The Hidden Truth About Steroids & the Bodybuilding Supplement Industry | Jerry Brainum |
Спорт
On this week’s episode of the Escape Your Limits Podcast, our guest was the science editor of Muscle and Fitness magazine, an editor-at-large for Flex magazine, and a regular contributor to Ironman magazine for 28 years. His articles were the only articles read in bodybuilding magazines by 3-time Mr. Olympia champion, Frank Zane. He is the creator of Applied Metabolics, an in-depth newsletter about food supplements; exercise science; steroids, and much more.
Besides his writing, he has been a nutrition consultant for numerous elite, world-class athletes such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Oscar de La Hoya, and Vassiliy Jirov. He was also a competitive bodybuilder himself and trained alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger at the original Gold’s gym in Venice, California in the 70s.
Today, he spills nothing but the truth about:
• The biggest mistakes most bodybuilders make
• The myths, truths, pros, and cons of steroids
• And how a lot of safe supplements can have deathly effects

noticed that too love it
I have had the pleasure of knowing, working alongside and having a friendship with Jerry for close to forty years. He has consulted with many of my clients on supplementation and did many seminars together with my dad for my clients and staff, which were always well attended and very popular. My dad said that in the over fifty years he was in the business he had never met anyone who was as knowledgeable as Jerry Brainum. We had a lot of fun together working with the boxers. Every time I spend time with Jerry and hear him talk I always learn something new. I have learnt more from Jerry re supplementation and nutrition than anybody. A great interview Jerry you're a walking encyclopedia.

Jerry was the go-to guy for nutrition and super sups at Gold's back in the day because of his knowledge on the subject and he's still dropping truth bomb's this very day. Good guy and fantastic bodybuilder from the Golden age.
Have been reading his articles for decades. Jerry is an OG legend
Jerry is the man ! Been following him for years. Everybody should follow his KZread channel and seek any other interviews he's done with Generation Iron and other notable health n fitness channels. We deff need a part2. Way more to cover.

Holy crap, this is one of the most informational things I've seen/heard regarding supplementation and bodybuilding. Excellent, excellent work.
jerry has always been my go to for supplement information this interview was another level shows jerry at his very best
I have ADHD and I just watched the full video. What an interview!!
I'm a 63 y/o para in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, I spend most of my time in bed because of being paralyzed. I lose so much muscle from not being able to move any body part but my right arm. Now that the weather is getting better here in the Midwest I'm able to start exercising again. My family is amazed that with 4 workouts per body part, I'm able to contract and flex the muscle again. So it's never too late. But no BS it isn't easy at all. However, the muscles have come back somewhat and I feel better
Jerry Brainum is the source of the best information on nutrition and training.
This was a fascinating interview. His brain is still working great. Very knowledgeable.

I've been reading Jerry's work and listening to him for over 30 years now. Nobody in the business more straight-talking and knowledgeable in my opinion.
This is really an excellent interview. Thank you both.
I like how Mr. Brainum speaks the truth, including that elite athletes (sports or bodybuilding) use steroids. People love to see more home runs and pitchers who hit 100 mph plus fastballs, but no one wants to acknowledge how it’s done.

imo it should all be legal - make sure its a fair match for everyone. especially combat sports - if u got one guy fighting who is allowed to juice vs a guy who cant or wont = dangerous.
this is a man who knows his stuff - and is telling the truth. ALL SPORTS
Been following Jerry's writings since the 90s with IronMan. Very knowledgeable and offers so much
Jerry you are a total legend, such a great person!
I'm a scientist. This guy knows his shit. Unlike so many KZread "experts" act like they know the science but they really don't. I'm super impressed. Obviously he isn't a complete expert on everything, his understanding of recombinant DNA drugs was slightly off for example, but you can tell he KNOWS this and isn't reading a memo on his screen. The important takeaway is how he understands what we do NOT know, and how few studies, especially human studies, back certain things. This is the same skepticism used in real industry, when you aren't consumed by bro science.
Long interview but worth it. Learned a lot from him. Subscribing. Still lifting after all these years. Wish to maintain and keep😅brain health. Thanks Jerry
Prescriptions in triplicate for TRT: Do they do that for pain meds also? Did they? How long long have they been doing it for TRT? Are they more concerned about a population of beefed up men? Or are they more afraid of a generation of addicts? Do their Fed enforcement agents get a pads? Are they supplied? Have you ever seen those guys? Good gosh....
Been reading this man's articles for years, he has a wealth of knowledge.
Good Video, really enjoyed the video, learned several things, Thank You
I can literally listen to him for hours without ever skipping around the video out of bordem. It's like he'll like about something giving you a very important nugget of information that can potentially skyrocket your training into the next level then when you think that's the last secret he goes go to a new entertaining story about the history of bodybuilding and more invaluable information that can really change everything for your training. All of this was actually a pleasure to watch thank you.

Good luck with that. My dad knew a real old school diet meat eating egg eating lifter at his gym. Dropped dead in the shower at the gym of a heart attack at 68. My dad saw them cart his body out. “Poor Geirhart”, my dad said, “As they carted his cold wet body away, I remembered him saying, “I exercise and lift weights for four hours every day. I can eat whatever the hell I want.” Sure you can. But you’ll still have a heart attack.

Great video...jerry is amazing
Cortisol fuels the "fight or flight response" in human beings. If you were in a wild place and came across a dangerous animal or another dangerous human being[s] from an enemy tribe, you decided whether you should fight if you had a weapon and guessed you could kill the animal [for food] or kill the human enemy [not having to encounter them again], or to flee the animal or human enemy if you decided you couldn't win in a fight. The powerful spike of cortisol when in danger is what fuels that "fight or flight" response. Cortisol is what has kept the human race from becoming extinct.

I'm a fast responder to Testosterone. Low T my whole life. Hypogonadism. made 200ng/dl in my late teens/early 20's. Been on TRT for 20 years. almost 250,000mg of Test through my body. Prostate good. BP optimal. Cholesterol normal. Heart good. Brain good. I'm healthy AF. carry some extra weight due to my abnormally high cortisol and diet changes. 70 lbs of extra muscle on my frame. Strong as shit. If you have low t and eat healthy with even semi regular exercise, you could be ok.
