What's crazy to me is that all these characters are still in the game in some way. -Ken was in the base roster -Banjo got in as DLC -Shadow and Isaac were assist trophies -Chorus Kids, Mach Rider and Geno were spirits.

Never believed Grinch leak for a second. The GRINCH would never get in smash. Edit: Still it was fun to see the arguments.

You know what I think? I think the Grinch leak was just some person’s wishlist. Like they went and made a banner with all the characters they wanted for Smash. And people thought it was a leak or something.

Funniest part about that whole situation is people only started bragging about how they knew it was fake all along AFTER it was confirmed fake. Despite how smart people think they were the Grinch Leak DID have quite a lot going for it.

I knew it wasn't real because if you have eyeballs and actually looked at the image, it looked fake! So I said it was fake and GUESS WHAT!? I was correct. I knew it was fake from the beginning Edit: I commented the word "fake" on one of the Grinch leak videos about a week before it was confirmed fake. You might have only saw the comments of people saying it was fake after they posted it, a lot of people did lie and said they thought it was fake after it was confirmed fake. You are also correct about the image having a lot going for it. Me too what a weird leak

It's funny to see that every characters of the Grinch leak ended up being represented in Smash Ultimate in some way (whether by spirits, assist trophies or fighters).

Three other things I remember that I guess argued that the grinch leak was real 1) The mural on the website was cut off (I believe right at little Mac), and in that very spot on the grinched mural was Isaac, so people thought Isaac was going to go there. 2) We saw the leaf healing item (forgot what it’s called) in a new official smash trailer. Of course, never seeing this before, many believed it was related to golden sun I think. 3) Smash announced a direct less than a week after this leak exploded. Which was pretty 50/50 on whether or not they “want to show all the information legitimately before everyone finds out” or “they want to show the real information before everyone gets their expectations too high.” Obviously it was the latter.

For those curious, here’s what actually happened to all the character’s featured in the Grinch leak: Ken: Did actually make it into the game as an echo fighter of Ryu Shadow: Ended up being an assist trophy in the game Isaac: Same deal as Shadow Chorus Kid’s: Ended up being a spirit in the game Mach Rider: Same as the Chorus Kid’s Geno: Same as the Chorus Kid’s and Mach Rider Banjo & Kazooie: Did actually eventually make it into the game as DLC So yeah, only 2 of the characters from the leak ended up being real, and one didn’t even happen until much later, and the other 5’s chances seem to be dead in the water right now.

Honestly the amount of "Leaks" that people buy into and constantly bring up is, besides baffling, just annoying when they are so consistently fake and unbelieveable (though I will say after Ultimate's release certain things have been more "believable" since at this point it feels like nothing is impossible, but the game is already out so there aren't any leaks going on to make this an excuse). Often people will guess every potential character in their minds and then say it true just because they are convinced that if they like the idea of the character then it is therefore an incredibly popular character which means it HAS to be in smash. When the reality is that if you just sit back and wait for Sakurai to reveal them, the reveal is way more of a fun surprise and the characters are often not ones you'd expect (like Pirahna Plant), but because of "leaks" people tend to hate all the newcomers because they aren't the ones they were convinced are the only possible candidates and they somehow feel betrayed by that. Its stupid and causes so much strife in the community when it's 99% faked, and the 1% of times it isn't is when Nintendo accidentally reveals it themselves, which is often only a day or so before the official reveal. And most importantly: ALL of the characters get revealed before release nowadays so their really isn't much reason to speculate since none of them will stay a secret for very long. Making the leaks entirely pointless even if they were always true, since it just ruins the reveal trailer that released immediately after the leak anyways.

It was only convincing if you were predisposed to believing it to be true from the start, which also means believers set themselves up for their own failure and disappointment.

If you think about it, illumination is working with Nintendo to make a new Mario movie now. So maybe there was chemistry between Nintendo and the studio 👀

Smash Crusade does Mach Rider really well. They have him off of his bike for most of his moveset, only using it for his side B. Crusade treats him kind of like Captain Falcon, how he's a character never seen without his vehicle and with a mostly stand alone moveset.

I dont know how anyone believed this leak. Look at the banner: isaac covers up olimar, banjo covers up mii gunner and shadow covers up mii brawler. The leaker needed some space and put the fake characters over ones not a lot of people cared about so it wouldnt draw attention, but for me it always was obvious idk

I find it funny that the leak still predicted characters that got in. Banjo and ken.

I’m so happy that I got my bitey Plant boi rather than the Grinch roster, honestly. Plus, we got Ken and Banjo, and I’m 90% sure that we’re getting Geno anyways. Although I DID fall for the leak completely, and I’m happy that the leak existed because not only is it being called the “Grinch Leak” hilarious, but it drummed up such captivating conversations!

Now that Illumination is making the Mario movie this scares me. :)

Wait a minute, the Grinch is a fourth party character.

I waited since Smash 4 Came Out.

I was on the side of real when the leak came out for the same reason, BANJO-KAZOOIE. I'm relieved that they're in now, Banjo and Kazooie was who I wanted most in smash, and it's still mindblowing they got in later.

Isaac was the primary reason I got so invested in the leak. He's been my most wanted character for a very long time.

Wild to revisit all of this in the here & now, with so many surprises and the end in sight.

Yeah, I still find it hard to believe it’s been a year since this happened. A part of me wanted to think the Grinch leak was real but most of me wanted to not believe in it. And honestly I’m glad it wasn’t. But I wish I could relive seeing the Ken/Incineroar trailer again, because I lost it the minute I saw Incineroar’s eyes.

I never believed it, I was sticking by Sakurai's words the entire time I'm also glad that I didn't get into any arguments, cause it sounds like they were intense

I remember the absolute state of 4Chan immediately after this leak was debunked. The sheer level of cope that people started displaying was amazing.

"I was just a blind Banjo fan who wanted him in Smash" Well do I have a story for you.

When it's almost December and the leaks happen again *Ah, shit here go again*

I remember feeling that Geno and chorus kids where there because there was many people wanting them, and thus wanting this to be true

As Tv Tropes likes to put it, characters such as Waluigi and Lyn are too popular and had so much exposure in recent media. Meanwhile, characters such as Ridley and Banjo were out of shape and likely weren’t in recent media.

@@lance2580 What are you talking about? Ridley has been a constant and consistent character in the Metroid series, as well as Smash. He has also been asked to be playable for longer than both Waluigi and Lyn (both of which became popular smash picks around Brawl/WiiU, whereas Ridley was wanted since Melee, if not 64.) And what do you mean by Waluigi and Lyn being too popular? I'm not sure what you mean by that, are you saying they haven't been included because people want them? Even though Sakurai has history of including characters because they were wanted for long times (Ridley, Banjo, and K. Rool for example)? Which Trope are you referring to anyways?

Plus sakurai already said in a famatsu article that the characters who joined smash is due to the smash ballot. Characters like waluigi,Issac, shadow lost the ballot and were outvoted by the newcomers (keep in mind sakurai was looking at the ballot result during the vote some characters were not that popular back then)

i'm a mod in the gamexplain discord server, and i had to moderate the server during the grinch leak season, while people were sharing conspiracy theories that nintendo bribed gamexplain to deny it for "damage control". that sure was a time

I remember watching the direct without sound in class after I finished my paper, then rushing to lunch to tell everyone about piranha plant. I didn't hear about the grinch leak until ironically after the direct.

At my school, two kids got in a fight over this leak. That’s the biggest thing in our school history, even being acknowledged by our principal.

It was hilarious watching the livestream during Twitch and KZread. A meltdown of denial from #TeamReal as I laughed my ass off because I didn't believe it at all.

I actually had no idea that the leak even happened as I wasn’t every active in the community at the time.

The Grinch Leak fell and in its ashes rose the Plant Gang. In all honesty, it sucked seeing people being “disappointed” by a leak that they couldn’t prove was real and using that as an excuse to throw a fit on Twitter.

inclusing The Grinch in Smash would be as random as including characters such as Harry Potter, Clover from Totally Spies, or Scooby-Doo

Am I the only one who's shocked that people wanted the Grinch in Smash? It just seems totally wrong...

You know, i had three big reasons to not believe the grinch leak back then. No.1: it was too good to be true. Basically everyone in the leak was a character that has a large fanbase - especially in the US. No characters that are more for the japanese fans in the game that's made in japan and with japanese consumers first in mind? Something's fishy. No.2: sakurai directly stated that ultimate wouldn't have that many newcomers. In the end, we got 10 newcomers at launch. If the leak was real, it would've been 14 i believe. That number just felt too high. No.3: if this guy really had such great access to the complete art, why not take an actually good photo? Why take a blurry picture like you never used a camera before and just use that? To conceal faults in the editing, of course.

Just disagree with you on the last point, it was a photo from Snapchat without the intention of being a leak. I mean what Made it more believable in theory was that it was like a accidental leak. But yeah other two points you are totally right bro.

The reason I knew since the beggining that the leak was fake was that there wasn't a new pokemon. Seriously, who thought that the Chorus Kids were in, but no new pokemon?

This is what I love about Smash. Just the feeling that there’s more behind the curtains & we don’t know what’s to come, & there are leaks that are annoying to deal with because it could be spoilers, but in a way there fun to have because it could be anyone & all the speculations & such

Moral of the story: take leaks with a grain of salt

It's June 2020, and I am STILL not over this leak yet

All I've to say, is that when the Direct started, and I saw Ken, I said to myself "I'm gonna main Banjo". He has since become what I set for him to be, come his inclusion in September 4th.

See I had a feeling for banjo kazooie & ken but really I couldn't decide
