The Hidden Truth About Steroids & the Bodybuilding Supplement Industry | Jerry Brainum |

Спорт

On this week’s episode of the Escape Your Limits Podcast, our guest was the science editor of Muscle and Fitness magazine, an editor-at-large for Flex magazine, and a regular contributor to Ironman magazine for 28 years. His articles were the only articles read in bodybuilding magazines by 3-time Mr. Olympia champion, Frank Zane. He is the creator of Applied Metabolics, an in-depth newsletter about food supplements; exercise science; steroids, and much more.
Besides his writing, he has been a nutrition consultant for numerous elite, world-class athletes such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Oscar de La Hoya, and Vassiliy Jirov. He was also a competitive bodybuilder himself and trained alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger at the original Gold’s gym in Venice, California in the 70s.
Today, he spills nothing but the truth about:
• The biggest mistakes most bodybuilders make
• The myths, truths, pros, and cons of steroids
• And how a lot of safe supplements can have deathly effects

I have had the pleasure of knowing, working alongside and having a friendship with Jerry for close to forty years. He has consulted with many of my clients on supplementation and did many seminars together with my dad for my clients and staff, which were always well attended and very popular. My dad said that in the over fifty years he was in the business he had never met anyone who was as knowledgeable as Jerry Brainum. We had a lot of fun together working with the boxers. Every time I spend time with Jerry and hear him talk I always learn something new. I have learnt more from Jerry re supplementation and nutrition than anybody. A great interview Jerry you're a walking encyclopedia.

Now that the weather is getting better here in the Midwest I'm able to start exercising again. My family is amazed that with 4 workouts per body part, I'm able to contract and flex the muscle again. So it's never too late. But no BS it isn't easy at all. However, the muscles have come back somewhat and I feel better

I'm a scientist. This guy knows his shit. Unlike so many KZread "experts" act like they know the science but they really don't. I'm super impressed. Obviously he isn't a complete expert on everything, his understanding of recombinant DNA drugs was slightly off for example, but you can tell he KNOWS this and isn't reading a memo on his screen. The important takeaway is how he understands what we do NOT know, and how few studies, especially human studies, back certain things. This is the same skepticism used in real industry, when you aren't consumed by bro science.

Good luck with that. My dad knew a real old school diet meat eating egg eating lifter at his gym. Dropped dead in the shower at the gym of a heart attack at 68. My dad saw them cart his body out. “Poor Geirhart”, my dad said, “As they carted his cold wet body away, I remembered him saying, “I exercise and lift weights for four hours every day. I can eat whatever the hell I want.” Sure you can. But you’ll still have a heart attack.

Cortisol fuels the "fight or flight response" in human beings. If you were in a wild place and came across a dangerous animal or another dangerous human being[s] from an enemy tribe, you decided whether you should fight if you had a weapon and guessed you could kill the animal [for food] or kill the human enemy [not having to encounter them again], or to flee the animal or human enemy if you decided you couldn't win in a fight. The powerful spike of cortisol when in danger is what fuels that "fight or flight" response. Cortisol is what has kept the human race from becoming extinct.

I'm a fast responder to Testosterone. Low T my whole life. Hypogonadism. made 200ng/dl in my late teens/early 20's. Been on TRT for 20 years. almost 250,000mg of Test through my body. Prostate good. BP optimal. Cholesterol normal. Heart good. Brain good. I'm healthy AF. carry some extra weight due to my abnormally high cortisol and diet changes. 70 lbs of extra muscle on my frame. Strong as shit. If you have low t and eat healthy with even semi regular exercise, you could be ok.
