The Martyrdom of Gaza and the Future of Palestine | Norman Finkelstein (2015)

Norman Finkelstein’s address to the UCD Philosophy Society, University College Dublin, on the current state of the occupied territories. Tuesday 10 Feb 2015.
In his address, Dr Finklestein discusses the recent conflicts in the occupied territories which followed the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli youths and a Palestinian teen; Israel's anti-missile defence system, the Iron Dome; Isreal’s Operation Protective Edge; and possible ways to resolve the conflict.
Finkelstein, a political scientist, has written extensively on the political, social and historical state of Israel and the occupied territories. He famously and successfully dismantled and deconstructed 'From Time Immemorial' by Joan Peters which, at the time, was considered a foundational and invaluable text on the Palestine - Israel Conflict.
Finkelstein received his doctorate in 1988 from the Department of Politics at Princeton University. He currently teaches at Sakarya University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies in Turkey. He is the author of ten books that have been translated into 50 foreign editions. The title of his latest book is Method and Madness: The hidden story of Israel’s assaults on Gaza.
“Mr Finkelstein's research is certainly thorough. His characterisations, too, can be brilliant, and he spares nobody...” The Economist (2012).

    The man should just read the quran. In surah 2:191 it clearly states that all lands that were one under islamic control must always remain under islamic control. So if Israel was Islamic, nobody Muslims would have a problem with the way Israel defends itself. The proof of this is that there are millions of Muslims being murdered by Muslims in Sudan and Syria and Afghanistan and I certainly have seen no Islamic protest in Europe or the US that call for a ceasefire or that one side is occupying the land of the other side. The reason is Muslims who are not involved do not care when Muslims murder Muslims. But when it means getting land back under Islamic control then Muslims care a lot because that is demanded in the quran. So the problem for the violence in Gaza and Israel is not Israel, but Islam.

    @Linda Leonard I mostly agree. Here in America, we have people who take the Israeli point of view about the United States. They say that if the nice, white people who founded America should ever become a demographic minority, it will mean the destruction of America. We properly regard such people as profoundly psychotic and point them in the direction of the nearest mental hospital. But somehow this preposterous, overtly racist argument has currency because it's insisted upon by Israelis? I don't get it. If the definition of Israel is a state that maintains a Jewish super-majority by a suite of racist preferential laws and a brutal subjugation of the non-Jewish population, than the "destruction" of Israel is something all decent-minded people should support unequivocally. As to Finkelstein, he's lost the plot. It's hard to even follow what he's saying any more and no one agrees with him. I think his statements castigating supporters of a single state, (including luminaries like Pappe and Gideon Levy) has been shameful as has his vituperative condemnation of BDS is just awful. Here we have so many bright and dedicated young people taking time from their jobs or their studies to do something to exert pressure on Israel and make SOME change in the ghastly state of affairs there and Finkelstein comes along to pour cold water on them and call them a cult. I think it's a disgrace (and I told him so).

  • @phasespace4700

    @phasespace4700

    @Linda Leonard ps: as to Israel's legality under international law, who knows? I certainly think there is very solid ground to question Israel's legitimacy as a state for a whole variety of reasons, from its refusal to declare its borders and its hour by hour expansion by violent conquest to the fact that the establishment of the jewish state came with a variety of explicit conditions, virtually all of them violated by Israel almost as soon as the documents were signed. As one Palestinian sensibly put it "if I agree to sell you my car, you take the car and never pay me for it, do you still own it?"

    Not to mention, you can't speak against Israel or say anything about Israel's war crimes or you could be lablled antisemestic. The problem is that Israel is saying they are the state of Jews and represent Jews. Of course, if you say that, then any words against Israel could be interpretted against Jews, when a lot of the time, its actually about Israel's actions as a state.

    ***** Obviously I'm not a religious person and I don't mean to offend anyone. There is a strong religious component to this as well, apart from the obvious military and financial reasons anyone can cite and which you pointed out and I apologize in advance but here goes nothing: There are strong roots of Christian Zionism which predate Jewish Zionism. Evangelical Christians are hell bent on Jews taking over Jerusalem and rebuilding the third temple. The idea is that we build the temple, G-zus comes and then we get shafted (say for a few thousands who find Jesus. I personally found him on google. typed in Jesus and there he was). It's in the last book of the New Testament. PS: This is no joke. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Zionism It's been happening since 1840 and evangelists are quite strong in america and fuel the Israeli lobby and there is no need for me to say this. No president will be elected unless professing his/her faith 100 times a day. PS PS: And the first kind of Jewish Zionists think Israel should not exist unless the Messiah comes first as the prophecy in the Old Testament says but these are labeled anti-Zionists these days. So IMHO what you said is the closest approximation of the truth I can think of with what I know. But what do I know? I'm just self hating.

    He’s so accurate. He understand this conflict better then anyone. He can read between the line and understands Israel position.. the “peace offensive” example is a better example to understand how well Dr Finkelstein has analysed this conflict. The peace process is a front for ever lasting conflict or at least until the entire region is annexed, making it even more impossible for a just solution to the conflict. “Best way to understand the agenda is to ignore the words spoken and follow the action taken”

    Anogoya Dagaati I understand what you said. So true. I stopped listening to this conversation years and years ago. And now that I'm checking in again, I see it hasn't changed at all. The only difference is that there are Jewish people _in Israel_ who are vocal about ending the idiocy and are friends with Palestinians _intentionally and visibly._ The ignoring and bloodshed has only increased. Clearly there is something going on here that has nothing to do with Nationalism or land or territory or whatever the fuck they are claiming. There is something behind the curtain that is driving this. All the talk-talk is just a distraction. Check Naomi Klein for some sanity. Peace,

    And this is why your "legitimate criticism" is antisemitic. Because you don't say facts, you make up lies. The massacre is sabra and shatilla is a long lasting proof and a very sad example, to how for 3000 years jews are blamed for things they don't commit. From drinking Christian blood to spreading diseases to now massacre. You should feel very ashamed for spreading lies about who committed this killing, but you probably not. Because just like other liable spreading haters, you actually believe your own lies, despite every evidence proving otherwise.
