miiasaurous and public perception

Ойын-сауық

miisaurous, a storytime youtuber turned commentary channel, recently made two apology videos for the content they made in the past. The videos have received some fair criticism and I thought it would be a good time to look into what exactly the criticism was about.

the weird thing about this situation is when i first watched her channel i though that she *was* half black because she would refer to herself as biracial while using the blaccent without clarifying her racial identity (at least in the vids i saw), so i mistakenly assumed that she was entitled to use that kind of speech because of her family/upbringing. i kind of dropped off watching her bc i had an issue with the way shed simplify certain issues or talk about things while clearly not doing enough research, but i was honestly surprised when i started hearing about this controversy...

I think if you know what you're doing is wrong, then it's definitely wrong. If for two years you are looking for excuses and reasons, then you're just trying to justify your bad behavior (and for two years at that!). While your brain isn't fully developed at that time, relying more on emotions rather than rationality... which definitely was encouraged by immediate gratification and KZread, plus as Mika said, getting super popular super young can delay mental/personal growth... obviously it was developed enough to acknowledge that she was in the wrong. Without properly changing, learning, and then growing who you are as a person (which can only be shown with time), at that age (I believe she is 22) it's not really excusable in my opinion. Could Miia change and learn in the future? Yes, absolutely. She isn't fully developed as a person and she obviously has a lot of things she needs to work through. But just because you grow, learn, and change, does not necessarily mean you have to be (or should be) forgiven or just given a pass. Also, as a mixed race person myself... honestly there's a lot of privileges but there are also a fair amount of downsides. In my experience, it is both way easier and harder, just in different and unique ways (especially depending on how/where/when you were raised).

I remember watching a few of her videos in quarantine bc I enjoy long form videos and social commentary. You’re right, her videos did follow a certain formula, down to her thumbnails and video titles. I believe her videos got… strange, for lack of better words, is when she started making commentary videos and solely put Black women in the thumbnail and title (Meg, Doja, Rihanna). For anyone who has been on KZread for years, you know that it’s a major strategy for people to click and engage in a bashing session for 30 min and then go about their day. So yeah, none of her videos seemed to be in good faith and only were to jump on an idea that was “trendy” or had been spoken about by other well-spoken creators. I think she realized maybe from burnout or a drop in stats that this format was no longer sustainable. I’m a first time viewer bc I’d been searching videos talking abt this, you said so much of what I’ve been thinking!!! It is W I L D to me that no “big” commentary / content review channels are talking abt this when they all beat the Creepshow Art thing to death and that was someone w a considerably smaller sub count than Miia. I have so many thoughts on this situation I’m prob going to forget to mention all of them lol, but I agree w everything you’ve said - sry this is gonna be an essay: I used to struggle w telling lies when I was a teen, it was for a similar reason as Miia mentioned ie having an unstable and kind of embarrassing home life and wanting my life to seem better / wanting to deflect from my circumstances. However, a) the stuff I lied abt did not involve others b) they were nowhere near this harmful or grandiose and c) I wasn’t lying on a platform of over a million subscribers, I was lying to a small number of people in everyday life. Towards the end of my HS years I realized I was just lying bc I didn’t like myself / my life and I wanted to start over and be completely genuine / authentic w people, and thru therapy I was able to work thru the root of my issue and thankfully I went on to university to make new friends in an honest manner. Now I legit never even tell white lies and I’m glad abt it. Bc of my experiences I can have empathy w her to a very small extent, but once again even I never lied on the scale she did or abt such harmful things as she did. A horrifying amount of people have mentioned that Miia normalizing sugar daddy stuff or normalizing drugs led them to participate in sugar baby sites (putting them in direct danger of being taken advantage of by men) or try hard drugs, like that’s terrifying??? What stuck out to me is that Miia mentioned she started therapy for this issue 2 years ago - but she still continued lying constantly??? She lied abt doing ecstasy in her Euphoria vid that was only a few months ago. I agree w Voodoo Child’s vid, I feel like she might’ve only come clean bc someone from her irl life was going to expose her for this stuff. Who knows if she has actually been seeking therapy for this as long as she claims she has. What’s craziest to me is that she has just immediately jumped back into commentary vids, like how are you going to continue a career of calling people out for being fake and lying when you yourself have done that? Would you not roast someone who did the exact same thing as you? She clearly thinks she can just continue her YT career like nothing happened bc she needs the monetary revenue but it’s like, girl just get off the Internet and find a diff job while you take time to reflect and change. It’s especially WTF bc her first vid back was on Sienna Mae, like you’re gonna make a vid abt harassment and assault when you admitted to lying abt a relationship w a teacher???? I would simply not show my face online again for at least a yr, maybe if she did take that much time off I could believe her eventual comeback was genuine. I honestly thought she’d take time off but nope. Everyone praising her for the bare minimum of coming clean is just enabling her.

i’m only like halfway through the video, but i wanna give some potential explanations from a psychological perspective. overall i have the same opinion, her apology was wack and she needs to get help. there were some things i thought that were motivated by something else. i’m about to enter grad school for research psychology, so id like to think i have some experience lmao- first i think people, mostly, categorize behavior based on their own personal experience. even if they think they’re being unbiased, it’s hard not to be unless you’re specifically trained that way. all psychology students make the same comments, “don’t address sensitive mental health situations because you will get it wrong” psychology is such a convoluted science because you have to know the big picture to understand where the little details come from. it’s like picking a few sentences in a book, and then just guessing the story based on those sentences. and you won’t understand it unless you’ve already read the whole book. so please don’t take advice or anything really from someone who has no experience. even me, i’m still in school i don’t know everything, and i won’t touch on the things i’m not familiar with. i could be totally wrong but i think it’s important to keep an open mind. luckily my subcategory is psychoanalysis, so this is what i usually do anyway lmao- i think your assumptions are correct but for the wrong reasons. she kept focusing on how all of this has affected her, and that’s obvious to anyone. if it’s true that she has a debilitating disorder, i don’t think it’s a sign of her being untruthful. its human nature to be selfish even in normal circumstances, so when someone’s dealing with something negative, that selfishness will probably increase. this is the biggest reason why i think she shouldn’t have made this apology. it’s something that wouldn’t be bad in any other situation, but when people are affected by it, it becomes harmful. i think her rambling and stalling is most likely because it’s embarrassing. i’m actually a little surprised no one picked up on that, but it’s very hard to confess to doing something bad. especially when there’s no excuse to give. imagine doing something like that and then having to admit it to millions of people. i think it’d be weird if she was completely calm and composed because that would suggest she doesn’t think anything she did was wrong. simply cause it was unedited. seeing someone describe awful things they’ve done concisely with a straight face is very unnerving. again she shouldn’t have made the videos because it makes her look worse, regardless of her intentions. she shouldn’t have mentioned anything about her disorder because it’s not an excuse to do the things she did, and the things she did aren’t things representative of BPD. this is a little hard to explain but, when someone has a disorder it’s like a film over their true nature. and that disorder will affect people differently depending on how they are naturally. if you’re a naturally selfish insensitive person your disorder will be a projection of that. especially personality/mood disorders. this is just an example but i’ve been diagnosed with ocd since i was 9. im naturally someone who cares too much about the well-being of my close friends and family, so my obsessions revolve mostly around that idea. if you’re naturally a selfish insensitive person, that’ll probably be amplified by the disorder. especially if it’s something hereditary. we don’t really think of anyone as “good or bad” because we’re trained to treat everyone equally regardless of their issues. most people assume we’re excusing someone because we don’t condemn them to hell, but you’ll most likely get that from everyone who works in mental health fields. which again is why people with no knowledge of these subjects shouldn’t speak on them. it takes a certain level of detachment to accurately assess someone’s state of mind. your psychiatrist might seem like an insensitive prick because their job is to treat you based on their own opinion. and you’ll most likely be encouraged to get second opinions because it’s hard to be completely unbiased. a lot of people who have no idea what they’re talking about will usually present the person or disorder in a negative light which is so very dangerous. presenting them in any light is dangerous but especially negative because it can lead to people thinking they’re less than or don’t deserve to get better. which sets us back like 50 years lmao we really don’t want that. you can condemn their actions, but putting that onto the person specifically isn’t a good idea. unless they’re like a pedo of a serial killer. even having a disorder doesn’t make you qualified to speak about other people with the same disorder. just having a bit more empathy for other people and our future in general would be nice. you might think what you say isn’t that serious but there are people who will take it seriously. talking about people’s person struggles is a sensitive subject, which is why you should treat it as such. also this is like addressed generally, not to mika specifically! most people have good intentions when talking about these things, but it can backfire if it’s not handled correctly. i just want people to get help lmao a lot of people are too ashamed of themselves to get help and it’s because of how the media portrays them. it’s really sad to think of someone in that situation, and i hope eventually it’ll change.

I probably watch an older black community on YT, but Mila is nothing like any of them. They for instance, have extremely strong arguments for their points, and calmly spend the video explaining those points. Mila is copying a fake stereotype mainly for me. Black YT from my experience, is the most reasoned and intellectual corner of YT. I am a scientist and working towards my doctorate, and "science" YT is far less reasoned and intellectual than Black YT from what I have seen. I watch almost entirely black female creators, but I think that works fine here.

man i hate not understanding tone bc i'm autistic. i've learned to think that people are genuine when they do certain things, when they use their voice a certain way. same with sarcasm, but ultimately the information that enters my brain are the words that are said by the person, not the way those words are told. so when someone tells stories i gobble it all up because i don't have the innate thing that allistic people have when they can clock disingenuous people and liars. i take everything literally so if you tell me something i'm going to believe you because i guess my brain doesn't understand how and why people lie (or use sarcasm, troll, irony, etc). i'm not a native english speaker so i put my thoughts of her having a blaccent and it being weird on "i'm white, its not really my place to call it out and it could just be a regional accent that i don't know", and believed her stories. i felt dumb when she said she lied about everything because i was like "of course! i should have known! i know by know most storytimes are fake." and in her confessing video, she came across as distressed and i interpreted it as "she's distressed that she hurt people"... seems like i was wrong again 🤦‍♀️

No one can truly tell whether or not another person is genuine just by vocal inflection. Tone and melodic phrasing have nearly nothing to do with whether or not a person is being genuine. Also, I wanted to say I'm learning a new language and I am having a very hard time learning the inflections, especially with comedy. I feel like I've lost my humor, in a way. When you've become used to your native language, it feels jarring to switch to anything else. Most of us had no idea Mia was lying, don't beat yourself up over it. Even IF someone had a suspicion, that's not enough to make a definitive decision (until evidence is presented).

Like I've said in another comment section on this whole thing: I'm realizing that the reason my love for her content declined, was because I was maturing and starting to understand people can make up their entire lives online. When she began switching her content to match up more w commentary rather than storytimes, I think I lost interest because she had this fake persona online. That works when your content style is storytimes, because you can lie about it all, and still come off as genuine to a younger, more gullible audience. But when that audience begins maturing, and you switch to content where you actually have to show parts of the real you to keep up the interest, that's a problem. With commentary, you have to have opinions. Parts of your personality can be seen through the opinions you have on topics. Issue here is, she couldn't really do that. She had to use the lies she told about her life, and factor them into her opinions, i.e she had to use the supposed "experiences" she had, to explain why she had the opinions she did when doing commentary. And I think her trying to do that, while I was starting to mature and realize how the internet works, had me unknowingly lose interest, bc I couldn't really feel connected to her like I used to. Her jokes began feeling like an inside thing I wasn't clued in on, and I often felt like she was overly animated or idk, robotic, just kinda.. distanced in her videos. I used to feel like she showed so much passion in the way she talked when doing storytimes, it felt like we were sitting in the same room, dishing out scandalous tea w eachother. She seemed so much more genuine to me back then. Idk, maybe I'd think differently about that if I was watching it back today. Point is, her content started feeling off to me. And it can't be bc I just don't enjoy commentary as much as storytime videos, because I've stopped watching storytimes all together. I only watch true crime and commentary. So it wasn't like she stopped making the content I preferred, actually, I should've began falling back in love w her content if we're being logical here. But she just.. she felt off, as I grew older. And I think it has to do with the fact that I matured, as she got into a style of content where u have to have some personality shine through to keep the audience's attention, not realizing that this conflict made her seem less relatable than ever. But idk. I don't wish anything bad on her still though, I just hope she gets help if that's what she feels she needs as a natural next step, and that it works out for her, so she doesn't ever pull some shit like this again. But then again, I'm also very aware of the fact that I'm not part of any of the minority groups she's hurt, except for sx workers. But idk, that part didn't really hurt me personally, so I won't speak on it more, bc my opinion isn't productive to the convo, nor do I have enough knowledge for my opinion to be taken seriously. Anyway, if u read all of this: thanks, ily, u beautiful, stubborn and dedicated person. Hope u have a good rest of ur day, u deserve the world.

I saw these videos in passing but never watched them bc like…while I watched some of mia’s videos and liked them, the more I watched, the less I liked her, which is not really what you want as a content creator. It wasn’t anything terrible that made me dislike her, just that she said the same jokes, spoke very quickly and loudly (like it felt like she was at a shouting level?), and did this fake laugh that was so weird to me. I always thought of her as a small creator, so I was kind of surprised to see this being covered, but I’m very happy about it bc I find your channel to be much more pleasant to listen to & appreciate your summary/analysis!

Thank you for the covering this! I have watched miiasaurous but did not watch her apology videos she posted. I didn't even know why she was in heat or whatever.

thank you so much for your thoughtful commentary. after watching both her videos it was a little off-putting how positive all the comments were, as if she didn’t center herself many times and drag on the conversation to grasp at straws for forgiveness. i feel like it’s important to note as well that she posted a new video about sienna mae only about a week after the last video was posted

Aquafina is an actress - she played the best friend in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Seven Rings. She was also the voice of Sisu the dragon in Raya and the Last Dragon
