"Toad's Castle Calamity" is called that way because it's a reference to mario's castle calamity, a 2008-era youtube poop style series of videos with increasingly stupid ways where the castle destroyed animation from smw goes wrong for mario

Yes!!! Someone else realized this, castle calamity was literally one of the earliest sources of exposure I had to Mario, I’m so glad other people get the reference as well 🥲

I grew up on this.

Welcome to Cooldown Town and part 1 of Modern Era! Cooldown town originated as us having too many short level ideas. For the longest time, "The hardest decision of my life" didn't work as a joke level because people weren't getting the joke that the decisions weren't going to be trolls. We had the idea of framing the level as a quiz, and this improved reception significantly. Next video, we have part 2 of Modern Era. This celebrates the style of troll level design that has become the norm since 2020. Thanks for everyone's continued support!

man i remember there was a point in time when everyone in the Wagon World server was just brainstorming ideas for the "hardest decision of my life" level The final product is absolutely beautiful. I am absolutely loving these cooldown levels so far, such fun ideas that you don't normally see in troll levels

Finally a quiz befitting Carl's Mario Maker knowledge.

A one hour carl video? Oh, this one's a treat.

I think I can say without exaggeration that Wagon World is peak Mario Maker. I.e. it's the best set of levels in the game's entire history... and with MM's questionable future, and the sheer amount of effort put into these levels, there might not ever be anything better.

I remember watching DGR play this and when I saw the title, "The Pinnacle of Troll Design," I was just thinking, "It would be so funny if it was just a copy of Thwomp Suc," was only mildly disappointed that it wasn't, THEN THERE WAS A THWOMP SUC REFERENCE ANYWAYS! Thwomp Suc is the true pinnacle of troll design.

49:28 What a cool design trick, using the powerup pause to give the player extra time to start flying! What benevolence! Me 2 seconds later: oh, it was to make sure the player hit their setup just right, nvm.

That Castle Calamity level unlocked memories I hadn't thought of in years

Okay but this has to be my favorite line up of levels each one was hilarious the glitches and super simple false choiche levels had me rolling 🤣

I was able to download the levels during one of the reuploads, and I have to say that the two decision levels are the absolute funniest Mario Maker levels I have ever seen.

I'm not sure if someone told you in chat, but Toad's Castle Calamity is a reference to an old Flash animation called Mario's Castle Calamity, in which Mario tried to destroy the castle, but always failed.

It's always amazing to see years after a game is released how it is absolutely ripped apart by the community, inside and out. Original Doom, Super Mario World and Ocarina of Time is a good example. Now Super Mario Maker 2.

My head can’t wrap around the P balloon upside down troll at 32:00. Previously in the “same” room we see Carl get hit and fall downward normally. Something must have gotten cut in the edit that showed when he entered a pipe.

A friend told me to look up Deep Rock Galactic, and I did. But then I saw this video in my recommended and dropped everything. Time for some rolls and trolls!

That 1-1 (gltich free) level had such great Cat Mario vibes I love it.

It's always a lot of fun to watch these videos where carl hits every single troll in the level on the first try, and then watch poo play the same level and miss around half of them because he doesn't turn off his reflexes when playing troll levels.

This super world is easily the greatest thing ever made in this game and Nintendo still took it down

The Goombas in the pipes at CP looks similar to an old bubbler jukebox... or at least the same effect.

I get so excited when I see an hour long Carl video :)

3:53 this might not be the funniest one, but this is probably my favorite moment out of the entire series. Seeing Carl just humbled down to weakness after seeing such a silly, old age joke just makes me smile.

So instead of hamsterwheels in carls brain, you can get tubes with goombas that keep going around. I loved the simplicity of the glass tubes and the goombas moving through them endlessly 💖

You know the video is going to be interesting when you see that face in the thumbnail

I used to upload a little bit to Mario maker 2, but i ended up being busy with life stuff, and kinda just haven't uploaded in forever. Made a halfway decent troll level, and a bunch of Kaizo stuff. But i will say, a Mario Kart Maker would totally get me so busy. I'd pre order that and play it for hours on end, for sure

It's awesome how I thought the game peaked a while ago, but the new tech and meta are so fresh to watch.

It's such a travesty that Nintendo deletes levels and bans some of its best creative minds. If they don't want this jank invading super expert, then allow creators to tag levels specifically to avoid that. But it's a crime against humanity to delete these works of art.

Sorry we didn't show it at least once, but you can't see anything it's all offscreen. It teleports you apparently and plays a sound effect to cover it.

The level 1-1 (glitch free) reminds me of the game Syobon Action cat mario. I still have PTSD of that game.
