I'm lonely.... for a person in my life who thinks deeply like this gentleman and can express it. He brought me to tears. I'm surrounded by people going on about TV shows, nail polish, football, and they see nothing in nature. Trees, to them, are only green blobs in the distance. I feel at peace and utterly content when I am alone in nature. I feel alone in a crowd of people. From the comments below, there are others like me out there, but I can't find them because we sit quietly in the room of people, waiting to escape to our place of peace.

Yes, there are many others out there like you (us). I never seem to be “at home” until I am on my farm, in nature. I can sit for hours just watching nature in the forest that surround my place. It’s therapeutic and after grinding hours in the professional world it’s a welcome solace at the end of the week. I have been planning my farm, the orchard, the wash room where I wash my fruits and vegetables for years, now it’s becoming a reality. A place for me to live life at my own choosing!

even after all these years (I'm 61) I still remember the day as if it were yesterday; the day I stated my individuality on my path to today. it was the second day of my first grade experience. I was 5, soon to turn 6 in a few more days (yes, I was an early starter even then) and my teach was attempting to guide me to compliance with standardization of the childhood experience. I was already headstrong and highly independent with a desire for learning and understanding. I didn't recite the morning prayer, didn't stand for "pledges" or the normal conformations of the beginning of the school day. I remember her pleading with me, almost cajoling me to join in. the phrase "don't you want to be like the others?" and me response of "no thank you. I'm not like the others. I'm an individual."..... wafted in the air...... my path was set in stone. the path I've walked throughout my life, and will continue along my way. highs, lows, good times and bad, all intermingle through the mental movie that is my life. I wouldn't change any 1 along this journey. life is 1 hellofa ride...... live it. love it. enjoy the ride......

Beautifully said… we are all interconnected with nature whether we recognize it or not… but getting older… I notice the smaller things I’ve overlooked previously… more now. Being on a beach or in a field… I am in my church… connected to something much deeper and bigger and beyond myself… an awareness of time… the colors of autumn… my favorite season… along with spring… and the new life it brings. I recently listened to a musician… who started painting over the last few years… and said… I never knew there were so many shades of green… till I started painting… it’s the being aware… that observation of what surrounds you… that makes me aware of things I cherish now… I may have overlooked being younger. Life’s lessons… can only be learned by having lived… then you learn that maybe the small things are actually the big things… and of great significance… savor them all… 🌜🌞🌛

This is lovely. I felt that part when he was talking about growing up in an area surrounded by countryside and valuing it while it was there. I spent my teenage years in a relatively small town that still had so much of the country around it and through it. There definitely was a magic to it that I recognized. There was no where in town that you went where you didn't pass a farm or large open fields. Some magazine rated it as one of the best places in the US to live and as a result a large influx of people began moving there while I went off into the world. They were already cutting down the trees as I left to cram in row after row and block after block of middle income housing. Going back I felt a deep sadness that what it was that made this place so special was gone and there is no way to explain it to the people who live there now. It is unrecognizable because the fields and farmlands are gone. The only green left is in precisely manicured lawns with new trees placed just so as the beautiful old ones were inconveniently placed and therefore cut down. There's a reason it's "over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go" and not "over the toll road and through the shopping district". There is a timeless magic in nature that can be felt and understood even if it cannot be quantified or verbalized.

I had the run of nature and plenty to explore all day until I heard my name called for supper. It was safe then to leave doors unlocked. Most kids today will never know how much the world changed in 70 years

As we are approaching our moving date, I see your message and I can totally relate. Your comment is helping me feel more grounded in our decision to move from the suburbs to the countryside as our kids are entering teen years. After seeing our little town cut down the trees and build countless condo units, we couldn't bear the claustrophobic feeling of more concrete and less nature. We had to do something. Going to nature was the only thought in our mind and the only dream in our heart.

You know I believe many of us can relate to the " small town" that many of us grew up in. Those towns are gone now for the most part. I went back to mine after being away for 40 years. Just like you. The trees are all gone. No more farms, no more empty fields of wild flowers instead it is row after row, street after street of houses with maybe 20 ft on either side. I'm was saddened. I walked my hometown downtown area remembering the decorated streets on Christmas watching the parade go by and then having hot chocolate looking into all the store windows. As I walked the downtown area I could hear the laughter of days gone by. I much prefer to be alone now. I have my tiny cottage surrounded by birds and trees and my books and I'm happy.

You have caught Harry Owen's "magic" so wonderfully, so artfully, so deeply that I am lifted up (in these, my autumn days) to a new appreciation of who I am, what I have, and where I am going. Thank you for apprising me of the magic ever before me.

Using the word magic in everyday life has changed it quite drastically. When I look around me, I see the magic everywhere. I stop to notice and appreciate the beauty of everything, of simply being alive and the wonder of existence. I try to use the word in conversation with others, in case it might spark something in someone else. It's so sad to see how most folk just don't see or feel the magic. It's snuffed out of us from a young age. No matter how hard and brutal life is, there is always beauty and magic everywhere, we just need to realize that. It makes the difficult times just a little easier, when we realize that so many of our worries and stresses aren't often as big as we make them. At the end of the day, this beautiful world gives us everything we need to both survive and thrive. ❤️🌲

I have been through a very turbulent life, and am currently in a period of isolation due to traumatic grief. I thought I saw this “magic” before in my life, but I had t really… until I was diagnosed with cancer. I truly saw “it”. It slowed my world down to a trickle…. a gentle hum, a slow warm breeze. I was always someone who appreciated every detail of life, the people, the animals, nature, even the hustle and bustle environment I grew up in and live in. I guess I need to notice the magic in myself more. This has forced me to look at myself, deep within. I still do appreciate everything, I’ve been guided into faith in God, faith in the Universe that we are ALWAYS connected, we just need to spend some time nurturing that connection. ❤
