Seinfeld | 60 Minutes Archive

In 1997, Steve Kroft sat down with comedian Jerry Seinfeld, whose quirky television show about a handful of neurotic New Yorkers quickly became a ratings juggernaut. Kroft also spoke with the show's co-stars. This Sunday marks 25 years since the "Seinfeld" series finale.

    Met Seinfeld at a Dodger game, early on, when the show was called “The Seinfeld Chronicles”. He was walking through the concourse around the 7th, I called out ,Hey Jerrraaaaayyy, from about 20 feet away. He stopped, turned around, I told him I loved the show, we shook hands, he said thanks, we went our ways. Didn’t wanna bug him for an autograph and that was pre selfie. If it were to happen today, i’d play it the same way.

  • @MERCURYSUNSET

    @MERCURYSUNSET

    The writers created everything ? Jerry and Larry wrote 50 of the episodes . Every single other episode written by the other writers had to go through Jerry & Larry for the first 7 seasons and in seasons 8-9 after Larry left it was up to Jerry . Nothing passed through Larry or Jerry without them rewrites or tightening up scenes from those 2 .

    Exactly what Mercury said. I read a book by one of the writers - he actually was a comic, played the really boring guy who Elaine dated bc he couldn't remember her name, ended up on Raymond I think? Anyway, he said Larry told the writers to come to them with ideas about stuff that happened to them in real life and pitch them as storylines. They (I get the impression mostly this was Larry) would then workshop the ideas and create their A/B/C storylines from all these ideas. Then one writer would be assigned to doing the outline for the ep, but pretty sure Larry & Jerry actually then wrote all the dialogue. That's until as stated S8/9 where it was much more traditional sitcom writers room, which is no surprise while they contain some gems are responsible for 100% of show's few clunkers.

    @@tombonneau Cheers man .Spot on here .The fella you are referring to is Fred Stoller who was Elaine's forgetful boyfriend in "The secret code " ep . Fred wrote "The Soup " ep - the one where Bania gave Jerry an Armani suit . Jerry takes him out for dinner and Bania has soup . The other ep he wrote the Kramer and the chimpanzee incident subplot in "The face painter " ep . Yeah the dynamic of the show changed after Larry left at the end of season 7 became more absurd but in a good way . Seinfeld was Larry & Jerry's show with Jerry taking sole responsibility for seasons 8-9 .

    Mr. Seinfeld has really something to say. It´s inspiring to listen to him. Thanks for the great entertainment, that was like a good friend in many hours of solitude.

    And when Paul McCartney was being honored at the White House during the Obama administration - and Jerry was asked to do a few minutes as an intro... he kidded McCartney about the lyric "She was just 17... You know what I mean" - saying what did you mean, Paul...? Btw... Paul was just 19 when he wrote that song.

    he wasn't married, he didn't already have kids, like he says, he was kind of immature. And he has pretty good genetics and looks 10 years younger than his age. And to cap it off, they're still married and seem to have a solid marriage. So people need to get over it, stop being jealous.

    @@monkeyb1820 "they're still married"? who? Jerry and the college chick broke up the same year this interview was filmed. he married his current wife, whose 18 years younger than him rather than 21 years younger than him, a year or two later (after the woman completed her divorce from her new husband who she had just returned from their honeymoon with when she began dating jerry, of course)

    @@ereek5 sorry, I did mean to track down my comment. He did indeed break up with shoshana, got involved with Jessica (there was some drama there), but he and Jessica seem to have a strong marriage and mostly stay out of the limelight.

    The best show ever, at least since I have been alive. (Apparently there is a case to be made for M.A.S.H. as well, but that was before my time.) Something magical went right even beyond the excellent writing, though that was a very important factor. It must have been a wonderful experience to be involved with a project like that.
