You are the Bob Ross of Gardening and Freeze drying. Thank You!
Well you've saved my bacon. I was thinking I needed another year of physics to pull this off but now I feel like I can get to it. Thanks man
I aspire to one day own one of these. I can, ferment, freeze, and dehydrate, but I like the soft yet crispiness of freeze dried food.
I got the medium sized one with the oil feee pump for Christmas. Love it so much. It’s running everyday right now as I harvest and freeze dry garden fresh produce! I love how simple it is to use. It’s a little noisy but I have it in my mud room so I can close the door and not hear it throughout the house.
I love listening to you explain details. You don't talk too fast and you show exactly what you are doing. Thank You! I just got my freeze-dryer yesterday! My bread is in there now testing and cleaning out the new car smells. I got the premiere pump with the medium-sized freeze dryer. The trays seem small, but I am sure it will be plenty for our small family.
You are a very good teacher! I appreciate you taking your time to share your experiences and expertise with us.
We had one for over a year, still having fun. We have a big garden, that’s why we bought one to preserve. We like most all that we done, love making meals, salads Eggs, (whites if you want meringue), soups , desserts, ice cream, milk
Such an awesome bit of kit Scott. Brilliant video too
Great job with your video instructions. I plan to purchase a small freeze dryer since I am the only one in my home. Your video makes it extremely easy to setup the equipment for the freeze dryer. Thanks. ❤
Thanks for this information. I saw one of these freeze dryers when I was in Tractor Supply recently, and I thought about how nice it would be to have freeze dried fruit and vegetables from my garden in the middle of winter. The commercially freeze dried fruit and vegetables rehydrate very nicely.
I was just given one. Need to learn how to use it.
Thank you for your video. You are the first to say that the trays would be cold upon removing them after the bread run. I thought something was wrong with mine. I set it up on Monday, and after completing the bread run, my trays were freezing.
I just set up my freeze dry machine as I am using it primarily for Freeze Dry Candy and Snacks This video helped us so much. He really explains very well. Thank You
I just got my new freeze-dryer. LIke you, I read the manual and now I am researching videos. So today I run my test batch. Avocados are on sale and I want to freeze-dry a bunch.
Thank you so much. That was very informative and meticulous as always. So glad you're doing this. You make it look achievable! I look forward to subsequent videos.
This freeze dryer looks wonderful. Great video and excited to learn more.
Thanks for sharing Scott I finally took the plunge investing in the medium freeze dryer …small glitch I’m assuming the forklift used to place it in my vehicle damaged the side but also the front door hinge..no problem taking it back later to exchange for another one..can’t wait to get started…thanks for sharing this simple how to video
Nice thorough video for those that need info. Enjoy!
Thank you for this tutorial I am considering investing in one…doing research at the moment…I’m sure you will keep us updated,stay blessed
Thank you. Wasn't sure about the value but you help me understand its positioning. Thanks again.
We just bought a "scratch and dent" model direct from Harvest Right, hubby and I got a tax refund this year and put it in on the dryer. Living in the middle of nowhere as we do we're a good 2 1/2 hour drive to a WalMart or WinCo store to stock up on groceries. After losing 2 freezers full of frozen food in the past (we were evacuated due to a wildfire and they cut power to our area) I think this is a wise investment for us. We also think with the uncertainty of things it's a good idea to be prepared with a long lasting food supply. Thanks for posting your video, it was a big help!
We got ours at the beginning of this year but have not used it! After watching your video, I am ready! Will have my husband watch this and will read the manual! Thank you!

Great Video. Thank you Gardner Scott!
Great explanation! I have seen a lot of others but not as straightforward TFS👍🌱
Scott, you're straight shooter. Best video for set up.
I’m interested in buying a HR and this video is great information! Thx
I love mine I had for about 5 months I think everyone should have one
Happy for you, wish we could afford one.
Great video!, Thank you!
These videos are so very helpful! Is there also a simple step by step (non narrative) guide to the entire process for running a batch that includes when you turn on the pump, open/close valve, etc at the start and end of the process?

Hi Scott, thanks for the video, it was super helpful! I just bought mine and was wanting to know if the drain valve for water has to be higher than the bucket it goes into? Also how long does the oil last usually, ie when will I have to replenish? Finally I was just wondering if you always have to wait in between batches or can you pop the next batch in immediately? Please let me know, thanks!
@GardenerScott
5 ай бұрын
Hi! Yes, the valve should be higher than the drain to avoid backflow. Harvest Right says you don't need to change oil until 20+ cycles. You can do a new batch right away but it depends on how much water was removed. There can be a lot of ice buildup and I would suggest thawing and draining it so it runs best.
WOW, Pretty SlicK!
Be aware that, depending on the moisture level in the air, you will get quite a bit of condensation dripping from thr face of the door. You might want a towel under that door to protect the wooden top. Have fun!

Thanks for the tip. I have low humidity but did notice moisture around the door.
Do you have a video on what is freeze drying and why would one want to do it? I thought freeze drying used vacuum ... so why what is it would be coming out of that tube when you purge the system?

Scott, Question...BREAD RUN, had my "bread" not been completely dry and I needed to chose MORE TIME, do I need to CLOSE THE DRAIN VALVE, before running more DRY TIME?
@GardenerScott
Жыл бұрын
Yes, the drain should be closed. The screen should have a reminder message to say that.
Congrats on your new addiction. I've been freeze drying since January and I saw a mistake you made. Your trays should be warm, not cold when the cycle is done.If they are cold then you missed your extended dry time window, and the machine will refreeze the food to protect it. At that point you're starting the cycle over. Mose people will add extra dry time to the custom settings just in case they're not around when the cycle finishes. I added 12 hours to mine. You are also going to want to put a small fan aimed at the green section of vacuum pump. Good luck. Blue.

Thanks for the tips. The cycle finished when I was asleep and I'll modify times as I learn more.

Invest in a scale that measures in grams. The 100% sure fire way to be certain your food is completely dry is to weigh the trays in grams when the cycle says it is complete, put the trays back in the machine and set additional drying time for at least 2 hrs (this is different than your extra dry time that is in your settings). After the additional 2 hrs is up weigh the trays again. If they lost more than 2 grams of moisture put them back in the machine for another 2 hrs until when weighed they have not lost more than 1 gram of moisture. That is when you will know they are completely dry. THEN you can either manually defrost or have the machine do the defrost.

It isn’t starting the cycle over, it’s preserving the food until you can get it out. My manual reads-WARM TRAYS: The freeze drying process includes warming the trays. Trays will be warm immediately after the batch ends. If you are unable to remove trays immediately after a batch ends, the unit will cool and freeze the material that was freeze dried. This safely preserves your food until you are ready to remove it. The extremely cold trays can be uncomfortable to remove with bare hands. To avoid this, you may use gloves, hot pads, or, simply warm the trays. Push the WARM TRAYS option on the screen and wait 5-10 minutes before unloading.

Should I get the bread wet and then pre-freeze it before trying to freeze dry it?

I love this video I am not get any coming up but the freezing screen and the pump comes does the pump run while it is freezing Can you only use 2 tray at a time I have four. I am sure it is operator error Thank you
@GardenerScott

The freezing cycle can take a long time and the pump can run for many hours during the drying. You can use just two trays but it is more efficient to fill it with four trays.

i don't know what i was trying to say in the first line of my last question. i noticed that in your set up video that the total hrs. for the test run was around 12hrs. can you pleas give me a a time that the freezing period took ? Was the total time 12 hrs. How do I know what my freeze temp is for freezing time is? the pump has not turned on after 2hrs of freezing with my bread set up. Should i just let it run? I am smelling a trang smell thank you
Can you run another batch right away..or do you have to defrost each batch?
@GardenerScott
Жыл бұрын
Much depends on how much ice is built up. A defrost is quick and usually a good idea.
Can you set the temperature lower for herbs at about 85 degrees?
@GardenerScott
Жыл бұрын
The temperature drops to about -40.
Does anyone know if you’re suppose to keep the pump turned to the on switch all the time or do you turn it off when not in use? Thank you
@GardenerScott
Жыл бұрын
You can turn it off when not in use, but the pump won't run unless a freeze drying cycle is on.
Scott, I am waiting on my Harvest Right, I'm a manual reader as well. But, if there is a video, I would prefer to watch that. Easier on the eyes! I have been watching how to' video's, but, I can't seem to find this answer. When you were done with the bread, if you had something to freeze dry, would you have been able to start a new batch? Or do they recommend that you defrost and start over?
@GardenerScott
Жыл бұрын
The bread doesn't have much moisture so starting a new batch right away is okay. For other foods I've found defrosting in between batches works better.

@@GardenerScott I got mine in today..YAY. But, our manual didn't come with the pre-test instructions. We have our bread in already. Should we do the function test after this is done or let it go?
@GardenerScott

@@k.p.1139 I would let it go. There is a big learning curve in the first few batches and you'll have opportunity to check different functions later.
Super jealous
Didn't you defrost the freeze dryer after the diagnostic tests? You need to do that before you run a batch (or that bread). Correct?
@GardenerScott

The freeze dryer should be defrosted after each batch. It can be electric or ambient air.
My freeze dryer should arrive tomorrow. Does it have to be set up for 24 hours before testing the testing and bread run?

It may take some time for the internal liquids to settle before using so letting it sit for awhile is a good idea.
