As an owner of the 3DS version I'd love to agree, but it's actually missing the Giant Mushroom and the Mystery Mushroom. ...That being said, it does come pre-loaded with some levels, which I suppose is a much more desirable feature now that online's gone.

​@@mdudegamer Let's not forget that you can still share levels with 3DS via StreetPass and/or local multiplayer, as the WiiU version has no way of sharing without the online features. In the end, the 3DS port turned out to be the most functional version.

Can be rewired to unofficial servers though. -I honestly feel like SMM1 will be what causes a Wiimmfi successor for Wii U.- Forgot it's already been done since Pretendo exists.

seeing a 'new' mario maker 1 troll level for the first time in like 5 years is so refreshing, theres a certain charm to them that trolls in mm2 have really never been quite able to reproduce

MM2 is misdirection and subversion of expectations, late stage MM1 is actual troll magic.

Mario maker 1 was so surreal. It felt like anything was possible. Stacked pipes are probably my favorite thing.

It's amazing how well SMM1 trolls hold up. That music block muncher troll had me ROLLING 😂

What is Golf is exactly the troll game Carl is talking about. Simple mechanics constantly getting introduced and subverted. It does work very well.

I find it interesting that, now that the servers are down, every player technically has a unique version of MM1. And not just a randomly assigned one, but one the player got to pick.

On the topic of troll games, I don't think it would be as gratifying as in Mario. The fun for me is that Mario has very strict rules and physics, and every time something strange happens it's because the level creator managed to find something strange or managed to fool your expectations. If a game has been built from the ground up to troll you, then there's no thrill of the creator being able to use you expectations against you.

I feel like a troll game could work, but it would have to feel different from MM1. I think something like Celeste but with trolling could work. Nowadays, games with Mario’s movement aren’t very popular (except for Mario).

Basically, the ideal type of game to troll people with would have to be the ideal level making game. In order to build up expectations, you need a ton of normal levels that are fun to play that lots of people would be drawn to, just to build up a proper meta.

I always felt like something was missing from the MM2 vids. This video definitely helped put it into perspective. MM1 had a lot of whacky potential while working with less, so people had to get even more creative to get the crazy stuff to work. The plethora of glitches also helped to keep you on your toes because god knows what'll happen when you hit a block in 1, but you can usually narrow it down to a few results in 2

I absolutely loved early MM2 troll levels. where most of the trolls were just based on the differences in physics and mechanics between MM1 and MM2. This gives the exact same vibes

My hot take is that I don’t find troll romhacks nearly as fun to watch as Mario Maker ones. Trolls are basically as same as stage magic. It lesson it for me literally anything were possible. So I’m nervous about a game specifically for trolls because I think it’ll ruin the magic that comes from the limitations.

Rom hacks don't appeal to me, either. There's too much freedom for them to do anything at all, that it loses the spark.

so much amazing tech especially in SMM2 glitches, but SMM1 trolls (that weren't hot garbage) just were so funny

I Wanna Be The Guy is a troll game because it takes basic platformer mechanics and design language and is able to immediately start subverting it because it's a familiar genre. Spikes are a common obstacle in platformers, and most of them are stationary, but some start moving in unexpected ways.

If you want a troll game that isn't based on an established game, try The Witness, it's a puzzle game with some very trollish sections. It was so popular it inspired a whole generation of twist puzzle games, including Outer Wilds, Taiji, and arguably Baba Is You. There's also a deliberate "The Witness" Troll Level called The Looker.

What you were asking about if a troll game would work, i dont think so. The reason why i love watching you and dgr, this game is so well known and you know exactly what “should” be happening. The good trolls are always funny and surprising for a game that weve all known for almost 40 years.

That cp1 was excellent, I was on the lookout for sus doors the whole time. I Edit: the door behind the goal was something special.

Setting up expectations with basic mechanics and then trolling almost immediately is basically the first section of Pony Island. But then the game design goes completely off the rails (in a good way).

SMM1 will always have a leg up on SMM2 thanks to the freedom it offered. Unpolished, janky, and funny! Nintended at its best.

I think one of the best unanticipated trolls of that level was how Carl is now conditioned to MM2 and thusly expecting jank/trolls from it, but getting hit by MM1 physics instead.

For anybody interested I can really recomend Veriatasium's video on frequency of humans picking random numbers. It actually proves the "3 is the most correct pick a pipe" theory... kinda.

All those CP1s, turns out 2018 was the real Year of the Guts.

It used to be every troll level had a back to CP1 setup but they eventually got phased out and then Geek brought it back with The Year of the Guts.

Thanks for sharing this video on YT, it was really enjoyable. Been following Carl since -20 when i got switch + MM2 and discovered troll levels and a troll community, and the stevo levels has always been extraordinary. It's so cool stevo was a troll level master back in 2019, and as stated that level holds up so good and if the mecanics/glitches could be replicated and was made now in MM2 it would be a really refreshing and cool high quality troll level

I’ve had an idea for essentially an original troll game. Level 1, you jump over some pits with spikes and reach the exit door - which kills you. With nothing to do but experiment, you purposely jump into the spikes and realize: spikes are good. You have to collect them all to clear the level. The rest of the game adds to this concept - taking common objects from video games and using them in unexpected ways.

acording to the question on 12:02 "did you think a troll game would ever work?" I can recommend Eryi's Action. It's a cute little 2D 'trapformer' developed by Xtal Sword from 2013.

I remember back in the original days of mario maker. Fun to see carl grow but mario maker 1 stay the same. :P

There's been a few "troll" type sudoku variants featured on Cracking the Cryptic. I think the legibility of expecations and the kind of puzzly nature that expects the player to think about the consequences helps there

On the Troll Game topic, I had an idea drawn up a while back where a platformer’s world map would have some bonus levels for relatively meaningless rewards, and the levels would start by subverting learned mechanics in a clever way but then get a little *too* clever further on, eventually devolving into a jank mess Idk how well it would work, but if I ever get some free time and motivation maybe I’ll try it out to see how it flows

"I Wanna Be the Guy" is an very old, and very clearly troll game. But you dont enjoy it for the trolls. That game's value is that it is genuine stupid hard to beat at all ON TOP of the trolls.

Anti-Chamber is a game that perfectly does what you describe, it takes the first person shooter premise and then twists it all around

There are a bunch of old flash games or indie pc games that were essentially troll games that were fairly popular like the Impossible Quiz or IWBTG. Simple, tight mechanics and subverting the players expectations are what make troll games work imo.

12:30 I don't think being attached to the world/setting matters that much. To me the really important and difficult thing for a troll game to work is somehow both establishing solid expectations and allowing for those same expectations to be subverted.

I think you don't get these in Mario Maker 2 is because 2 uses an algorithm with the boo button and skips that filter these levels out of the randomized levels. In Mario Maker 1 it felt so truly random, anything could pop up. It was beautiful

Fear and hunger work well as a sort of troll game. It's destroy expectation from jrpg game (including some survival horror and rng element) and you can only advance with the true currency of mario troll level : knowledge.

A Mario maker 3 with a mechanic for intentional stacking of blocks and pipes would be awesome

The thing that sets Dark Souls games apart from souls likes is the trolls. Fromsoft has a very specific sense of humor when they break from the grimdark. When orher devs copy the formula, they transfer all the mechanics from DS, but they don't have the sense of humor, so it typically falls flat. The only devs I've ever seen with a similar sense of humor is MM 1 and 2 trollmakers.

To the chatter at 29:39 yes, I remember The Pinnacle of Level Design! I will never forget the absolute carnage that level was. I don't even remember who played it. Was it Grand Poo Bear or Ryukahr? When I heard about people playing MM1 again, due to Nintendo having been about to cut off its life support, that level is what came to mind immediately. Definitely in the top 10 levels of all time. If somebody asks me, what the word "jank" means, I just show them that level (I can't actually, because I don't know which video it was played in). And that lanky mario section was the ultimate "fuck you for getting this far" to top it off. It truly was the pinnacle of level design o7

I Wanna Be The Guy, now that's an old troll game I haven't heard of in years! There's a few speedrun categories and a dozenish spinoffs, so yes a troll game can be successful on it's own merit without relying on previous nostalgia.
