I’m learning to watch this mind body pain like it’s happening to another self and to affirm to myself that I will get better. I know my inner critic can be relentless especially when I’m having a bad day . It’s like I have to remember this too shall pass and I’m training my brain that I’m ok by just keep going even when I hurt. Thanks for the video.

I have listened to this SO many times over the past 3-4 weeks, like Scripture I've read over & over, I get fresh revelation, Ah Ha moments, almost every time. And have shared with LOTS of friends & family. You often say you learn from your patients- You describe me perfectly as the one who is SO critical with self (and the sig other too) but SUPER compassionate with others... but am finding as I practice more compassion with myself, it is showing up in the relationship too. Collateral benefit! :-)

I am always surprised how those hooks effect my pain in a negative way. I enjoyed the seven day practice. Thank you Dr. Aria.

This is a new concept for me. This information makes me wonder if my inner critic could be the cause of my scoliosis. I was treated for scoliosis at 13 wore a brace and was in traction. No one in my family has scoliosis. I remember as a child continually being in a state of nervousness. I never seemed to be able to do things well enough for approval and acceptance from the people I needed it from. I had a sad childhood even though I had a safe and good parents

Hi there- to date, in general, there is no evidence that scoliosis is the main cause pain. It does not mean that it does not contribute, but in majority of people it does not -unless the degree of curvature change is very very severe and observable. That’s why I work closely with MDs. With that said, very often it’s one’s nervous system that’s the real culprit. When we experience chronic (traumatic) stress… That means… Pressures from outside, inside of us, and what’s in between us… Can really create our nervous system to be dysregulated, and thereby creating significant musculoskeletal/spine pain and other kinds of pain that’s difficult for traditional medical treatments to treat and to resolve. It sounds like the Inner Critic protects us from "mistakes" just like our brain protects us from "mistakes/danger" with pain signals. Am I understanding that correctly? I have been working the Curable modules and have learned so much but my pain is all over the map now and sometimes I am pain free and incapacitated with level 10 pain within a few hours on the same day! This is exhausting and tends to raise all the demons like the inner critic, thought distortions, fear....all the things my prefrontal cortex knows are counterproductive....but the urgency of the discomfort and the frustration caused by the random nature of its appearance ....and disappearance ...are exhausting and generate an involuntary cascade of catastrophizing and Inner Critic judgment around my inability to "master" this ongoing challenge. I feel defeated and this fuels the pain and the cycle of negative thoughts. I always go back to breathing and try to calm my nervous system but it often interrupts other important activites in my day, including work....I am an educator in special education....and renders me less able to regain calm even though I "understand" how my brain is going offline from the flight, fight, freeze, fawn response. How can I deal with these random incursions of pain every day more effectively to move toward more consistent "comfort" in my days?

Hi there-yes, the inner critic is actually a protector. The great news for you is that the fluctuation is a strong indicator of MindBody Syndrome. The inner critic (AKA, one of the many protectors inside of us) will continue, as with the pain (AKA, another protector), unless all these protectors (to keep it simple-your brain) will reduce or resolve the pain WHEN it feels SAFE. Look into your days when your pain/brain/inner critic... is worse...and you will find that they are all helping you shutdown because they don’t believe you will do the job of protecting them. Avoidance of something keeps them around. My recommendation: Get yourself a licensed provider listed in your state in the PPDAssociation.org and you have greater success. Alternatively, find an Internal Family Systens (IFS) provider to help you at: Ifs-institute.com. Best wishes, Les
