The Menu of the Day: Mexico City's Traditional Fondas

Ойын-сауық

A fonda is a small, family-run diner in Mexico where anyone can eat classic home-style dishes, picked from a fixed-price "menu of the day." In this MUNCHIES special, produced for the food symposium Mesámerica 2014 in Mexico City, VICE México host Daniel Hernández takes us on a shotgun 24-hour tour covering three of the most emblematic fondas in this huge metropolis. Buen provecho!

    For all those who were commenting "finally something real".... on other munchies vids at high-end restaurants. You have no clue.... When you have a grandma pealing onions with her grand sons playing by her side....that's the real world in latin america, in case you didn't know.

    Usually in méxico (or in spanish in general) when you say "hermanos", which means "brothers" you are refering to male and female siblings at the same time, not that she had 20 sons and no daughters xD

    Typically in Mexico during the early 1900's to 1950's women would begin having children as soon as they began menstruating, and would have incredibly large families.

    Man, there are so many great places to eat on DF. From the basic traditional fonda, to premium gourmet restaurants. If you ever go to DF (because you know you will, you can't deny) go to a restaurant called "La Parrilla Argentina" that's located on Delegación Cuauhtémoc. Most of their menu consist on grill and italian style dishes. They got a special that's so complete, it's perfect for 6. It has chicken breast, T Bone, ribs, chistorra (like chorizo but thinner), polish sausage... man. I'm wasting my time just telling you this, you gotta see it to believe it. Also the pastas are great, specially the ravioli with pesto. Also another good place is VIPS, a chain of restaurants that are all over the city. And like any respectable chain restaurant, has free wi fi. But you better prepare yourself when going there because, even though the map shows it as a small dot, it's a huge city. You can get lost very easy.

    When it comes to Mexican restaurant culture, *what exactly is a "fonda"?* Is it like a *proverbial "hole-in-a-wall"?* As in the spot *looks ugly, but* the *food is amazing?*

  • @Alas85

    @Alas85

    4 жыл бұрын

    Pretty much, a fonda is a hole-in-a-wall, usually family owned, that specializes in cheap menu-of-the-day called comida corrida (full course meals with dessert) and very few menu options. It's more of center and south thing, I don't know a single fonda between Baja and Nayarit, but I'm guessing there must be a few.
