When I found out that there were so many sequels planned I did worry that it would be a cash grab but honestly after seeing Way of Water I'm not worried. Love that he mentioned the score! Such a daunting task for Simon Franglen. The tune he mentioned (for the Hometree) is Horner's "Danger Theme." He quite literally used it in every score he wrote. Troy, Wrath of Khan, The Amazing Spider-Man- You name it it's there! But each time it's a bit different. From a pick up, to a trill, or maybe an ornament to the bigger theme. In Avatar, it's its own full on theme. It was used in the destruction of Hometree and the low point of the war. Horner, of course, used it in dangerous moments in the film (hence the name "Danger Theme") where the main characters are, well... In danger. Same for The Way of Water. The hunting and deaths, it plays in those scenes to serve as continuity to the world and story duo with picture and music that Horner and Cameron built. I love that Franglen brought it back and used it! It's a dominant sound in the Avatar continuity, especially in such emotional scenes.

James Cameron knows that it's impossible to write a story without it resembling something else. He puts a lot of emphasis on making the story look greater than it actually is. Actually, I think very few movies came close even today in terms of CGI quality. There is this thing in the industry (and I think Marvel is the root of evil here) that apparently doesn't value proper CGI anymore. Give the artists time to make it right. Instead, scenes often look half-baked and too artificial. James Cameron literally invents camera systems, and underwater Motion Tracking and takes a submarine into the Marianna Trench to study the deep sea to make his movie look perfect! A little note about the tune you hear that’s reminiscent of the James Horner soundtrack in the original movie. There are a number of times where if you think about it during action sequences, it seems distractingly quick and sped up (character movements). I wasn’t sure if that was a symptom of the frame rate choice, or the motion smoothing applied? I suspect the latter. Though I also pondered if it was intentional to just give a sense of the Na’vi being alien where as their movements are slight more abrupt and rapid than our own here on the gravity Earth. But Cameron is too classical of a showman to go for something that nuanced, because it wouldn’t be worth it’s weight. It would cause more questioning than immersion, like it did with me. This tells me that sped up motion effect must be unintentional and resulting from the smoothing, possibly also a limitation of 3D tech (which is how I viewed it). This gripe was particularly evident in the first confrontation of the humans and Navi in the third act. When the deal was first layed out to Jake by the General. Though the action was well oriented and choreographed there, it was riddled with that feeling of being jarringly sped up in pace. Almost like you put a video on 1.2-1.4x. Something just felt off and unsatisfying. Like in old TV and movies where they purposely sped up action scenes as a novelty. I would agree though, the film overall was great.

Phenomenal film! James Cameron’s passion and creative energy is on the screen. It’s an achievement for cinema; for science-fiction and fantasy fans; for anyone that dares to dream big! Way to go, James Cameron! You did it. You made the impossible happen!

There is this thing in the industry (and I think Marvel is the root of evil here) that apparently doesn't value proper CGI anymore. Give the artists time to make it right. Instead, scenes often look half-baked and too artificial. A little note about the tune you hear that’s reminiscent of the James Horner soundtrack in the original movie. Spot on with your review. Last 45 minutes crushed it. I agree on everything, you said. Classic storytelling, the world building was next level. The spectacle was off the charts. Every single dime spent on this is on the screen. I was afraid that since Cameron is getting up there now, that he might be getting a little soft, but the action here, and like you said the passion and the desire to entertain the shit out of this was on full display. IMAX worthy in every way. The underwater scenes were perfection. Fave Cameron movies will always be in no particular order Terminator 2 Aliens True Lies Avatar Avatar 2 Titanic Abyss (despite not having seen it in about 30 years)
Jeremy Jahns is THE only movie reviewer I trust now. Honest and candid as always.
I absolutely enjoyed the first one. Watched it twice in cinema. I did not watch it again off cinema but I still remember it's plot and story line. Psyched for the new one!
The score of this movie was simply amazing! I don't understand the hate the visual FX are insane! The simplest shots you're like how did they do that!!!
Movies come and go, friendships are much more important. Well played Jeremy. While everyone else was wasting their time watching some blue water movie, you were making your own lifelong memories.
My favorite Cameron film is Aliens, a masterpiece for the ages! Haven’t seen The way if water yet but I doubt it’ll top it. Great to see Sigourney Weaver in yet another Cameron movie 😊

So fun fact: They DID release the other hobbit movies in HFR as well. I went and saw Desolation of Smaug in 3D 48 FPS, and honestly it was the best 3D I've ever seen. I think the faster frames really helps with 3D, and it makes me excited to see this one!!
