The Ending Of Seinfeld Explained

Ойын-сауық

The finale of Seinfeld remains controversial with fans to this day, as some were happy to see the four selfish characters end up in prison, while others thought it was an underwhelming way to end one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.
The episode took a risk by taking the four main characters out of their comfortable New York setting and into a small town, where they were seen for the outright jerks that they were, and the show’s final moments still have people buzzing to this day. Let’s take a look at the explanation of the ending of Seinfeld.

No. The characters didn't "deserve" jail time. Simply because they were seen as annoying which is essentially why they were given jail time and went to court. It was just another example of how ridiculous and unrealistic the show had become. And that was the reason Jerry killed it. The first four seasons were great and then it became a ridiculous clown show with completely unrealistic scenerios and 4 clowns just screaming all the time. All that was missing was the scene with all the characters coming out of a tiny car with Red bulb noses.

I liked the finale. I remember my mother being dumb founded by it and I was like, "Mom, the whole show was based around four complete self-centered a-holes but everyone was having so much fun it went totally unnoticed." She was like, "You know what, you are totally right." The series finale threw that in our faces.

She would've been seperated and placed with other females in the jail until DOC came and picked her up and took her to a women's only prison. And the guys could've very easily gotten separated and sent to different prisons too. Plus a year in prison would've ruined all their careers(with the exception of Kramer since he didn't have one to begin with, and possibly George since he would be fine just living with his parents) and basically destroyed their lives.

The ending was a masterpiece. Compare it to Modern Family's ending, which was all sentiment and tears. These characters had no place to go but jail. It was the only way to stop the mayhem (and it was mayhem, even if hilarious) they caused. The writers of the show were honest enough to acknowledge that. The best, most meaningful comedy involves characters who lack the skill set to perform a given task, but they obliviously try and try and fail again. Like Costello trying to figure out who's on first. That ultimately reflects our (tragic) human condition. The Seinfeld ensemble were characters who lacked the skills to succeed at almost any basic human relationships. It would have been a horrible violation of these wonderfully flawed characters, if they wound up with a group hug.

I worked for a cable company in 1998 and we had an outage DURING the finale. Our phones were getting straight ambushed with people holding "Seinfeld Parties" everywhere. I never heard so many downright hostile upper-middle class people screaming into a phone in my life. I was cussed out and called everything but a child of God. The local broadcaster re-aired it but the damage was done. We heard about it for years afterwards. Years later I became a huge Seinfeld fan from the reruns, so then I had much more empathy because there is a kinda weird, love-hate extreme attachment to the characters.

The best sit-com scenario is when dysfunctional people are *stuck* together. And the Seinfeld crew are at heart, really nasty people. In a normal American sitcom you would get episodes where they all come together and realise they really care about each other; George would go to hospital and they gather to support him; Kramer would disappear and they would get together and talk about how worried they are; Elaine would find the love of her life and get married, and they would all be at the wedding with tears in their eyes. Seinfeld didn't do that. These guys were F# ups, and they were stuck with each other, not because they were "best friends" but because no-one else in their right minds would hang around people like this for too long. It's one of the reasons George Costanza was and still *is* THE *greatest* sit-com character of all time. He's a fundamentally shallow, selfish, neurotic person, and he never stopped being one. And he is *glorious.* Having the gang stuck together in a cell, talking about nothing, was - for me - a genius way to end the series.

Fir the record, George wasn't trying to take back the tip. Since the guy behind the counter didn't see him give the original tip, he wanted to take it out and putt it in again when he was looking. Unfortunately, the counterman turned around just as he stuck his hand in the jar. Great episode. Watch it too get the whole story.

the use of the "button" line repeated from the pilot episode shows that the underlying message is more than just karma and justice.. being in prison behind bars is highlighting that they have all ultimately been imprisoned by their own minds. the psychological games and dualistic interplay has constantly prevented them from reaching their full potential.. the show for all it's quirky superficiality was actually able to use that first level of awareness to also communicate a deeper second layer or at times even a third layer of introspective subliminal communication..

The Seinfeld finale was a "clip show" - the arguments starts and ends with this. It was a freaking "clip show" !!!! Clip shows are usually done when writers are on strike, or to save money or some other non-sense. The PERFECT Seinfeld finale thankfully does exist - and that is the "backwards" episode!! You couldn't ask for a better finale where the last scene is Jerry meeting Kramer for the first time!

Notice how no season finale is good to most people and it’s because their favorite show is leaving them and now they have no idea what to do with their time. Seinfeld, Lost, Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Dexter, ext.. pretty much every show people have issue with yet love the series.

I can't speak for anything other than Seinfeld and The Sopranos, but I have to respectfully disagree. I think that most people don't like series finales because the shows are (usually) running on empty. Some shows (Monk, Breaking Bad) know when it's time to go and have great finales.

  • @beyondcomicstv
    @beyondcomicstv2 жыл бұрын

Believe it or not the reason why people did not like the last episode was from that last shot with the camera pulling out, that's a very sad depressing morbid camera maneuver used to indicate the destruction or Devastation or end or death of something as you slowly pull out and the people just float away into the distance. I'm surprised they didn't realize that that was the thing that made it feel emotionally depressing as an end, it was actually a clever idea to have them and the same conversation with how it began but the camera angle and Lighting and everything was in a more upbeat happy new beginning in the coffee shop or their apartment versus in a cold prison cell as if they are almost waiting to die even though they are supposed to get out in a year oh, so the audience feels that true goodbye ending or when you're in a car waving goodbye to somebody your perspective is your pulling away leaving them as they go off into the distance like when I used to wave goodbye to my grandparents in the backseat of the car as we drove off and they would get smaller and smaller as we pulled away which is exactly what that camera pullback represents.

I still think this was Larry David's final middle finger to NBC...he knew the episode was bad, he knew fans wouldnt like it, but he was still mad because the network kept the show going despite him leaving 2 years ealier, so he came back with the sole purpose of writting a shitty ending. You can see some "inside jokes" in the episode, like the jabs at NBC executives pushing for Elaine and Jerry to be a couple, or that the episode has a "lesson" by the end ("be nice or you are going to jail"), and the finale takes a giant dump in those two things Larry kept fighting NBC for 7 years. In the finale George and Jerry hug, Elaine tells Jerry she loves him, and by end, they "learned their lesson"...you think this was all a coincidence? It was Larry David telling NBC "here, have the show you always busted my balls to make"

Part of the distaste, I would bet, comes from some of the falling out the cast had gone through during the last two seasons. Jason Alexander and Michael Richards were very unhappy that they weren't going to see a dime from any future Seinfeld syndication. JLD probably would have also been upset if she wasn't already an heiress. Larry and Jerry didn't give them a sniff of money beyond their actors fees and it left things sour.

And, through it all not a one of them learned any lessons about life, not one of them became nicer, not one of them ever performed a selfless act, and not one of them ever showed remorse or guilt for wreaking the lives of others. Well, I guess they felt bad for all of 10 minutes until something shiny caught their eye.
