If this show made you feel like TNG, you should give Deep Space Nine, and Voyager a try. They are Star Trek, they are worth it. My favorite is Voyager. But what he says in the end of this review, if you are looking for a show that is still being aired, "that is Star trek", thw Orville is it. Unfortunately, enterprise, discovery, Picard, and under decks don't give anywhere the same feeling as the first 4

I have to give props to Isaac's actor, I do not know how he does it, his character demands that: he cant show his face, he cant significantly change the tone of his voice, he cant show a lot of physical emotion. An yet he is able to consistently communicate an incredible amount of emotions through simple pauses and slight body movements, not only that, but because of the story sometimes he has to carry the emotional core of entire episodes, now THAT is a great actor.

I'm so happy you've covered this show - I came in at season 1 thinking this would be just a fun comedy Star Trek TNG (which it was for a bit, and that was fine with me). With season 3 especially though I feel like it's evolved into one of the best legit science fiction shows on TV right now, in turns exciting, moving, tense, action packed and genuinely thought provoking. If they don't renew it for season 4 now that it's truly begun to realise its full potential it would be a crime against quality television.

I agree, Alan. Although it’s a blatant copy of TNG (even the episodes are similarly themed), the show has evolved, matured and has become less slapstick. It has replaced the slapstick with more serious - but not so serious that it spoils it - episodes. It’s thought provoking, as well as all the other very apt adjectives you use. Fingers crossed that The Orville gets another (well deserved) season. P.S. I will say, however, that I think that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, just about gives it a run for its money, but The Orville still currently (comfortably) pips it.

Makes me so incredibly happy that this show is finally getting the attention it deserves. I went into this show thinking it was a Star Trek spoof, I was wrong. This show is very much a love letter to Star Trek, but it stands on its own so incredibly well. I love it, I love the cast, and I also love that we get to see Seth Macfarlane get to be a serious guy for once, proves that he’s so much more than sex jokes and crude humor. I adore this show.

Season 3 was really a step up from the first 2 seasons, which I also really enjoyed. That episode with Gordon going back in time was unbelievable. I'm glad to hear you give special mention for it. Gordon is one of my favourite characters, but I was praying that would be the last episode we'd see him in. It could've been potentially the best exit from a show ever. Absolutely riveting episode. That scene with Mercer trying to convince him to come back and him vehemently rejecting the order was honestly one of the most enjoyable scenes I've ever seen in science-fiction. It spun me around. I was hating Captain Mercer during it and couldn't accept his position from a moral standpoint, but at the same time I knew in ordinary circumstances he would be doing what I felt was the right thing. It captured very nicely the dual nature of the human condition - on the one hand a sort of single-minded intellectual and technological pursuit, and on the other a spiritual, social dimension that is, no matter what we try to tell ourselves about our intellectual endeavours, the very essence of being human. One of my favourite 'Trek' episodes... I usually always think of 'Inner Light' and 'Darmok' as great examples of these incredible poignant and meaningful pieces of science fiction. Now, 'Twice in a Lifetime' goes alongside these great Star Trek episodes that truly captivated me.

I absolutely love The Orville, and happy to hear that you did too. I will argue that some serious props goes to Seth MacFarlane for the fact that he wrote about half of the episodes himself, but his character is sometimes a relatively minor character. A lot of people assumed it'd be a vanity project, but he often times had the other characters take the limelight, even in those that he Wrote & Directed, so I feel that this was quite an inaccurate assumption on many people's part. Oh, and 2 or 3 episodes were Directed by Jonathan Frakes -- just in case you didn't notice that.

I honestly think Season 3 deserves an Emmy nomination. The way they incorporate social themes organically into the characters and such, is a Master Class in how to do that. Star Trek lately just focuses on the social themes instead of the characters and it's never addressed organically, so it comes off like "We get it!!!" "See, We Get it!!!" "We're doing it mom, we're getting it!!!"

I've never really watched Star Trek at all growing up. Always been more of a Star Wars fan, that's just who I am. But when this show first came out years ago, I gave it a chance. And I gotta say, love at first sight. I personally believe that this is the best TV series Seth McFarland has ever done. The first two seasons were amazing, playing tribute to Star Trek as well as the Sci fi genre in television. While I loved the first two seasons, they weren't perfect. I never saw an episode I hated exactly, but knew some of them weren't as great. But that all changed with "New Horizons". All 10 episodes of this season were outstanding and perfect to a T. Gordon's alternate family, The dilemma with the Moclans and Kirll, Issac's relationship with Charly. It was ALL perfect! And while yes, some of the humor was cut back, I personally like to think at the point it's due to experience. During the time of the first two seasons, Ed and some of his crew were still relatively fresh to being part of the Union. They were basically Rookies. So during "New Horizons", their much more experienced officers of the Union and known when to be serious and appropriate in certain situations. Overall, this is one of my all time favorite TV series. The first two seasons were classics and the long waited third one on Hulu is simply a masterpiece in my book. I'll be heartbroken yet dumbfounded if they don't move forward with more seasons.

As somebody who loves both Star Wars and Star Trek, I gotta say - Trek is much better. It's much more optimistic and hopeful of the future, and smashes our biases right in front of us. The Original Series got death threats for years because they had the first interracial kiss on television, because in the future, they figured these petty differences that divide us would no longer be. Lightsabers, Star Destroyers, they're all cool don't get me wrong - but Star Trek portrays the Future of Humanity, and that's a whole other animal. Check out Strange New Worlds. You'll see what I mean.

As someone who is also a fan of all things sci-fi, I’d advise avoiding Kurtzman Trek. Allegory is done so much better on the Orville and it’s easy to see Seth grabbed as much of the people from the OG trek shows that if they transported “The Union” into pre Bad Robot Treks Universe it wouldn’t feel out of place at all. SNW did get some praise but I think that was more for it being better than Picerd and STD. Not a high mountain to climb.

The Orville... a genuinely great watch! What I like about it is comedy is still there but more subdued, and the show is also is made for a capable audience not dumbing the subject matter down so far the show by explaining every little nuance. That is similar to ST:TNG, but seriously lacking in the newer frivolous iterations of Star Trek, if they even deserve the branding. Season 3 is definitely deeper and presenting challenges to the audience like ST:TNG, and similarly instead of latest editions of Star Trek telling you what to think, questions are posed for the audience to contemplate how they would choose given the same circumstance. Definitely worth watching.

It’s a refreshing return to the thought-provoking, weekly story telling that I feel is missing in current television. The humor is there, the heart is there, the sci fi is there. I love this show. I hope more people give it a try do we can get more seasons.

That episode with Gordon brought me so close to tears and I never ever cry from films and stuff. It was so good
