At first I was confused about the whole flashback incident with the chimp attack. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The overarching theme of this movie is about how we are always willing to risk our own safety and lives to capture the spectacle of something (and also eventually monetize it). The whole cast of the show with the chimp was willing to risk their own safety by trying to create a spectacle out of an untamable monkey. And Ricky’s character tried to do the same when he thought he could tame it with the fist bump. I think Ricky also has this dark fucked up part of him too in that he never stopped trying to chase the spectacle of taming the untamable. He even has an entire room in his office dedicated to the horrific chimp incident. He once again chases the feeling of creating a grand spectacle of trying to tame an untamable alien by feeding it horses. But in the end, that’s what bites him in the ass.

A movie that is so weak in its plotting that the audience has to make-up scenarios to make it work in their head later is simply bad filmmaking. My packed house viewing walked out in silence because the promise of the trailer was derailed by a bad script and overindulgence. The rabbit chimp story was the one Peel should have told.

I think the movie had a really interesting take on the alien. Instead of the stereotypical little green men it was a single alien that was the flying saucer itself. I thought it was cool as well when it got rid of the saucer disguise and it looked like a giant mess of sheets/fabric. The scene where the woman was being eaten was the most disturbing for me. The way she’s slowly being inched toward that weird orifice is terrifying, and her screams sounded so real. It’s nice to see a movie that doesn’t just focus on jump scares and actually makes you feel scared and disturbed.

I get the connection, but I actually feel like this movie is disadvantaged by how much Jordan tries to tie in the underlying theme of this movie. Sure, they both portray the same metaphor, but what do the 2 scenes actually have to do with each other within the context of the movie? I feel like the point of this whole movie is for Peele to push his underlying theme rather than make a movie that has a coherent story.

The chimp scene was one of the most terrifying, especially when you see it in full context. For me, the build up in the first half of movies like this is more thrilling, because you don't know what to expect, but you know something terrifying is going to happen. Then when they are actually riding around facing the beast, the fight or flight response kicks in and the tension is broken.

  • @elfsong713

    @elfsong713

    2 жыл бұрын

@Drink Your Whatever uh, yeah, it was clear that something bad happened but it was made incredibly vague until the full scene played out. The scene with the chimp was meant to show aggressive behavior patterns of wild animals, and that Stephen Yeun's character learned the wrong lesson from that encounter. He thought he could tame Jean Jacket, because he survived the chimp attack, but he survived not because he was special, but because he was fixated on the shoe and the table cloth was blocking him from making eye contact.

Kinda missed with the chimp part. It plays exactly into how tragedy and trauma is used for spectacle. The character literally survives something so horrible then profits off of the event. Furthermore, he recreates that connection of prey and predator with the horses show. And in the end it comes back to hurt him because he didn’t learn from his experiences

It's interesting because I took it similarly but to me it was about how he almost connected to a monster (the chimp) and therefore felt compelled to tame another monster (alien) as if he was immortal or somehow destined for it rather than just see himself as lucky the first and first few times.

The lesson that you can never truly remove the wild from a wild animal, that a certain level of unpredictability is never trained out of an animal was also missed. I wonder if Jurassic Park is the movie Jeremy thought of. Initially it was King Kong, but King Kong didn’t seem to include an idea that the wild can be removed from the equation.

This movie is about humans exploiting animals for the sake of making a "Spectacle" Jean Jacket only transformed itself into 'flying saucer' because it's what humans wanted to see and rick was able to tame it in this form by feeding it horses. Just like how Gordy was tamed and made to wear human clothing and perform for our entertainment. Both the animals eventually find a trigger - a mirror, that makes them see them for what they really are, wild animals. At the end they both show their true forms.

You need the Monkey scene it pulls the whole theme of the movie together. It was the original viral video (in the movie-verse), with the public loving the extreme graphic shocking moment. It was Ricky's moment, which set him up for mediocre stardom, even the girl who had her lips bitten off by the chimp was wearing a shirt to promote that she was the girl in the video.

I saw this with my partner, he also found the chimp plot a bit disconnected.. But to me having a character go through a trauma, not learn, and get punished for it, is a huge theme of the movie. The main characters toe the line, they still want to profit off the alien, but they respect that it's dangerous and needs to be understood. I like that the main characters are still questionable in their decision making, but it's an improvement to Jupe.

Idk what Jeremy means by the first half being boring. This movie is 2 hours long and you see the alien by the 30minute mark. I dont think it is what he said it is. I was terrified when the decoy was being taken up right next to him. That is the scariest thing ever. Casually strolling around your farm just to see something hiding in a cloud taking up something abducting it. What would you even do? Obviously this guy in the movie ran but to be honest I would have dropped dead from dread seeing a site like that. It is what fuels my messed up nightmares./

I wanted the first half of the film to go a bit quicker because I wanted to get into the meat of what it was about, but in retrospect I like that it gave each character a depth that most films don't. The chimp part is important because that story mirrors the main story about whether nature is tameable - the whole film is about our relationship with animals, in addition to the spectacle stuff. Yes you could cut it out, but I suspect it would make all the rodeo scenes drag because you don't know or care about that character. I like that Jordan Peele throws a lot of ideas at you, even if it's more than you strictly need. He's ambitious and that's a good thing, most films don't even have one idea in them

The bunting (the dangling rope with the little flags on it) indicating Jean Jacket was close was like how the floating barrels indicated the shark was near in Jaws. Angel is a tech guy who believes in UFO/UAPs is like Hooper's character. The climax is also similar to Jaws. Jean Jacket exploding from trying to eat the big balloon figure as Em is trying to get "the shot" is like in Jaws when the shark explodes from Brody shooting the scuba tank in its mouth.

Nope was a loving tribute/homage to classic Spielberg, in particular Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and especially Jaws. So many brilliant Spielbergesque qualities to this movie, from the characters and music to the cinematography and old Hollywood 1950’s style visual effects with the UFO. But it also reminded me of classic Alfred Hitchcock. The way that Jordan Pelle builds tension and suspense in this film( as well as all his films)and the suspense and buildup is better than the payoff, just like Hitchcock used to do. Even touches in the film reminded me of classic Rod Serling era Twilight Zone in the vastness and scale and scope of the environment and focus on a small number of characters in a mysterious unusual situation throughout

He said that the first half of the movie is boring, I'm assuming he's referring to how the first hour is about character development, and it also relates to what Jordan Peele said before when he said this movie wouldn't have been made 5 years ago because it focuses a lot of non white people as main characters. Jeremy pretty much fits that version of a white person that Peele was talking about. If you are black and don't want to believe me, then check out Jeremy's review to the 2016 movie The Birth of a Nation. Jeremy is that type of white person who is unaware of his white privilege.

Couldn't agree more with your opinion. It's not a horror movie but there is one scene that it's disturbing and terrifying as hell (and maybe another small part here and there). But it's not overall horror. And the first half of the movie is kind of boring. I do get it's to set up the characters and situation and they're a bunch of horse trainers living in the middle of nowhere, so of course they'd be more laid back. But it didn't feel necessary and honestly felt like it didn't have enough substance it needed. Usually these slower parts develop everything you need for the end but it felt kind of empty. Cool ideas but missing depth. Could have sped up the pace and connected the concepts better. Like we really needed more about the dad and his relationship with the family. And connecting their lineage of their great grandfather being in the first film ever. I get what it was going for but it felt kind of shallow. But I enjoyed it. Definitely my least favorite of his films though.

Super excited for this movie. The distinction between "thriller" and "horror" is an interesting one. No brainer to say everything is subjective on some level, but I have mixed feelings about the "It didn't scare me, therefore it isn't a horror movie" argument. Not saying that was Jeremy's argument, but I do feel like the horror (or at least, things marketed within the horror) genre gets a crazy amount of scrutiny...not necessarily about the quality of the movie, but about whether or not it's worthy of being called horror on the basis of whether or not it scared the moviegoer. I think horror and comedy are the two genres that really get that strict scrutiny because I think people expect to either be frightened throughout, or made to laugh throughout, respectively. I don't know if I have a greater point to tie that all together, but I've felt that way for a while. Have a great day, and thanks Jeremy.

I’m a Jordan Peele fan but I do not think he makes traditional horror movies. I define horror as something that is frightening that anyone can relate to. Get Out imo is a very solid political thriller with some horror elements. I’m sorry but if we are being honest, you have to fall into a very niche category to be afraid while watching Get Out. The only people who have anything to worry about are black men and black women who date white women. While there are plenty who do so, that leaves out all non black men and heterosexual black women, the majority of americas population. While Get Out was incredibly well made and a fun watch, most people won’t leave the theater thinking about what they would do in that situation or worrying that it could happen to them in some alternate universe. Us tends more towards the classic concept of horror because having a tethered has nothing to do with race or gender or sexual identity. The themes are related to class and socioeconomic status. So if you live top side and you even think for a second there are like people waiting to take us all down, there is more of a creep factor involved because we are all screwed. However if we think about this a little deeper, the vast majority of us would actually be the mole people even though we live above ground. Most of us aren’t trust fund babies and are doing what we can to carve out a bit of comfort and happiness. So we are the mole people and the 1% are the people living above ground in the movie Us. If you think about it too long, you can understand the motivations of the tethered and some of the horror elements are lost. Nope looks like a sci fi flick with a few horror elements. With each movie I keep thinking that Jordan Peele is serving up classic Twilight Zone which at times can be unnerving and surreal with well placed horror elements. It takes a lot to scare me but I like to think I can recognize what horror is, just because I’m not scared doesn’t remove it from the genre ya know. But Jordan Peele has a very interesting take on the thriller genre imo. Sorry for rambling lol.
