This is an excellent point. Instead of blackwashing culturally European stories, introduce us all to culturally minority characters espousing and embracing their own history. Show me an African wizard battle, with great shamans warring it out. Show me a bustling Aztec city and a warrior's game. Show me characters that are rooted in their own culture, not characters that would be culturally white but just aren't.

As a POC hearing people say "blackwashing doesn't exist" or blackwashing is good because black people endured many hardships" just makes me rlly uncomfortable. These are the same people who see the representation of black people in anime (Mirko, Nessa, Rock Lock, Darui, Onyankopon, Killer Bee, etc.) and instead of being happy that representation is being brought to anime, they change existing characters such as Deku and Anya to be black or dark skinned when they're already getting represented through other characters. I don’t agree with washing but making a drawing of deku as a black guy with a fro isn’t that bad😂 or disrespecting the author. Deku is ultimately Japanese we all know this, so if someone wants to create what black version looks like, it’s just art and a form of self expression. Also I agree with representation because I grew up at a time where kids of colour around me thought you had to be white to do anything purely based on the reason that everything they consumed was just white people and then the occasional person of colour. So the only reason I think representation is fine is for kids.

As an Asian, I get extremely annoyed and pissed off when they change the characters from games or anime that ARE Asian, black. It's just fucking rude, to the artist, to the people who the character represents, the people who resonate with that character, and to the people who love the character. Let me tell you now, if you change the race of a character, no matter what! You WILL ALWAYS be the asshole if an argument about this topic is brought up. Also, turning a white character black, yeah.. In the name of “inclusion,” they’re grouping all cultures into either “black” or “white,” effectively erasing them. You can argue that black people are the original colonisers, however, as it was Homo Sapiens who left Africa via the middle east and Turkey and out-competed the original europeans - Neanderthals - which eventually led to their extinction. Yes it was hundreds of thousands of years ago, and European imperialist nations did then return in the scramble for Africa, but both are historical colonial events only seperated by time and intent (we can only guess as to why the original HS group left Africa).

yAH.... and someone should tell this woman that in Nigerian movies, 99% of representation is black. In India, 99% of the representation is Indian In South Korea, or any Asian country, 99% a representation is Korean or Asian. In Spain 99% of the representation is spanish. In every country where the majority is one skin color, their media represents that. Almost 60% of the USA population is white. Black is 12.4 and Hispanic is 18.7. Asian is 6%. There are many white people and other ethnicities living in China and Asian countries however they are still not the majority represented on screen because they are simply not the majority. It is what it is. I never understood why people want to take characters that are already a color and swap them instead of just making new characters and fighting for that. It comes off very insulting to poc as if they are only good enough for already established characters to be handed down to them

I remember watching a video where a group of college students got together to have a POC only meeting about racism, a safe space where people could talk about their experiences dealing with racism without the judgmental eyes of white people fouling it up. The woman that was running the event, who is black, hands the talking stick to an Asian woman who goes on to describe a terrifying encounter between her, her friend, and a man in a car. He had driven up to them on the street and started cat-calling them. When they refused to get in his car he started screaming racial slurs at them. During all of the story up to this point everyone in attendance are nodding and encouraging her. All the way up to the point where she says " We were very scared because he was a very large black man" That was when the woman running the event dashed forward and snatched the talking stick from her and told her that her story was inappropriate because it wasn't an example of racism. It was just an example of a bad man. You see, she told the girl "black people CAN'T BE RACIST". She explains the the girl that even if a black person uses racial slurs it's not racist, only white people can be racist. You could tell by the look on the Asian girls face that she wasn't buying the double-think.

They'd say "I made him a black person!" and when us Asians take notice and say something, they say "Asians can be black, too, blasians exist!" Well I know they do but you just said you turned them into a black person, not a blasian. The thing is, in some people's quest to be represented, they end up walking all over other POCs and they seem to not even care if we feel the same way they do when the race of the character is changed. I'll be honest, it's kinda made me want to do the same to them again, turn black characters Asian, but two wrongs don't make a right, and doing it would make me a hypocrite, too.

Also just wanted to edit and add that I wasnt trying to convince people it was kinda- yeah I was more over asking if my feelings were valid. A person said yeah it was normal- but then 2-3 people came it basically questioning me why I thought that ;-; it was very intense and I was kinda scared to answer or ask any questions... I just couldnt give more of an explanation of why i felt uncomfortable with people making asian characters black or “blasian”. I just… didnt like it-

Looking at the basis for all this activism, it's more like coexistence of representative characters still admits (in their minds) that they are in a hegemonic battle that they have a late start in and risk non-competitiveness, and using guilt and carefully worded requests for acquiescence is a much simpler and potentially more effective tribalistic approach to "... duty to fight, duty to win..." Even the 'build back better' slogan attached to this activism requires anything currently standing and/or functional to be demolished first.

And what pisses me off is the fact that people will literally do this to other minority characters. The things I've seen people on Twitter do makes me tear my hair out. I literally told people 'That person with a light skin tone you're blackwashing is not white, they're Asian'. Now don't get me wrong, blackwashing to begin with is completely wrong, but it stings more as an Asian person who grew up in the West. I needed representation too, but I never asianwashed. And what gets me the most is that there are some badass black characters in anime and manga. They could literally be celebrating anime like Afro Samurai and Michiko and Hatchin, but no, they have to take MHA characters who aren't black and turn them black... despite MHA having black characters. It makes me lose faith in humanity.

But now it often just looks like laziness, or “toxic revenge” covered with “let’s spread love and representation” (again, all while just repainting a character black). I think what many people don't see is that blackwashing is a way to further discriminate against POC. The money for royalties still foes to white people if white content gets blackwashed. The massive companies standing behind race swaps are still mostly white. If you regurgitate old content that is white coded and just race swap it, you're not doing proper representation, you're creating modern blackface. Just that there's not a white actor painting themselves black to misrepresent POC, you abuse those POC actors to misrepresent themselves. And that way they can avoid paying black creators for their original contexts. How is that representation? Why are people of colour alright with being continuously made invisible where it counts, and being appeased by creators giving lip service?

Richie, the white kid. Why? Because he was a geek who got excited about technology. Gear's super intelligence was way more enticing to me than Static's electro-magnetism. You know what I find so stupid about modern America? Most people don't even know what the definition of racism even is. They think they do, but they don't. Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized. Key word: typically, which just means that's the usual case (or the only one people care to talk about) Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people based on their race. So whitewashing a character is racist because you're disrespecting the original creator by completely altering the described or widely accepted appearance of their character, you're only doing it because you don't like the character's original skin color. However, blackwashing is the exact same, but you don't see it as racism because you don't understand what racism is. You think blackwashing is okay because the media in the past portrayed black people in a negative light due to racism against black people in the past, but why is it that your race was discriminated against for so long but instead of trying to achieve equality you want to reverse that racism and make white people suffer the same discrimination your race used to suffer? That's just revenge, revenge against people based purely on their race, on something their ancestors did. Or maybe the excuse is that white people used to oppress black people? Yet, that's reversed as well... You may not believe it, but if a white person says literally anything about black people it's immediately deemed as racist, their name and reputation is dragged through the mud and they might as well have signed their death warrant.

Bollywood doesn't even include people of India who are not from the hindi speaking belt , they don't have white, east asian or black people , but priyanka Chopra who wouldn't fight for inclusion on bollywood cones to america and preaches inclusion of indians. There are flourishing movie industries all over the world that do not represent anyone other than their own majority . JOHNSON, who I don't think is even in the show.

Fellow artist here. It's aggravating enough that they steal other people's work to "fix" it, but they often do it with great conceit. As if they're a superior being and the rest of us are filth beneath their shoes. And why would they make their own thing? It would take too much time and effort to get that thing to the same level of popularity as already-existing things (that's IF they were done well, but we all know they wouldn't be) never mind the fact that these sort of people lack the creativity, skill (for most), and motivation to do so. No, it's much easier to just take someone else's work and "fix" it to meet their blatantly bigoted double standards. It's just brazen theft, and they know they'll get away with it by calling their accusers things that they aren't (because they learned, as toddlers, to get what they want by throwing tantrums and lies).

You must acknowledge though that a lot of fantasy writing, regardless of authors ethnicity, tends to have very heavy racism overtones and political caste system turmoils be a forefront of their worlds. (e.g. Elves in pretty much any interpretation, they're either "superior" and super racist themselves or are the complete opposite [especially in more modern fantasy] and are seen as subhuman; Dwarves in _most_ fantasy tend to be very caste system based and more oft than not stories involving their congregations are turmoil surrounding such system, etc.) Difference is when it's well written and done properly these factors simply build the world and are not the all-encompassing story -- say having an Elf and a Dwarf have subtle interactions that nigh silently tell a deeper story while doing so in a jovial and brotherly memorable way: not like any writer could ever do that though, *_right?_* Tolkien-who?

Exactly. Having a good story is important for audiences to be able to find any character compelling. Luke Skywalker is not a compelling character because he looks like me. He's a compelling character because we see him grow from an angsty farmboy to a mature and wise Jedi Knight who was able to bring his father back from the dark side and we see the struggles he has to go through to get there. When writers obsess over race, they tend to make their characters little more than cardboard cutouts that no one can relate to.

Also, I'm a white person, and a characters race means nothing when it comes to me relating to said character. The only time race is really a barrier when it comes to relating to a character is usually when a story is about racism. When it is original, the artist can add in cultural clothes, different personalities, etc. Stealing a character’s race and changing them into poc is not representation. It is just changing someone’s race. Thats it. They aren’t putting in the work to actually think of a design for a black individual. They aren’t thinking of unique characteristics of the black character at all. People who do this don’t actually care about wanting to add more black people, instead they just want the bad kind of attention and want to make themselves feel like heroes.

“Instead of changing a character’s race, make a new one that’s interesting and well-written like Miles Morales for example.” Nooo, they can’t do that. That requires effort and putting work in, and people don’t like doing work, that’s hard. Writing isn’t supposed to be hard, writing’s supposed to be easy. That’s why the LOTR trilogy are some of the best stories of all time, ‘cause those were really easy to write. The complexities of Aragorn’s backstory and how it relates to the lore of the rest of the world, probably only took 5 minutes.

Heck a show similar to supernatural but set with a gruff stereotypical veteran cop born and raised in Africa and a wide eyed newbie on a joint training of some kind from Europe or America would be a good idea. You would get a stark contrast as the veteran cop has dealt with the supernatural of African myths and folklore while the newbie has not. And unlike vampires or other European myths has absolutely no grounding to help them deal with the idea these things would be real. It would have potential to tell a truly interesting story and get people interested. I remember when I first saw the Wendigo in Supernatural. It surprised me as I had never heard of one so I looked into it and found it fascinating and helped start my interest in some of the creepier Native American myths.

I remember several books about Inca myth being made and none of those books sold well. Despite the readers actually liking the story. Same thing with black sands. A collection of books based around African myth but no one buys them. It’s sad really, people only care about European stuff and Japanese stuff because of anime.

I think as an Asian, it's especially hard to speak up about racebending and blackwashing and whitewashing. I see Asian characters blackwashed all the time, and see Black characters being whitewashed too, and both make me equally as uncomfortable! Racebending should not be seen as good one way but bad the other, it's hypocritical. I wish people put that energy into creating new original POC characters, rather than taking away something from an already existing character that makes them them. You made a great video on the matter, saying what needs to be said and using your platform to share it! I appreciate you speaking up when others aren't able to or are too afraid to! "are you seriously blaming me for poc media not being popular? go watch it yourself" when its like no im not blaming them? but if theyre not watching the media while simultaneously saying stuff like "poc media needs to be more popular!!" and doing things like racebending characters and NOT watching the media, then yeah im gonna blame them 💀 they want poc media to be popular but then not even watch it themselves

My opinion is that blackwashing comes off as lazy and insincere. As you mentioned, they'd rather change one trait about an existing character instead of actually coming up with their own unique characters. It feels like they have a mental checklist of things that "come off as diversity/representation" or in short, pretending to care. Also, for people who talk against racism a lot, they seem to care way too much about race than those they berate. It may just be me thinking this, though.

In short we really shouldn't change other people's work. We can't just change the Mona Lisa to Johnny Depp and just say "it's better this way". The Mona Lisa is the Mona Lisa, Beastboy is Beastboy and no one else because any change makes them a completely different and separate character. A cat is a cat until you make it purple, then it's whatever the hell you just made it.

All those teen movies where the geek girl gets a "make over" to become the beautiful stunner...all by simply removing her glasses. Did it make me cry? Did it make me rage? Did it make me want to break my glasses? No. Because I didn't let fiction define me. I didn't need to see myself, nor did I hitch my self-esteem to the "representation" that was provided.

When Black Panther came out in South Africa, people dressed up in their traditional wear to go watch the movie. This, in a country where traditional wear isn't really just a thing that people wear nonchalantly. It was a good example of how having characters that look like you matter. That being said, I'd rather have new characters than blackwashed characters. That way you can design characters with actual nuance rather than having them be this generic mould where their physical design actually means nothing.

the argument is that they're fictional characters not defied by any race/gender/sexuality the core of the character is still there. Race swapping historical people or characters who are defined by their race is what we should be upset over. Examples: Superman isn't defied by his race he's an alien. Ariel is a mermaid not a real life species she's only identified as white by others not defined by being white since no attention was brought to her skin color in the story. Tim Drake isn't defined by his race and has been hinted at for years that he was bi. Historical real people are based on well real people so they should be properly represented. They aged up Pocahontas and sexualized her when in real life she was 12 and human trafficked. Snow White is defined by her skin colour since it's in the fairytale "her skin was white as snow." Black Panther is another exception because of the character heavily is defined by his race/culture.

Homophobes tend to assume that character is straight by default, especially if they had straight relationship. So when authors/shippers show gay content with character they go inrage and say that "eww stop this he's hetero" and vice versa with gay into a straight, people assume character is gay when they had like one gay relationship. Dont manipulate others messages in their art to prove yours, its unoriginal and ignorant. Create new characters that dont make the color of their skin or sexuality their whole story or personality. Popo isn't based off of black people. He's based off of Asian depictions of the Buddha which have jet black skin. It's considered a divine blessing. For example, many Japanese people viewed Yasuke as some kind of man blessed by the Buddha due to his dark skin. The problem with a lot of Social Justice takes on non-western culture is that they ironically apply their own cultural biases to a foreign culture they don't understand, and ignore the voices of those people when they speak up. See also; casting ScarJo as Motoko in Ghost in the Shell and the reaction to that versus how it was perceived by the creator himself and Asian people broadly.
