according to convo between isaac and that one kaylon who had emotion, it commented tat isaac had "reached the same emotional conclusions it had" but through roundabout logic rather than direct emotion. Since emotions are kinda just thoughts..I guess they do technically have them. Just without all the hormones and other stuff that initiate the feelings we generally associate with emotions. I think data from star trek had a similiar thing.

Interesting thing is that throughout the series, Isaac kept saying his kind can't feel emotions, yet you could tell that the Kaylon leader definitely felt malice towards the humans, underneath his so-called "logic." That, in retrospect, showed Isaac could develop emotions of his own; in this case, compassion.

such a good point you got a feeling that the leader kind of enjoyed any moments they got to quite frankly hurt the crew in anyway they could(like for example throwing out a crew member out the airlock is something a mustache trulling cartoon villian would do. and even calling it "pushisment") and he seemed to just want to kill ty for the sake of it because he was upset he helped the crew resest.

As part of the Kaylon's backstory (even at this point - we actually got to see it in season 3) the Kaylon's builders gave the Kaylon the ability to experience pain - my thinking is that some level of emotion was needed for that pain stimulation to work, and thats why the Kaylon Prime here shows a subtle degree of hate towards entities that reminded him of the Builders.

The implication of it's even Wilder because of the fact that they purport themselves to be so non-emotional and logical, for him to do something that illogical in terms of like being offensively capable of protecting himself if anymore were to come in, Isaac was in the most violent and rageful way possible expressing that anger, it just so happens for a robot that's very calmly but very directly doing a non-100% lucrative move, ie shutting down the guns long enough to look the other guy in the eyes while you take his fucking head off

You may think that it had deeper meaning but in reality it’s because they tore the head off with practical effects and the head gun animations are all digital. It’s one thing for the Krill or the Moclans to act homicidal or superior due to religously fantaical or cultural upbringings instilled from birth, it’s a whole other thing when you are literally built and programmed to follow directives. And even then all 3 groups have a hard time seeing beyond their mentalities. Sentient or no, they do not process the same capacity to think or reason beyond logic. The fact that Isaac and Timmis were able to reach these conclusions at all is an achievement in and of itself. That is a near impossible hurdle for an artificial being to overcome when they were essentially brought off the factory line. Honestly, I’d be more upset with the Krill or Moclan than anyone else cause they actually are capable of thinking beyond logic

I think a more likely hypothesis is that the blue eyes where meant to instil a calming presence to the crew of the Orville just as it does in human viewers, and since the Kaylon wanted the crew to welcome Isaac and gain their trust, making him have Red quote on quote eyes which would be a visual que which would make the crew a little more on edge, making them less welcoming of him. this would make his betray more anticipated due to our cognative defeats as the Kaylon would put it and potentially put the plain in jeopardy. Also before any one argues the Kaylon would consider this as irrelevant, you must consider that they think logically, and since they have studied other organisms and if they beleaved that red eyes would make the crew more suspicious of them they would change the eye colour since their whole plain hinged on crews connection to the Isaac. But you can definitely respect a machine that chooses defiance for the sake of love, regardless of if it was a learned program or not. I never gave up on Isaac, even when he tossed the picture that Ty made him. I knew there was still love in there. And the fact that at the end they didn’t allow the Union to give him an off switch, it really shows how far humanity has come in treating AI with as much dignity as any other biological being.

I do wonder about Isaac and Prime here - they both seem to have some level of emotion, even though their arguments are all rooted in logic. Primary is closer to logical in some ways - other species will always represent a non-zero threat to the Kaylon, therefore exterminating them now when the Kaylon have an advantage is a logical decision. But it has assumption built in that are not wholly logical, like that they won't encounter an even more advanced species who'll object to galactic genocide and wipe out the Kaylon to preserve the rest.

@codyrodgers6426 I think it's pretty clear that the kaylons DO have emotions, it's just processed and understood in a different way. It's clear that primary has a certain disdain for biological lifeforms, not JUST because he has the memories of what his creators did to them. He seems to have genuine hate for them and when isaac pulls off primarys head he even throws out one last "insult" which is pretty petty for a "non-feeling" machine. I think Isaac's emotions are the exact same as human emotions he just refuses (possibly due to programing from the kaylon) to acknowledge them as such

He's been infected by humanity, for lack of a better term. He was constructed specifically to serve as an emissary to the Union, meaning he probably didn't spend that much time in his society. At this point in the show, Isaac's spent almost two years on the Orville and has formed relationships with the crew, especially Claire and her kids. He even starts malfunctioning when he breaks up with Claire, which indicates that he's definitely beginning to experience something like organic emotions. This actually became a plot point later in the season. In the two final episodes of the show, some time-travel shenanigans happen and Mercer doesn't wind up in command of the Orville. This means that Claire never joins the crew, so Isaac doesn't bond with her and her sons, which results in him completing his mission for the Kaylon and being deactivated now that his purpose is at an end. The Kaylon then use the intel he gathered to nearly annihilate the Union, so the surviving crew have to band together to fix things before they can scour the galaxy clean of organic life.

I think the key dialogue is: Primary: "Are you experiencing sympathy?" Isaac:"That is not possible for a Kaylon!" I think, Isaac lied to Primary here in order to protect Tye. And: "I will not allow them to harm you". actually prooves it, because if he hadn't any kind of sympathy like Primary he wouldn't have said that. Isaac studied organic lifeforms for hundreds of years (Think of the last episode in season 1!) and now he has more experience than anyone of his Species. Tragically, Primary summons that at the very end: "You will always be alone." Isaac knows it is true, because he is the only Kaylon who has overcome his racism now.

It's impossible for Ai to have emotions. Isaac is simply thinking logically, as he is the one who has the most data on biological life forms otuside of his own species. He has also been instructed by the Union to protect union officers and the crew of the ship. Isaac is simply following his orders. As to why he doesn't flip and follow Primary's as he sees the possibility for human / kaylon coexistence, and possibly saw that would be made impossible of a child was terminated. Thus Isaac's only known decision; rebellion. Also Primary was a unit created by Kaylon with only prior experience of their builders.
