I like knitting shawls so then I discovered how I like to wear them. Sometimes a small one just gets wrapped to dress up an outfit rather than a necklace or scarf, but I live in Toronto, Canada, and summer days can be so hot, but if you sit out in the evening it can get just a touch of a chill so a sweater is perfect. And on a cold winter day, I wrap them around to give lots of warmth under my jacket. And they tie easily to my bag, to make them portable.

I’m not a fan of shawls either, after making a few and then not wearing, so during lockdown, I unravelled them and crocheted a blanket as well as unpicking garments I had stopped wearing. Reuse and room in my wardrobe!

I wear shawls pretty much whenever. I wear them to work, at home, when I go for a walk in the park with my husband... and it depends on my mood or how much of a chill I feel as to whether I throw one around my shoulders or wrap it around my neck. They can be a nice layer of warmth with a summer dress if it gets breezy. Sometimes I wrap up in one when it's too cold for me to sleep comfortably, but my husband finds it too warm to add a whole extra blanket to the bed. I like triangle shawls, but depending on the pattern, I find the point goes quite low (I'm also short, so that helps haha), so I'd like to try knitting or crocheting one with a shallow curve instead.

Lovely podcast! I'm a total shawl knitter. I love knitting and wearing shawls. I tend to wear them wrapped around my neck like a scarf, but I find them to be more fun to knit and more substantial to wear - they also make a great blanket for little kids on the go! I really like the process of knitting shawls. I think shawl patterns incorporate a lot of interesting techniques, and I love the way they take shape as I'm knitting them. For some super fun and unique shawls - Stephen West is incredible. Andrea Mowry has beautiful and meditative designs. I am head over heels for everything that Natasja Hornby of Moonstruck Knits designs - my next shawl is the Mare shawl, I think. For more shawl inspiration, Amy Palko of The Meaningful Stitch has a great youtube podcast and she speaks beautifully of shawls.

No need to be nervous! You are a natural - hard to believe it is only your second podcast and only your third year of knitting! Shawls - they are everything - I thinkg I have one for any occasion, I have so many of them that I have started donating them to knitworthy people around me. Some of my all-time favourites are Stephen West's Daybreak and Metalouse (I knitted several of each), and in general I find triangular shawls with a long wingspan the best. The latest one I made is Bark Lines by Joji Locatelli - absolutely lovely and her patterns are well written and not expensive. If you make a big shawl it is almost like a blanket, perfect for sitting at the computer when you do not want to bundle yourself in a large blanket. If you wear winter coats they fill in the front gap nicely. A light laceweight shawl is easy to carry in your bag for chilly summer evenings. Really, give them a try and try different materials to find what suits you.

@@_laurapenrose_ You might also need to look into some popular free patterns on Ravelry, such as Reyna (a great one-skein project that is surprisingly big and practical), or Close to You by Justyna Lorkowska. And Joji Locatelli has a few designs for a single skein that are still rather big and wearable - it might be a good start before you commit to a big shawl project (the amount of knitting equals a sweater sometimes). Good luck! I am looking forward to what you come up with for the next episode.

I enjoy the options a shawl gives me. A scarf can only be worn 1 or 2 ways. But a shawl can be worn over the shoulders, around the neck, bunched up cozily under my chin, etc. I usually just wear a scarf when I go out, but I find I grab my shawl off and on during the day during the cold and chilly months.

Hi Laura! How lovely to have found you! For a beginner podcaster you’re doing a brilliant job! Really enjoyed these two episodes and looking forward to more. I also knitted the Dahlia top/dress for my daughter (actually 8 of them) and it’s my favourite pattern of all time. I loved the cute little cardigan and beret that you knitted for your little one they are so cute too! I totally understand how you feel when you see her wear them. I also love asking my viewers a question at the end and it becomes a lovely discussion in the comments so I loved that segment a lot. As for shawls, I wear mine when I go to knitting events to show them off haha. I am especially proud of my Slipstravaganza by Stephen West and I love wearing it. It’s also handy to have with you when the weather’s unpredictable. Here in New Zealand it can be super hot in the morning and then really rainy and cold in the afternoon- that’s when I’d wear my shawl. It’s also nice to throw it on when I wake up in the morning and go to our not yet warmed up living room. I do hope you give shawls a go and I’m sure you’ll love them in the end. Thanks for the lovely videos and the beautiful phrase “tickle your knitting pickle” made me smile every time I heard it. I chatted to my knitting friend this morning and this is what tickled my knitting pickle. It’s nice to have somebody who loves and understands knitting, you know? Looking forward to seeing more of your videos and you’re always welcome to my channel too. I’m a Russian girl living in New Zealand, also a spinner and indie dyer. So if you have the time, I’d love that you popped in. Big hugs from New Zealand. Marina

It’s funny that you asked the question about shawls. Just yesterday ,I was thinking about what makes shawls so much fun for me. Personally, I like shawls bc they serve many purposes! I see them as a tapestry of fun stitches. It gives you a chance to try out all sorts of stitch patterns. Also, it’s like making a blanket but quicker (depending on the size of it obviously). It’s also like making a garment but you don’t need to do a gauge swatch. It’s also a great chance to try different types of yarn that are new to you! I just love shawls.

I’ve really enjoyed your first 2 podcast episodes and the name is super cute! I personally love knitting and wearing shawls. Anytime you wear a scarf you can wear a shawl, so sometimes I wear one wrapped tight around my neck for warmth. Other times I wear a lighter one draped more loosely around my neck and it’s more decorative for inside or outside. They’re so fun to knit because there are so many beautiful patterns and its a great way to use all the beautiful hand dyed yarns. Plus no need to gauge swatch... they always fit! My most worn shawl is actually a cowl - the Shift by Andrea Mowry aka DreaReneeKnits. It’s very easy to wear and stays around my neck no matter what I’m doing, which tickles my pickle!

Lovely visit! Your work is beautiful as always! I ‘attempted’ crochet when pregnant with my first child, it lasted a whole 15 mins and I was done😂 Fast forward to getting pregnant with my second child I attempted crochet again and it finally clicked for me. That was a little over 5 years ago. I picked up knitting in the Summer/Fall of 2020. I didn’t even notice the different shades in the the sweater sleeve until you pointed it out, again like others have said, I think it looks great that way! For the shawl question you had... I would wear my shawls in church. I always take it with me and usually at some point during the church service one of the kids are cold or I slip it over my shoulders if I get a slight chill. I also use most of my shawls as a scarf also. Just a different look than a traditional scarf you can pick up in a store. I tend to wake up earlier than the kids and I sit on the porch by myself for a little while just to get awake and enjoy the sun rise, I will wear one then as well!🥰

My daughter would say I am more Professor Twelaney (she is in her early 20's now). Get all the cuddles while you can, they do grow fast! I think the popularity of shawls is from "Outlander". I like the mohair shawls because they are not bulky and can be to used as a scarf, but laid over my shoulders when I sit to knit they add warmth with out the extra fabric around my arms. Again you have tickled my knitting pickle. So looking forward to the next podcast ! God's Blessings

I very much like your down-to-earth approach to knitting. I love shawls which surely has to do with the fact that I get cold easily. One of my favourites is the Eyeball Shawl by Stephen West. I often wear it at home when it's cold in the mornings or evenings. But it's also very cozy around the neck in the winter time outside. I just knitted the Lightweight Hipster Shawl by Joji Locatelli because I wanted something not so chunky and big for the warmer days. I like it a lot and I'm doing a second one right now :)

I have knit a lot of shawls .... they are fun to knit to try special yarns without the commitment of a sweater, as well as trying different techniques and stitches to create different shapes. I live in Australia so it isn't often cold enough for shawls but I do wear mine sometimes. The new 52 Weeks of Shawls book from Laine is very inspirational and also just lovely to look at. Hi Laura, congratulations on the success your podcast has had so far 👏 I have just started knitting the Boneyard Shawl by Stephen West. I've never knitted a shawl or a blanket before. It was always jumpers and scarfs before I switched to crocheting a few years back. Last year I crocheted an oversized shawl that I use whilst sitting at my desk if I get a little chilly, or whilst watching TV... that is if one of my kids isn't wrapped up in it. I decided to learn continental knitting and wanted a simple pattern to practice on and this is knitting up lovely. It will probably be added to a pile of blankets in the living room as I don't intend on wearing them outside. I'd feel too little house on the prairie 😂 x

I am also new to shawls! I have only made one so far, but I find I mostly use it as a scarf. However, it can also serve double duty now that the temperature is a bit all over the place, as I don't have to bring a sweater "just in case it gets cold" if I can use my scarf as a shawl also . I really want to knit the Vertices Unite shawl, I think that is my favourite shawl pattern on my knitting list :) I really enjoy your podcast, and I especially like hearing about how you adjust patterns, as this is something I do frequently as well. Love love love your podcast, so many bits to comment on,your excitement on how a garment looks inside and out, fo’s , accidental fade 🤗 . My first shawl was free your fade by Andrea Mowry , l knit it twice once in 8 ply and then in 4 ply ,I thought the 8 ply would be quicker which it was but it also needed more yarn 🤔 both are great depending on the weather, I live in Sydney,Australia , shawls , for me replace the need for a coat , then I knit an epic shawl called Midsummer Rose by Lene Tosti the pattern is in Laine no. 5 . It is an enormous half circle, when I look at it now I can’t believe I knit it, I want to knit it again 😃. Thanks again for a great podcast looking forward to the next one ☺️

Awesome episode! I completely know what you mean about shawls. I started with aran weight traingular shawls and I never could get comfortable wearing them. Then I discovered Stephen West's Dotted Rays and I found the shape for me. It's an off center crescent that's super easy to tie around your neck which I saw Ellie from Skeindeer knits doing and now I wear one all the time in the winter inside and outside with my jackets. I'd highly recommend that pattern! It's fun and you can use different fingering weights yarns however you want. Take care!

The Spindrift Shawl by Helen Stewart was my first and I made a few. It is small enough to wrap around my neck and wear in the house on a cold night. I've made several Vertice's Unite shawls by Stephen West (great for using stash). I just made my first triangle shawl, Unwind, by Tracie Millar which I gifted, but it came out lovely. I wear all of my shawls inside or out.

I love your sweater. I thought the difference in colors gives it character and you look great in it. As far as shawls go, I have all kinds of shawls and use them in different ways. The bigger triangular ones I like to drape over my shoulders when I'm a bit chilly but don't want to get too warm by putting on a sweater. The shallower, crescent shaped ones I like to use in the fall and spring in place of a cowl. I feel they cover my neck better and look pretty as well (especially lace ones). My favorite crescent shaped shawl is Fairyhill Shawl by Helen Stewart. I also quite like wraps in the winter. They are just giant scarfs. Anything by Ambah O'Brien for shawls or wraps.

I did get a pickle tickle this week! I learned to crochet first, so I always say I’m a beginner knitter, but this week I knit a triangle shawl! The increase was done by knitting into the pearl of the row below, instead of knit front and back. I had never seen that before. I found it on utube: Irina Revo named EASIEST knitted diagonal SHAWL. she even tells you how to style it! I think I’ll make more! Also I look for patterns of one skein shawls, because I go my local yarn shop and buy premium yarns on clearance, they usually only have one of any kind. I like to wear a shawl if I’m going somewhere wearing a dress.

I starting making shawls this year because I loved the patterns but like you wondered whether I'd ever wear them. I've found them soooo useful. I've put most of my jumpers away and have found shawls so good for wrapping round the shoulders in the house and also under lighter jackets. I wouldn't be without them now. The wrapping is so much cosier than a jumper, hard to explain you just have to find the right one. My favourites are the Be Simple shawl by Carolyn Glauz-Todrank (and it's YO variation) and Traigh by Kate Davies which is a really interesting hap shawl, enjoyable to construct, I'm going to make her Observatory Shawl next.
