I never thought Def Noodles needed to be held to any journalistic standards, but this is outright bullying from him. Def has a pattern doing that and a pattern of leaving out context to smear someone or mess up a story he's reporting on. And a pattern of his audience having to beg him to correct the story, beg him to try to understand, or beg him to pull tweets down. Kinda scary when someone like that seems to have a shaky moral foundation with a platform as large as his, while demonstrating no remorse or ability to learn / do better.

Nah, you can do satire that doesn’t land. You’ve just got to know what you’re satirising, know what satire is, understand the medium and platform you’re presenting your satire through, and not insist repeatedly to your audience that you’re being authentic. Sometimes satire just doesn’t register to some people, like some people don’t pick up on sarcasm, but the creator of the satire should be trying to present something satirically at the very least.

He quite literally said it depends on context, so it's the opposite of objectively funny. If something depends on context then it's not objective. I feel like a lot of real, sloppy internet drama comes from people who can't separate constructive criticism from personal attack and escalate it from there. In the first semester of creative writing, my professor didn't let the person who was getting feedback from the class talk until EVERYONE was done and even then you could only answer questions and explain confusion from the class. I think a lot of internet creators would benefit from just taking a breath when they want to escalate off of constructive criticism.

it was “John’s Peanut Gallery” channel, which got booted off YT shortly thereafter. i was there for that livestream and it was such a sh*tshow. to be fair, Tommy C was way worse than Nick. Nick was mostly being a devil’s advocate/contrarian, but Tommy was a screeching, hysterical mess. literally frothing and raging while Peanut (the host) was so calm and gracious. all emotion, no logic. so embarrassing, lmao. that was my very first introduction to those two dudes, and it was gross. in the year since, my opinion has warmed slightly on Nick because he *is* unquestionably smart, and raises very compelling points sometimes. it’s his delivery and attitude that are d-baggy, but that’s just his brand/persona. while i don’t always agree with his analysis, every once in a while, i will be curious and seek out his opinion on a particular situation, because at the very least, it will be interesting. the other thing i respect about Nick is that he is a formidable debate opponent who is excellent at sparring with others, whether or not you agree with his position. Nick v. Repzilla & Nick v. John Swan were incredible conversations to behold, and i found myself cheering for Nick in spite of myself. do i like Nick? no, but i don’t have to like him (or anyone, for that matter - all this stuff about “liking” people is juvenile, imo). i have definitely grown to respect him though, because he is really quite good at what he does. Nick earns his Ws because he’s good at reading people, and (for better or worse) fearless when it comes to confrontation. the first time i found myself agreeing with him, i laughed and thought “HEARTBREAKING: The Worst Person You Know Just Made a Great Point,” but over time realised he’s more than just a broken clock. his deft handling of Dennis’ manipulative attempt at a “gotcha” here was tactically brilliant. 10/10 (my opinion of Tommy remains unchanged, lol. he’s an unhinged rageclown who thinks that whomever shouts the loudest wins. 0/10)

@@pinguufuuuu SA survivor and true crime fanatic here! i’m 1000% with you that victim-blaming is absolutely unacceptable, however . . . if my memory serves me right, Nick did soften his stance and walk it back in subsequent videos/livestreams. i’m also not sure that his remarks actually constitute “victim blaming” so much as . . . just . . . skepticism at first? like, he wanted a lot more concrete evidence, and pointed out where it was lacking. his attitude absolutely rubbed me the wrong way, because as a survivor, i’m generally Team #BelieveHer by default. but i wouldn’t characterise Nick’s position as contra-Emily, and i truly don’t recall him ever stating or implying that any of this was Emily’s *fault* or that she was to *blame* for anything. there’s a difference between having an aggressive, abrasive personality and actively antagonising others, and i don’t think he did that to Emily. now, i don’t know if Nick ever *apologised* directly to her (i don’t think he acknowledges that he did anything wrong?) but i’m pretty sure there are no bad feelings between them. an apology/acknowledgment is always nice, but at this point it’s between them and none of my business or concern. you totally jogged my memory about his remarks re: last year’s Gabbie Hanna drama, and you’re right, he did have some bad and/or insensitive takes regarding the Jessi Smiles situation . . . but even then, i have to admit that Points Were Made. like . . . i can’t stand GH, but Nick’s defence of her re: the Bianca Devins situation was really fair and accurate, and opened my eyes to how rabidly eager drama commentators are to twist narratives deceptively and demonise the creators they hate (e.g., Repzilla, Angelika Oles et. al. aggressively pushing the “Murder Article” narrative, which was absolute nonsense). ultimately, i’m not particularly invested in any of these people, and don’t take KZread drama too seriously at the end of the day. i feel like i’ve already wasted too much time going to bat for this guy lmaoooo it’s so weird being in this position. anyway, just wanted to share my two cents! have a great day! 🌷✨

I think it's very unlikely that Def would win as I don't think he's proven he's suffered enough damages, especially since as a public figure, he has a higher burden of proof. Keemstar also has already been in a defamation lawsuit, so knows how it goes, and has a ton of money to hire a good lawyer. I will give Def one thing, which is that I'm sure there were people on Twitter who did take the accusation seriously since it is Twitter where all common sense goes out the window, especially if people weren't aware that Keemstar was satirizing Def's terrible coverage of the James Charles scandal. Did it damage Def's career like he's claiming? I don't think so; I think Def has done that pretty well himself. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

While I will not defend def noodles actions, Keem star absolutely was not being satirical when he accused def of grooming a 14 year old and claimed the victim might be ready to speak on the record. He only claimed it was satire after he was called out for presenting false allegations against def. I do think def has a decent chance at winning defamation, especially since keem admitted later he knew the statement was false when he made it, if def is being honest when he says he lost sponsorships because of the allegations. Satire doesn’t excuse you from defamation, which seems to be what keem and def both don’t understand.

I come back to this (very well made!) video a couple of times now and it made me think that here in Germany we actually have a moderator who is the ideal that Defnoodles strives to be: Oliver Welke moderates the sarcastic news of the Week in the “heute-show” (“The Daily Show” in English, which is also the original the show is based on). Welke is a satirical news moderator BUT at the same time he moderates in a serious fashion the soccer news, often on the same network. The reason this works is: because when he’s sarcastic, he’s sitting in the news studio and when he’s serious he’s out on the field. He never switches those places. Even though the studio looks like a serious news show, the website labels itself as sarcastic and humorous and it’s been like that from the beginning - so it’s clear that no actual, serious news are reported. Even though the content is not made to be taken seriously, it still follows the rules of journalism, so (ironically) people still take the criticism seriously. Accompanied is the show with multiple, professional comedians who themselves are well known and have established careers by themselves. (Welke himself has a magister degree in Journalism, Politics and German studies). So what Defnoodles is actually lagging, is consistency. (Because I believe even though the Internet is still not been taken seriously, it can be treated in a serious, journalistic way)

i feel like the word satire was killed off with leafy, that was the first place a lot of us, including me, heard that word for the first time and i used it wrong for a long time before being told like hey dude that’s not what this word means and i feel like that same thing happened to a lot of others so now there’s lots of people who think the word satire simply means “lightheartedly joking”, not saying that’s what leafy did but it’s what he was trying to say he was doing despite it being bullying, when satirizing something is so much different than that

Def was supposedly satirising Keemstar with the cat in the Minecraft house character, right? It makes no sense to me. I think maybe he was just trying to satirise KZread as a whole but that’s so broad that it gets lost in translation. I think he thought Minecraft KZreadrs and cats were big on KZread so that’s how he was going to parody a commentary youtuber, who he was mostly just making similar content as? The things he was saying seemed pretty in line with what other drama-commentary KZreadrs were saying, and some people even used him as a source in many cases, so the content didn’t seem over the top to me or to otherwise indicate it was satire. I don’t think Def had a strong grasp of KZread tbh. The character he was portraying wasn’t even that odd by youtuber standards. I watch a youtuber who claims she cowrites her videos with a cow, who unfortunately is never available to appear in the videos. D’Angelo Wallace wore cat ears while doing some serious commentary. Izzzyzzz has pretty unusual makeup and a bunch of Garfield merch in the background despite it usually being completely irrelevant to her content. Leftist creator Shaun, who makes pretty serious content in a pretty serious tone for the most part, represents himself with a skull because he was “reclaiming the skull” from the alt-right, and viewers talk about him like he’s actually a talking skull because that’s just a silly fun thing to pretend. When I watched Dennis doing the “cat in the Minecraft house” thing, I genuinely didn’t realise he was doing a character. I figured he probably just liked Minecraft, a game I wasn’t familiar with but it didn’t seem relevant to his content so I just put it out of mind since the background didn’t really seem relevant. I figured he liked the cat earphones because they were popular at that time. He wasn’t doing any skits or anything to indicate to me as a viewer that he was supposed to be a character, and references to being a cat came up so infrequently I figured it was just a throw away joke about his earphones. He could’ve at least drawn some whiskers on, phandom-style, or gone more furry with the look, at least put on a cat onesie, maybe got some paw gloves or something. Perhaps some little skits at the beginning and end to communicate he was in character as a cat. Idk, I just was surprised when he announced he was moving away from the cat in the Minecraft house character. I had no clue what he was talking about lol. Then he started making more aggressive content that heavily focussed on Keemstar, a man who I don’t need daily updates on from a shouty man. Dennis also started swearing so much that I, an Aussie, thought it was incredibly over the top. He kept ranting angrily about the same things (mostly Keemstar) and getting mad at people who complained about the change. He kept insisting that this was his authentic self and he was no longer in character, which was ironic because he was coming across as the perfect parody of that genre of commentary channel (super repetitive content focusing on the same individual, unnecessarily loud and aggressive over petty stuff, can’t take criticism, insists he’s just being real, etc). However, I guess some time after I stopped watching he’s switched back to claiming it’s a character? So strange. I’ve no clue what is and isn’t meant to be authentic with him. I don’t think he understands satire very well. Stephen Colbert was clearly very familiar with the news he covered, the people he was satirising, and the satire genre. Def’s satire falls flat because he doesn’t know anything about anything. I think KZreadr News does a better job at what I think Def may have thought he was doing tbh. But I’m not sure what Def was trying to do so maybe not. KZreadr News reports on KZreadr news (I know, shocking) but they just give basic summaries like Dennis does, except they’ve also got running gags and clearly don’t take themselves too seriously. Eg, they used to have “Dan Howell watch” as a running gag where they’d just make up absurd stories about what Dan Howell was up to, and they have a toy rat who I guess is like a cohost canonically but it’s also part of some silly storylines (they supposedly ran against each other for the presidential election, then were competing together for Eurovision). They’d also do a question of the week where they’d ask a ridiculous question or ignore the answers from the previous week, which served to parody when KZreadrs do that more seriously. So there are some over-the-top bits, but it’s very clearly different to the regular news stories and usually presented as part of clearly differentiated segments. When they are reporting on something more serious (like SA accusations), they adopt a more serious tone that stands out clearly from the usual silliness. I think something like that is perhaps what Dennis tries and fails to achieve, but he’s so bad at presenting his satire I legit don’t know which elements of his content were supposed to be satire or what he was even supposed to be satirising.

[EDIT: just adding that the rest of my comment was made before his tweets and video. For those who don't know he's now confessed to being 37. There's also evidence of him telling at least one journalist he was in his 20s, so it's not just that he never confirmed anything - he has lied. Tho he claims it was because his agent told him to say he was 10 years younger to get acting roles. Again, the whole thing is just kinda silly drama to me and he's done way worse things imo, but I wanted to add an update] Not gonna lie I went on a bit of a deep dive with the "what's his actual age?" thing and I can't find anything that points to him actually being 27 right now. All his past work and interviews makes it very clear he's older than that, unless his entire internet presence prior to Def Noodles was one big lie - which doesn't seem very likely to me based on the type of work he's done in the past. The interesting thing is though, I've not been able to find anywhere where **he** explicitly mentions his own age (if anyone can I'd love to see it), which is kinda strange. BUT, he also loves to reference the Vulture interview and in there they say he's 27 (25 at the time) + he's replied to videos that say he's in his 20s and he's never corrected that info. Even Keem's motion to dismiss says he's 27, so it has to originate somewhere. Like, that age didn't just appear out of nowhere online, you know? Idk, the whole age thing is kinda silly and at the end of the day doesn't really change how I feel about his actions or anything, but I'm also very nosey so I wanted to see what I could find agashjskd

Okay, so I watched this all (I made my first comment after having to pause from breaking my brain from laughter). -You made a great point at the fire hydrant stuff. Like that's just ripping stuff out of his ass. He knew what he was doing. -Commentary guys tend to come off as extremely dismissive and condescending to channels they think are drama channels because they ultimately don't want to "lower themselves" to actually listening to the type of people they wouldn't normally associate with. It's kinda like the "commentary" guys are the boys that tell girls "ew I don't wanna play with your toys!!" It's ultimately a fear of COOTIES. - maybe I just get legit triggered by Def because he talks like the condescending old men in my life that automatically treat me like I'm a stupid child. I think it's because he has the same tactic as them of "IM TALKING LOUDER THAN YOU SO THEREFORE IM RIGHT. IM MAKING YOU UPSET?? YOURE WEAK. IM BIG BRAIN." -I personally live by the motto of let your shit speaks for itself or shut the hell up 😌💅 so if Def was a real comedian, I feel like he'd know that.

As a drama/tea channel girlie I don't watch commentary bros because of their condescension and occasional flirting with the alt-right (why are so many of them like this). The commentary channels I watch are usually disembodied voices with a cartoon avatar or women

Not def trying to say ANYTHING is objectively funny. Even some people don’t find farts funny. NOTHING comedy is objective. Comedy is PURE subjectivity. Since dennis is such an established comedian you’d think he’d know 💀

Oh my god... I used to watch Blossom in the earlier days of her channel and fell off her content around the time of The Discord Happenings ☠☠ dude that must have been so stressful to deal with. Im genuinely so shocked by how she devolved, I liked her initially because she was a mh professional (supposedly) but as she made more content she spiraled totally. Wild... Anyways I hope school is going well, good luck with your modules and thanks for the video!!

Tried to edit and deleted my comment. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’ve been watching Defs follower account the last week. It’s gone from 588K to 582K in that time. It’s sad that he won’t even do a fake “KZread” style apology. It’s his own audience that’s upset with him.

mika going off!!! def goes so back and fourth between 'i'm just internet thing!' and 'this is journalism!' whenever it benefits him. he's click bait with an ego. acting like he admits he's wrong but never...actually does. dear god i never knew he compared himself to colbert...that's painful. knowing your free time was put to this...i am so sorry...ki has had to listen to me yell about dennis so many times...gotta have some uncensored bitching whenever we cross paths next lol (ki was SO SAD she wasnt in conversation mode last time). being in my 30s and keemstar being a thing SINCE I WAS A TEEN is so painful. can not stand the guy...horrible dude. he may not be serious but he...has done a lot of damage and doesn't give a shit. he's an easy dude to try and band people around hating at least helloleesh's gabbie videos mostly came from being on the receiving end of her fandom for a good while iirc. can the idea she's allowed to talk about gabbie because of that experience lead to one too many videos? sure! but for the most part i can at least understand adding to the conversation about her fanbase and how they treat people she talks about.
