Ironically this is Tolkien's definition of evil: it can't create anything new, so it corrupts the good and the beautiful instead. EDIT: Or rather St. Augustine's. Thanks for reminding me, guys.

I dont think anyone can seriously claim that Sam and Frodo were intended to be gay. Tolkien was living in a time when homosexuality was illegal in Britain and there is nothing to indicate he had a problem with that per se. He was strongly Catholic and at the time they considered homosexuality a sin. So, no, even though I like seeing gay romances (GOOD gay romances like Aristotle and Dante or the book version of Love Simon), I would never say that Tolkien *intended* to write Frodo and Sam as gay. That is simply silly and since he has passed we wouldnt know for sure anyway, which means we cant make any definite claims. There are just too many fujoshis who cant restrict their dirty thoughts to boys love stuff.

Well let's look at the text shall we? ""(The Quendi) were a race high and beautiful, The People of the Great Journey, The People of the Stars. They were tall ,fair of skin , and grey-eyed , though their locks were dark , save in the Golden House of Finarfin; and their voices had more melodies than any mortal voice that is now heard." Lotr appendices Need more? ""They took off their masks now and again to cool them, as the day-heat grew, and Frodo saw that they were goodly men, pale-skinned, dark of hair, with grey eyes and faces sad and proud. They spoke together in soft voices, at first using the Common Speech... and then changing to another language of their own. " Lotr, Two Towers, Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit And mark that the Elves and Dunedain (meaning Men of the West, Numenoreans) were said by Tolkien to resemble each other: "[The Númenóreans] became thus in appearance, and even in powers of mind, hardly distinguishable from the Elves - but they remained mortal, even though rewarded by a triple, or more than a triple, span of years." (Letters, p. 154) And since the Second Age is very much focusing on the history of Elves and Numenoreans then those peoples are fairly established how they looked like, they ARE in other words WHITE, quasi-European like in appearance. The Numenoreans the inhabitants of the Atlantis-like civilization on an island in the middle of the Great Sea Belegaer (which is de facto Atlantic) were in origin mix of germanic/celtic/norse like tribes of ancient northern people of Edain of the First Age Beleriand who all looked like that: "And in those days the strength of Men was added to the power of the Noldor, and their hope was high; and Morgoth was straitly enclosed, for the people of Hador, being hardy to endure cold and long wandering, feared sot at times to go far into the north and there keep watch upon the movements of the Enemy. The Men of the Three Houses throve and multiplied, but greatest among them was the house of Hador Goldenhead, peer of Elven-lords. His people were of great strength and stature, ready in mind, bold and steadfast, quick to anger and to laughter, mighty among the Children of Ilúvatar in the youth of Mankind. Yellow-haired they were for the most part, and blue-eyed; but not so was Túrin, whose mother was Morwen of the house of Bëor. The Men of that house were dark or brown of hair, with grey eyes; and of all Men they were most like to the Noldor and most loved by them; for they were eager of mind, cunning-handed, swift in understanding, long in memory, and they were moved sooner to pity than to laughter. Like to them were the woodland folk of Haleth, but they were of lesser stature, and less eager for lore. They used few words, and did not love great concourse of men; and many among them delighted in solitude, wandering free in the greenwoods while the wonder of the lands of the Eldar was new upon them." But we need to scour all the texts, even those only set in the Second Age contain enough information about physical appearance of various peoples: "The news spread swiftly and Men in Eriador were filled with wonder. Although in the First Age they had dwelt in the East, rumours of the terrible war 'beyond the Western Mountains' [i.e. Ered Luin] had reached them; but their traditions preserved no clear account of it, and they believed that all the Men who dwelt in the lands beyond had been destroyed or drowned in great tumults of fire and inrushing seas. But since it was still said among them that those Men had in years beyond memory been kinsmen of their own, they sent messages to Gil-galad asking leave to meet the shipmen 'who had returned from death in the deeps of the Sea.' Thus it came about that there was a meeting between them on the Tower Hills; and to that meeting with the Númenóreans came twelve Men only out of Eriador, Men of high heart and courage, for most of their people feared that the newcomers were perilous spirits of the Dead. But when they looked on the shipmen fear left them, though for a while they stood silent in awe; for mighty as they were themselves accounted among their kin, the shipmen resembled rather Elvish lords than mortal Men in bearing and apparel. Nonetheless they felt no doubt of their ancient kinship; and likewise the shipmen looked with glad surprise upon the Men of Middle-earth, for it had been believed in Númenor that the Men left behind were descended from the evil Men who in the last days of the war against Morgoth had been summoned by him out of the East. But now they looked upon faces free from the Shadow and Men who could have walked in Númenor and not been thought aliens save in their clothes and their arms. Then suddenly, after the silence, both the Númenóreans and the Men of Eriador spoke words of welcome and greeting in their own tongues, as if addressing friends and kinsmen after a long parting. At first they were disappointed, for neither side could understand the other; but when they mingled in friendship they found that they shared very many words still clearly recognisable, and others that could be understood with attention, and they were able to converse haltingly about simple matters." Elsewhere in this essay it is explained that these Men dwelt about Lake Evendim, in the North Downs and the Weather Hills, and in the lands between as far as the Brandywine, west of which they often wandered though they did not dwell there. They were friendly with the Elves, though they held them in awe; and they feared the Sea and would not look upon it. It appears that they were in origin Men of the same stock as the Peoples of Bëor and Hador who had not crossed the Blue Mountains into Beleriand during the First Age." ... "Aldarion, for so he is called in all tales, grew swiftly to a man of great stature, strong and vigorous in mind and body, golden-haired as his mother, ready to mirth and generous, but prouder than his father and ever more bent on his own will."/"Then her heart was shaken; for the blue eyes of Aldarion seemed to her now grey and cold, yet she perceived as it were a hunger in his gaze." ... "There Almarian the Queen observed her beauty, of a kind seldom seen in Númenor; for Beregar came of the House of Bëor by ancient descent, though not of the royal line of Elros, and Erendis was dark-haired and of slender grace, with the clear grey eyes of her kin."/"Riding one day in the forests of the Westlands he saw a woman, whose dark hair flowed in the wind, and about her was a green cloak clasped at the throat with a bright jewel; and he took her for one of the Eldar, who came at times to those parts of the Island. But she approached, and he knew her for Erendis, and saw that the jewel was the one that he had given her; then suddenly he knew in himself the love that he bore her, and he felt the emptiness of his days. Erendis seeing him turned pale and would ride off, but he was too quick, and he said: "Too well have I deserved that you should flee from me, who have fled so often and so far! But forgive me, and stay now." The Unfinished Tales, Mariner's Wife, Tale of Aldarion and Erendis

To be blunt, Tolkien would hate the woke culture entirely. Even if it lined up with his views, he absolutely HATED making direct comparisons in the LotR. That was one of the biggest things he and Lewis would often argue about. Lewis was quite literal in his direct comparisons in the chronicles of Narnia. Tolkien would never write like that. If there was any then it would be buried deep and not obvious. He would never stoop to such stupidity as to write "oh here we have a black rep, and this person is a gay rep, oh and this one is...". Every character he created was created for a purpose within the story itself. There was no "oh this character is this to appeal to this particular group of irl people". But hey, the woke mob can't create anything on their own, all they know how to do is infect already great things.

@@nathanjora7627 True. But, while Gandalf is directly talking here about white light being seprated into the different colours that it is made of, in the subtext it talks about tearing apart a culture through the cynical eye of deconstruction. It's about the dismantling of the western culture - which began in its earnest in the 19th century if not even earlier - through the critical theory. Once a culture no longer believes in its own ideas but turns to take them apart "to find out what they're made of", those ideas, and the culture, are good for nothing. You either genuinely believe in things like truth, objectivity, honesty, loyalty and justice, or you don't. Turning inwards to deconstruct a concept like truth to figure out how it's a made up idea used to protect the power of the patriarchy leaves you in folly. Tolkien often talked about this - the importance of actually genuinely believing in things, especially when it comes to the stories and narratives a society tells to keep itself going. In that sense of course, his stories are entirely made up as far as the actual plot goes and cannot and shouldn't be believed literally - but the moral truth within them is meant to be *real* . There's no room for cynicism there. The virtues of the characters are true, not something they foolishly imagine to be true, or pretend to be true.

Nah, don't feel old - I didn't realise Ian Charleson (the guy who played Eric Liddell - the Scottish runner - in Chariots of Fire) was gay either but, like you said, I didn't give one because he was a great actor. Top Trivia note: (I only found today) Sir Ian McKellan said that Charleson played Hamlet so well that it was as if though he rehearsed it the whole of his life. That's how good an actor Ian Charleson was.

"... is the same trash that said Ian McKellen was the worst affront to ...." That's nothing less than a lie. pure and simple. I was deep into the Tolkien fandom at the time the movies were released. I have been a Tolkien fan for probably longer than the author of that post has been alive. I had even strong-armed the direction of my high-school at the time to provide me with a local and furnitures to create a Tolkien research club, which several of my teachers joined (and that club might still be alive to this day, more than 20 years later). NO ONE in the fandom, or outside of it as far as I'm aware, had any issue with the casting of Sir McKellen (it's SIR for you, whelp) as Gandalf. NOT.A.SINGLE.PERSON.

Funnily enough the fairly recent Witcher adaptation by netflix has black elf evne though Witcher written by Sapkowski is very Tolkien-esque when it comes to elder races elves, dwarves etc. in the witcher elves known also as Aen Seidhe are very celtic, and of course what the netflix adaptation did? Why add a black actor playing an elf orphan boy Dara (which was never in source material mind you), which is doubly hilarious considering that there were other elves played by white men (including a character known as Filavandrel from an old elven noble family, he was played by white actor, but this creates hilarious implication, does this elf-boy (named unimaginatively I might add) fit? Of course not is there only for those diversity checkmarks. I expect Amazon's lotr tv show may reach the same level.

I have *never* heard anyone complaining about the casting of Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf because of his sexual orientation. Hell, I've *never* heard anyone complaining about his casting as Gandalf, *period.* The only time I ever really heard anything about any possible homosexuality brought up was in relation to Frodo and Sam, and Legolas and Gimli, and very rarely was that mentioned in any way that this DotNet group would objectionable, I'd imagine, since it was teenage girls shipping because two guys aren't allowed to have deep, personal friendships anymore without someone else thinking at least one of them is taking it up the butt. The worst things I ever heard about the casting was Wood as Frodo, because he never quite captured the book version's actual toughness and bravery.

You know not all shippers ship because they "think two guys can't be friends." Some of us, actually a lot of us, see two guys have a close friendship, acknowledge that it is, indeed a close friendship, and then decide we want to see what it would look like as a romance instead. Just because there's an increasingly loud minority of woke idiots who actually fit the stereotype of thinking two guys even so much as looking at each other must mean they're gay in a miss guided search for "Representation" have been screeching about this or that pair of male friends being "canon gay" on twitter doesn't mean that's what shipping is always like. Also some of us are only here because we think they or their actors look hot together.
