“You’re out of line!” Everyone in the room proceeds to agree he’s right but won’t say it to his face

This is about as close as Ed Mercer is likely to get to a genuine Picard moment. Sir Pat would have delivered the same point with a lot more gravitas and dignity but it's the same point. You either have principles or you don't.

But what's the principle? That we should impose our beliefs on cultures other than ours when we feel they're in the wrong?

@@johnm573 Well: female moclans wants to stay so. It appears like there is a debate inside moclan society if their values are worthy or just illogical traditions who makes more harm than good.

One of the better moments for Captain Mercer. There needs to be some universal set of rules that all must agree to regardless of cultural belief and not open to compromise

"What exactly are we defending?" Our families and our lives? It is a reality of being a living thing that those first two may at times prioritize above our ideals.

Other side of that coin is that you can justify alot of fuck up shit in the name of survival and security. 😉 For an example I point you to Ender's Game.

@@tescheurich then we have an mutual understanding and agreement. 🤝 😁 I've heard it said that morality should be handled moment to moment. Each decision being individually weighed based on its own unique circumstances. So like you said in certain situations survival will outweigh our strict adherence to our ideals. But based on the above understanding, I'd say the goal is to do our best to adhere to those ideals in most situations. Arguably the Union in this situation has not, and has been kicking the can down the road out of poltical convenience, with only just now being a time you could seriously argue that Union would be justified in choosing survival over its own ideals. Before the kaylon I'd say not.

@@TheWorthingSagabut before the kaylons there were the krill threat. If moclus and krill allied themselves against the union before the kaylons were in the picture, it would've been a disaster

@@profchaos91 you forgot 2 things: 1. The krill nation was genocidal and expansionist. The krill only allied with the Moclans because of the existential threat poised by the Kaylon. 2. The krill, while implied to be more powerful than the Union, were not an existential threat to the Union like the Kaylon were. The Krill were a threat to the SECURITY of the Union, not an existential one. The conflict with the Krill mostly amounted to border skirmishes and the occasional attempt at planetary genocide. The Krill would attempt to expand their borders at the expense of their neighbors, but it involved no diplomacy and the promised death of any non krill "squatters. Sure the Krill would be an existential threat to an individual species who did not have a powerful fleet like the moclans, but that was part of the point of the Union, to have allies. Having the Moclans in the Union made the alliance stronger, but the Union were not helpless. Hell during season 3 AND the Kaylon threat, the Union were able to send a fleet to the Capital world of the Krill and only suffered minimal losses and leave.
