About 10 years ago in a teeny tiny article in the Los Angeles times they showed Israelis ( living in settlements) setting Olive trees on fire. The trees were over 600 years old. Around this time also in los Angeles times a UN worker was shot at next to his jeep clearly marked UN as well as his neon orange vest. No other media mentioned this. I went around this time to the leventine center in Los Angeles run by a man whose parent was a Moroccan Jew. He brought in former Israeli soldiers ( one female) who educated us on what really goes on with American tax payer dollars. They brought photos of what Israeli soldiers not only do to Palestinians ( children too) but what they do to refugees. Israel was the only country in that area who took in only a few Sudanese refugees. Turkey, Syria, etc... took in thousands. One of the photos shows a huge aluminum pot with soup being thrown on the floor upside down so they couldn't eat. Their home was made from scraps.

As time passed by the Gaza strip has become almost uninhabitable by humans. Israel and Germany have been accused of committing/facilitating genocide in front of the ICJ. The governments and the mainstream media are complicit. In Germany any attempt to oppose this genocide is met with accusations of being an antisemite, pro Hammas, and against the existence of Israel.

All of us need to speak to Congress, we need to call our elected senators and representatives, and let them know what we think about the way they spend our money. The pro Israel lobby supporters call them all the time, we also need to make our voices heard. It won't change things overnight, but without participation nothing will change. As Levy pointed out, the occupation would be over very quickly if the United States stopped supporting Israel's war crimes.

I know what you meant, but nobody is chosen. Nobody. The Bible and The Quran are books of myths, supremacy and abhorrent outlook on life and relationship with others. I am for teaching these books in every classroom around the world. This brave man should be hailed as one of the few truly 'righteous' Israelis left in that country. His painful description of the mindset of the average Israeli including those who would describe themselves as left-leaning, chimes with everything I've ever heard personally from the many Israelis I've met over the years. Almost the whole population of that country has allowed itself to be brainwashed into a mentality of blind hatred towards the Palestinians and it's only brave souls like Gideon Levy that continue to give diaspora Jews like myself some hope that Israel may yet emerge from it's collective state of psychotic madness. The approach, the rhetoric, the logic of this speaker in describing eloquently the lack of critical thought in his homeland is so similar to my own that I thought he was talking, while I listened to his condemnation of Israeli society, with its arrogance, its denial, and its unified acceptance of oppression of unacknowledged victims, I believed he was expressing my own opinions of my own United States of America. In this speech I met and recognized a soul mate. The Liberals in the United States, those who put Barack Obama into office, who lament his retirement and wish for the Good Old Days of his Administration, are the very image of the Israeli Liberals who accept the Occupation; just as the speaker in this video is disheartened by the constant, deadening, offensive refusal to admit the humanity of any but ourselves, so I cannot feel the least hope that the United States of America will let fall the wool from its own eyes.

If you want someone more transformative or radical than Barack Obama you had best find that person and promote them. Till that happens let us use Obama as a starting place and advocate for additional change.

Mr. Levy's descriptions here match the discussions I have had, one just recently with a man my age who grew up right in my neighborhood in the Detroit suburbs and then moved to Israel. So much we had in common, but every statement, every question, every seeming opinion was in perfect lock-step with the Israeli PR talking points. The same over and over, exactly as Mr. Levy described here and I think he has the fundamental crux of it: As long as the occupation is a positive in Israeli lives, they will have no motivation for change. The denial, the brainwashing is too deep, too ingrained, and too convenient and comforting. BDS is exactly the way to combat this empowering ignorance.

Your former friend has been brainwashed. Was he an Ashkenazi Jews? I know Sepharade Jews who had to leave Northern Africa (Morocco, Tunisia) after the decolonization and chose France. Some of their relatives moved to Israel in the 2000s (they get incentives to settle in areas where you previously had Palestinian villages. Now you have 'suburbs', whole streets lined with identical looking houses. The older French Jews I spoke to have visited Israel multiple times but they're not too enthusiastic about democracy there and about the fact that it is an apartheid state, with the exception that the Blacks in South Africa were not parked in camps and did not have to go through checkpoints to go to work as servants for wealthy whites.

I needed to hear his words, those words, in a time when everything he talked about came to a horrendous apex. Millions and millions of people need to hear what Mr. Levy has to say. Unfortunately, 5 years later, everything he predicted fell on Palestine with a vengeance.
