOL do you not know what honey is in Korean??? Teasing her suuuuper heard. Then for the next bit in the coffee shop; When u said just one, she repeated one? In Korean and you said ok? Ok. Then she asked something which your gf thought she said sugar. I actually don’t know what she said but after she asked if you wanted a hot coffee to which your gf thought she meant take away, but the lady understood the takeaway part anyways. Then the funny part is at the end, she said the price, and then pointed at the sign and said if you don’t have money then you can give me one of these 😄 Then at the end she said it’s extremely hot when you were giving her the money and she said it’ll be a grave matter if you drink it too fast. Then asked if you wanted cold water since it’s burning hot. Then as you were leaving she kept saying how hot it will be. Warning you haha
