Guys, just a little background. James and his father were both officers in the British military. This was recorded as you see it. It was the first time James had actually sung this to his dad. His recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted it to be real and full of genuine emotions because at the time, he thought his father was about die from Stage 4 kidney cancer, so you can understand his voice wavering a little towards the end. Honestly, I have no idea how he managed to get this done, but what a wonderful job he made of it. Great reactions you guys. Same as everyone else who watches this video for the first time!

This was written by James after his father was told it was highly unlikely that he would get the life-saving transplant he desperately needed. The good news is that only a few weeks after the song and video (yes that is James' dad) was released a donor was found and thankfully a couple of years on, his Dad is still alive. I love the song but for me, the fact that his dad witnessed the love and emotion from his son is beautiful. My dad died suddenly and I wish I'd been able to tell him just how wonderful he was to me and my children in such a lovely way. 😍

So glad you reacted to this song. James, father who is in the video with him also was diagnosed with cancer and was going to pass away, this is why James wrote this song as a goodbye to his father while he was here to hear it instead of waiting until he was gone. Later though they found a donor and he is fine now.

That's beautiful man, I worked with my father in my younger days, he was the boss but also the hardest worker you'd ever meet, always pushed me to try my best at anything and everything and i rarely lived up to the standard, There was a long gap where we didn't speak much, not through ill will just life's usual stresses, then I bought a house nearby and was close by for the last 3 years of his life, my own shame of not being very successful or ambitious meant I was too often embarrased to see him, even in some of his last months in the hospital.. but by the end he didn't care, he just wanted more time to spend with his family, warts and all... Just spend some time with your loved ones while you can... and don't let the weird stresses of life let you project your own insecurities, opinions or problems onto someone else. Be in the moment and enjoy it for what it is. maybe i've just drank too much, but comments like the one above, of a son taking on responsibility on behalf of and in the absense of his father makes my heart swell and renews my faith in humanity. Thanks for sharing Mr White

I cry every time I listen to thing song. I think of my Mom, who has passed, when I hear this song. I didn’t have a Dad but my Mom was everything to me.

Why on earth are you apologizing??? This is what music is for, to help us feel and express emotions that defy expression! Having watched the path of James Blunt's career over the years, and seeing him develop into a man of great character, it is inspirational to see him do this moving tribute to his father. What a beautiful world this would be if all fathers and sons (and everyone else) could share their feelings like this!

Even though it is sad and makes one emotional, there is a beauty in remembering and crying. It's bittersweet because it's hard to revisit the pain, but pain is a part of every story and relationship; of course it's not the best part. It's not healthy to live in grief, but it is healthy to revisit it from time to time. It gives one the opportunity to release some of the pressure that builds and often goes unspoken. That built up pressure often manifests itself in negative ways, both physical and mental. It's a good thing to have a release valve.
