X Men '97 Is Woke AF

Ойын-сауық

Did you know that the X-Men were always woke? You did? Yeah, so did I. But some people with terrible hot takes and grifting agendas apparently didn't. So I'm here to school those fools on some X-Men history!
**BTW - CORRECTION: It was Len Wein who wrote GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1. Not Chris Claremont. But the premise of my argument still stands. Wein and Claremont leaned into the the diversity, allegory and symbolism going forward with the new title.**

Literally 😂, but Mfers gotta be edgelords and shout from the rooftops how much they hate something but behind closed doors they engage in the very thing they claim to be against 😒...people will say and do anything for clicks, likes or whatever pathetic self validating excuse they can conceive. We got a rapist who tried to destroy the country on January 6th running president who is advocating for violence against fellow Americans if he loses,a war in Ukraine, multiple economic crisis and this mfer is mad about a fictional cartoon 😂...people never cease to amaze me 😂

I owned X Men giant sized #1 IN 1975 (damn that house fire). My mother brought it home from work one evening. She'd loved comics since she was a little girl and encouraged them for me. I always got a new run each month but the X Men were different they spoke to me as an African American and a misfit in this world. For anyone to say that Woke wasn't there is asinine. At 8 years old I saw "I have a dream and By any means necessary" in every issue. I believe with most contemporaries today, their ignorance is due to the of lack of experiences. When Chris Claremont revived the X-Men in the 1970s, he brought a lot more depth to the characters, and Magneto emerged as far more of a sympathetic anti-hero. But this is also the first time we get the backstory of Magneto as a holocaust survivor; Claremont himself is Jewish, and lived for a short time in a Kibbutz in Israel, and the analogies he's drawn in interviews isn't to Malcom X, but to Irgun and other militant Zionists in Israeli history.

I honestly hate the word WOKE. A misappropriated use of language. I guess it is the stolen word these days to describe a difference in culture or societal status that does not conform to what is considered the norm. I have always been a huge fan of the Xmen and the series because it shows us how hard it is to be different and the struggle that come with it. I am sure it had something to do with Beau DeMayo letting go. I read an article that stated he was too Homoerotic. Whatever that means ? Still can't wait for the show tomorrow.

People weaponizing religion against "others" and people hating others is as old as humanity. So to have those elements in X-Men stories isn't strange. What people are really complaing about is the change to characters and those changes being made specifically to check some boxes. Or to manufacture a plot to try and make it seem like certain actions are acceptable, justifiable, or even righteous and honorable. The X-Men weren't even consistently feared or hated in the beginning. They were just a superhero team battling supervillains. And that B story from issue 1 wasn't in the original issue. That was a later reprint where they started adding those origin stories in. What the comics have become more of today, are stories where agenda comes first and the story often suffers for it and so does characterization. Where the X-Men once were in a place where anyone could see themselves as pretty much everyone has felt out if place at one time or another, it is now more and more specifically allegorical. And now giving a nod of approval to harm and destruction where before it was "yes, they hate and fear us, but we will protect them still for we are all mankind." And, really, if we're taking place in the 90's still, why is this non-binary and they/them terminology showing up? I never liked Morph (his voice and laugh grated on me) but he was called he. So that was a change that was ridiculous and the kind of thing Stan Lee was not fond of. Don't change established characters like that. All that being said. I liked the first couple episodes. And I like moments from most the other episodes. But the way time seems to just skip ahead superfast is throwing me off and so much of the events of the show would have landed better with a bit more patience.

I'm going to push back a little. X-Men didn't start off just fighting supervillains. The fear and hatred of mutants pretty much showed up once the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants appeared. Evil was in their name and the X-Men, well they were the good ones. Sound familiar? Now Morph may have been called he originally, and in the 90s we might not have had respectful non-binary terminology, that doesn't mean folks didn't feel what non-binary signifies. We know they did, they just didn't have the words for it then. But if you noticed in the show (which is awesome btw, both by critics and audiences - 98% critics/94% audience on Rotten Tomatoes) they don't stress the use of "they/them" at all. It was said quickly only once. If you had never heard in the news how the character was being written, you would have never picked up on it. But because folks were primed for it, then folks noticed it. Otherwise, it would've gone over our heads. Again, I'll reiterate my argument: Saying a shapeshifter is non-binary while they spend most of their downtime in an androgynous form, it's not a stretch. That's all I was saying.

Good take. Even if the X-Men weren't created to be what they have become, they have evolved into that. The problem is, and I think one reason things are so divisive nowadays, people don't like being lectured at. Even if I agree with the "lesson", if it is being hammered in I just don't want to listen anymore. Back in the day the X-Men weren't talking about race as in black and white, they were talking about mutant and human and it worked within the story and so it was "subtle" (it wasn't really subtle, but still). Now they not only talk about mutant and human, they bring in the real life ideas of race, gender, and the alphabet groups. That is in the news all the time. It is in schools. It is EVERYWHERE. People read comics/watch tv/movies to escape reality. I want the X-Men to be about social issues, but done in the way they used to do it. I don't want to hear about alphabet peoples. I don't want them talking about black or white. I want them to lead by example. Black Storm with White Wolverine being in love in the AoA arch for example. They didn't bring up black and white.. they loved each other and that was great. Making preexisting characters gay like they did with Iceman.. I mean, there are a ton of old stories showing his thought bubbles and how he was attracted to girls! Retconning him to be gay.. why? What purpose does that have? New students joining the school is a normal thing. They did it in New X-Men. Give us those gay characters that way, don't retcon and ruin fan favorites. Writers are being far too lazy nowadays, OR they truly are just trying to push an agenda and people are just tired of that. I hope that Disney/Marvel/MCU do the X-Men right though. I want them to have the popularity and fame they did back in the 90s. We'll see.
