With the release of their self-titled debut, The Ocean Blue quickly achieved widespread acclaim and radio & MTV airplay with top 10 Modern Rock/College Radio hits like "Between Something and Nothing", "Drifting, Falling", and "Vanity Fair". Followed by Cerulean, Beneath the Rhythm and Sound , and See The Ocean Blue, the band's fanbase grew with each release.
The band continued to several records, including 2000's Davy Jones Locker and 2004's Waterworks. In 2013, the band released their first full length record in a decade, Ultramarine, on Korda Records. In 2015, the band worked with Sire Records to reissue their first three albums on vinyl, and toured North America and South America, where some of their most passionate fans reside.
In 2019, the band returned with the beautifully powerful Kings and Queens / Knaves and Thieves, and has continued to tour for this release and the newly re-issued vinyl of See The Ocean Blue (2022) and Davy Jones Locker (2023).

Just saw the Ocean Blue last night at the Casbah in SD, after being a fan since the 1st LP in 1989 it was my first time seeing them ( sadly ) but I have to say it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. 20 songs, no break, and true professionalism from start to end, absolutely blew my mind!

Best band I ever worked for, miss you guys
Her world came crashing down And all that it contained A million pieces of dreams Coming apart at the seams But she twists and she whirls Dismissing it aa away, Wasn't quite the same as it was Yesterday Her night begins the day Why think when we can play "I find it so hard to find, A certain dress of that kind" As she twists and she whirls And she dances it all away, The problems persist, they won't Go away She twists and she whirls Dancing it all away, Would rather see the night Than the reason of the day I find it so hard to find Any reason to this kind

We met The Innocence Mission a few times in NY way back when, super nice folks. I saw them play about five times, all told. I still have a huge signed (by Don and Karen) poster they signed for me backstage at some WLIR FM special concert at Mulcahy's Wantagh, I think it was the Umbrella tour, they opened for Alison Moyet among others. We also hung out with the Judybats before and after the same show, another fine band. We even caught Innocence Mission at the long-gone bar Woody's in NYC, owned by Ron Wood for a time.

Ocean Blue always came out and spoke with their fans...I remember them playing pool at a club in Providence right before their gig and just hanging out, and another time at a free concert in Boston they were standing behind us as John Wesley Harding was warming up for them and when he finished i turned to them and said “okay, go play” and they started cracking up.

I had a similar experience in the early 90's when the Replacements opened for Elvis Costello. The Replacements were incredible...I asked my GF, now wife, if we could leave about three songs into Elvis.
Easiest front of house mixing gigs I ever worked. These guys could do this stuff w/no sound check.
World came crashing down when this does not get played on the radio. Classic song from a classic album & band.
It doesn't get much better than this.
I have friends that know them very well. They are still around but not in original form...I remember seeing them on a rainy sat. afternoon at Lebanon Valley College. The best rainy day I ever had.
first time I heard this song was back in 1993.....a friend let me borrow the Cerulean cassette and blew me away! Now I listen to it on vinyl and it sounds superb!
I first heard this song when I was 15. I'm 47 now. "She'd rather see the night than the reason of the day" is a quote that's tattooed in my soul right up there with "there never was a world for her but the one she sang, and singing, made".
This video such a time capsule. The keyboard player bouncing to the music, and there in the corner for absolutely no reason, the guy standing in the squares of light. I half expect to see Kennedy from MTV to introduce this.
an underrated band, album and song... I love the nostalgic melody and sad lyric
I remember hearing this band in the late 80's early 90's on alternative rock radio, never knew who they were until I stumbled on to them recently, luv' their music.
Back when music had dynamics and space. Been a fan since the first album came out when I was 14. In my top 10 favorite bands ever.

I remember how my local radio station would play their songs so rarely. They got minimal AirPlay at least around where I lived...And you know what...That's exactly how I liked it.....when you least expected it....out of blue...the radio station would play one their many amazing songs... Always taking my mind to a different place....Far Far Away.
this song gives me some nostalgia. Those good memories of a fresh warm morning and a summer evening staring at the sunset... losing all sense of time... a feeling, hard to describe...
For you, CH/CT...I hope to see you again in a beautiful place that looks and feels like the way this band (particularly this album) sounds, where problems never persist and won't go away.
I miss everything about the 80’s...my youth, the styles but mostly the music. What a great era to grow up in and what an amazing decade of music. Maybe I’m biased having grown up then but I really doubt there’ll ever be one as great.

My fave song of the 1990's and one of my most fave artists ever. Saw them in 1993 at the Paradise in Boston. The show was superb - it was like going to a symphony, there was no ego, BS, etc - they just performed their music brilliantly the entire time. So pure, simple, yet sophisticated. They're still together with David leading but major personnel changes since they went indy, still waiting on a new album.
The Ballerina is so beautiful
This song takes me back to 1989, 1990; and I’m wondering at the age of 16 what is to be of my life? thinking about ‘a love’ that doesn’t really exist. 35 years later two homes, three kids, a lifelong career. I’m still wondering the same thing. It’s amazing how a song can you bring so many horrific memories but yet beautiful thoughts as well… why is that?

Real musicians, real instruments, no auto tune, total honesty.
@pechondelgado
3 жыл бұрын
I see comments like this all the time from people older than 40. Auto tune is a technique used in hip hop and pop music and really not relevant to music discussions about rock bands. There's thousands of bands playing some sub genre of rock these days who would never use auto tune and think it's disgusting. I understand you're point is that music has evolved to become phoned in and altered in the studio in some way. Remember though, at the time this band existed there were just as many pop groups with dance beats who used heavy editing on vocals, etc . The only difference is what's become popular in the mainstream and what you see getting shoved down your throat. Aside from that, there has still been some pretty great indie records released in the last 10 years but you gotta actually go look for it.

I guess I could pull my mp3 of it into Sonar and see, but my guess is what @Larry Salzman was indicating was the heart of this recording being done by actual musicians rather than mainly in production. Since this was right on the cusp it'd be interesting to see.

One of the most underated bands of the 90's. Drifting, Falling is one of my favorite songs ever.

In reply to the last few posts: They are from Hershey, their first album was in the 80's, but their big break out, Cerulean, which contains this song, is from the 90's, as their other major label albums. Actually, in the early 90's they were quite popular in the US, at least on the east coast. They were featured on MTV quite a bit, and I saw them at a major music festival in 92 or 93. They did a killer ep in the early 00's, and promise a follow up still. Frankly, I think they are still great.
