The NEW Harvestright Freeze Dryer Oil Filter!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Harvestright answered our wishes! They were kind enough to send their new oil filter system for me to share with the freeze drying community. This is a big step up from the old Harvey style filter that we have all had experience with. This is Harvestright's own design equipped with a date marker, ML marks on the container, a handy concave reservoir that oil can be drained directly into, a pour spout with lid and enough room in most cases for oil storage of 2 vacuum pump oil changes. The new system is shipping with all new freeze dryers and also available for purchase in the accessories.

Take out their batting. Put a basket-type coffee filter or two on the bottom of the upper level you took their batting out, and then jam in cotton. I used cotton balls from the dollar store. You want them in tight so there are no direct channels down. Then reassemble. Works well -- my oil is pristine. Fod longer use get a baster and suck it the sludge and water that collects at the sides and corners at the top. Mine has been working for about a year now and I am going to change the cotton out shortly. I have an old standard and I filter after every use to keep the pump healthy (and while the unit is defrosting)

Have been using the filter picture from HR . Have run over 60 filtered runs thru the original filter. This filter is still doing a great job. I change oil every run now. After each run there is made .2 of a ounce of water in top of filter after going thru. Take a couple sheets of toilet paper clean that out and dump in trash it ‘s all water. Very little junk. The oil in bottom is completely free off all water and very clear. Take Oil from bottom pour in original quart which came with machine. Recycle oil over and over. The new hose only keeps water into oil to a very little each run. Just got in habit to change oil each cycle. No Error yet up to 70 cycles done now. My option this picture filter works great and just bought Replacement filters for it. Bill

I liked the old "Henry" type with cotton fiber and not the mattress fill. I think it filters faster than 5 hours too. I have an older machine. I had ordered and have the smaller diameter hose and I could not get to a sufficient level of dryness. While there may have been less water in the oil, there was more in the food. I have an old "standard" pump from before the days of alternatives.

I got the new filter with my unit month ago, came with the larger hose. The new HR filter won't fit my Britta pitcher Britta has slots that would prevent it from going all the way in. There is a plastic rib that guides the Britta filter in. BUT looks like if you got a hack saw and cut off half of the down shaft it should allow the new filter to fit.

I always read the instructions, sadly mine didn't come with any. Although it is a huge improvement from the original oil filter, it is narrow and easily tippable. Has anyone checked to see if the HR filters will fit the Brita pitcher? Brita pitcher is much more stable (wider base) in my opinion.

I purchased my Harvest Right medium TODAY. Studying the provided instructions and will be setting it up tomorrow. However, this video said to change out the vacuum line to the smaller black lines because the are better at minimizing condensation in the oil. The new unit I bought today has the larger clear hose. Are the new FD's supposed to come with the smaller black hoses or is that an upgrade? Also, please,,,how many times can you filter the oil before you toss it? Thanks.

Same here - 24 hours later not a drop has filtered through - was there a piece of tape covering the filter part that I overlooked? This is bizarre and frustrating. Also, I found the slim design of a water pitcher to not be conducive for this purpose - it is so top-heavy when full of oil (that doesn't filter fast, like water would) that it tipped over TWICE all over the floor. WHATTA MESS. Use caution, super easy to have it teeter over if you just bump it.

How many cycles do you use filtered oil - in otherwords, at what point do you do a complete oil change? Also the Robinair oil looks very clear. As you run it through numbers of cycles does it change color - slightly? noticeably? I'm wondering when must you chuck the filtered oil and replace with new? I'm wondering about the oil breaking down and no longer protecting the pump. Thanks, looking to buy Med FD w/Prem filter this month.

‼🛑‼CHECK YOUR VACUUM HOSE WHEN BUYING A NEW HARVEST RIGHT!! Thank you Brian for some great videos. We bought our Harvest Right a month ago, ran 8 batches with no problems. On the ninth batch the vacuum would not drop enough to enter the dry cycle. "Oh, no a vacuum leak already??" Called Harvest Right customer support (CS) and after trying several suggestions, the last ditch effort was to drain and flush the pump by following the instructions they emailed me (Flushing instructions are not in the owners manual or the manual for the pump). Draining and flushing the pump worked and the vacuum draws down well below the 500mTorr needed. But, I wondered why the pump needed to be drained and flushed after only eight batches when the manual says after 20-25. I just happened to watch your video today and caught what you said about the smaller size hose that the newer units are sold with and the issue of condensation and water getting into the pump with the older style hose. Hmm. Our freeze dryer was manufactured in October 2021, but came with the larger, older style hose. I called Harvest Right and explained that our new unit came with the older style hose. They were surprised and said that shouldn't be. They suggested I order the smaller hose or call the dealer we purchased it from (Tractor Supply Co.) to see if they had possibly enclosed a hose from an older unit by mistake. Tractor Supply said I received everything that came with it from Harvest Right. However, the Tractor Supply manager told me to go ahead and purchase the correct hose for the unit from Harvest Right and he would reimburse me for the cost. Kudos to Tractor Supply! That's customer service! So the newer style smaller hose is on the way. Thanks for pointing that out Brian!

The hose you did get should have a smaller diameter hole in the metal fitting on the end. I got mine in september it's the fat clear hose, it came with another clear hose similar to the drain hose, I thought it was to shove inside the vacuum hose like I've seen in some older youtube videos but there was no way that was fitting in the tiny metal hole. I did order a new black one from HR same metal fittings with the tiny hole on the ends. It doesn't hurt to have a spare. I also ordered a spare door gasket. I saw on FB someone showed pics of their broken vacuum hose. Now I'm glad I ordered a spare

Also would like the controller to push notifications to my phone or text me when the modes change. I know I can put a camera on it, but would be nice to bake it in the design.

There's only certain types of oil recommended. The premium pump, at multiple different places they say to use only the harvest right premium vacuum pump oil. So far so good, works great. The cheapest pump you can use other alternatives. I used to use dairyland since it cleans out the pump. I have since upgraded to the premium pump since it uses less electricity and you only have to change the oil every 25-30 batches, and rach batch finishes a bit faster. It's WAY quieter too. I read up on the oiless and I saw so many people that had issues with them so I didn't go that route.

I've finished my Sunday bloody Mary and the pork butt is in the smoker, so forgive me if I'm exposing my ignorance. I'm thinking a filter using centrifugal principles might be pretty cool. Maybe someone with an old unused juicing machine could whip up a proof of concept device that would put this device to shame and do the process on the fly as part of the whole function of the overall machine. P. S. I wouldn't be adverse to accepting the new Harvestright model as a tip for the idea though.

These are expensive.Specially for the replacement filters. A year ago, I got an inexpensive Brita container just like this. I got some quilting batting from walmart and wrapped it super tight. Then I placed that inside 2 coffee filters and stuck it in the filter opening. Needs to be very tight fit. It's inexpensive. Freeze the oil first and the water separates and sinks to the bottom and you can just spoon it out before filtering. With the supplies I got, paid like maybe $20-$25 for everything and I have enough to change out the filter at least a hundred times, and each one can be used multiple times. After one time of using the original harvest right filter that came with the freeze dryer (not this one), it literally came apart and started leaking everywhere. Useless.

I have seen discussions about the different pumps and the need to change oil in all but the crazy expensive one but saw nothing about filtering oil. You made this video as if everyone knows about the need to filter oil. I still don't know what the deal is. Whenever you are trying to teach something, you must first describe the problem and why they need your information. Very frustrating.

*@zak2u2* This channel has lots of thorough, informative videos. And he stays on top of pump & filter info. I got my FD 2 weeks ago. Received the old filter, which I used for my first oil change. I wanted but couldn't afford the oil-less pump. Glad I didn't get it. The process for changing oil is fast & super easy. And who wants to do a factory rebuild every two yrs on an oil-less?! The premier would have been nice, though! I did not receive a pillow, and was not prepared for the condensation. 😠 I found a guy on yt that walks through the process of building a thick plastic replacement for the pillow. It stops the condensation, and keeps the view! HR should have thought of this..I'm going to go that route, I'm not in the desert. Beyond the condensation, I've had no issues with my FD, works as advertised. I've got 4 trays of diced ham drying now, for FD Denver omelets 😉👍 Love the dividers 👌 Brian's Chili Mac recipe is yummmy!
