The Crusades: Part 2, 35 Years of Chaos, Assassinations, and Madness

I struggled with what to call this installment of the Crusades series. I was thinking "The Crusades: Part 2, OMG" or "Part 2, WTH." Or even "Part 2, Does Leadership Matter?" In Part 2, we see the leadership of the Seljuk Empire try time and time again to overcome the Crusaders. Bad luck, cowardice, sloth, alcoholism, madness, narcissism, and the pursuit of self-interest all conspire to give the Crusaders win after win, despite several catastrophic setbacks.

That makes a lot more sense. In many cultures, individuals or entire families have often been named after their father's or patriarch's profession. Ibnul Khash-shaab might be a better transliteration, to help non-Arabs pronounce the shadda.

I have listened to all of his lectures. I may not be studying history or politics, but I'm thrilled to return home and listen to him after a long day of work. I have a deep passion for philosophy and human history, and Dr. Roy brings out the true essence of history for me. I've always been frustrated with the distorted version of history we were taught in school. I'm genuinely envious of his students who have the opportunity to sit there and listen to his brilliant lectures in person. Nevertheless, I am extremely grateful to have access to them online. I eagerly await the next lecture, filled with anticipation. Thank you so much for that! By the way, the book Artemisia (The Blood Throne) was absolutely fantastic. Well done!

There's no way in hell a major studio or production company would let this touch the surface, a least not like this.. His raw allusive nature of the lectures and his emphasis on such key points throughout history, foreshadow our illusive reality. History always repeats itself, our current existence is just proxies on proxies on proxies on proxies and so forth. His dissection and disentanglement of "modern" day rice-a-roni politics would not gain support from corporations or the audience. That's why people still watch/follow/read the news. They want to be entertained. They want to absorb what makes them feel 'right' and 'justified' (very distinctive btw).

The word empire is one of the products of modernity. The East, especially the Arabs, did not define themselves as an empire. Likewise, the legitimacy of rule among the so-called empire is based on the application of Sharia, and therefore legitimacy is derived or based on the extent of the application of religion = Sharia. Therefore, in my humble opinion, the most correct name is the caliphate. I recommend reading the works of Dr. Wael Hallaq: The Impossible State and Sharia. Thank you so much Sir for having lectures like as it may help to reset the mindset of those people who hate Muslims in the west particularly in USA, Germany, UK, France, Sweden so on and so forth. By listening on here would enlighten their hearts to understand that Muslims were not mass murderers not exterminators but the crusaders do. crusaders killed as many people as they can, roasted the people and ate them and they did not have mercy toward killing babies and elderly. such kind of cruelty had made them extraordinary criminals.

Turks indeed had a decisive role in triggering historical major events like the Migration Period, Crusades, shaping the history of Balkans, Islamization of Northern India, Age of Discovery as well as ending the Middle Ages with the conquest of Constantinople, fall of the Roman Empire.

Hi It was amazing like always! Can’t wait for next part. Although There are some points that I wanted to mention about Hasan al Sabbah or Hasan-e sabbah and his fallowers, widely known as Hashashin. I guess you know theme well but it could be interesting for audience. He was an Iranian that posed as Shia. But in fact, his main goal was to weaken Islam’s Influence in Iran by making division and anarchy. The well-known name: Hashashin was not in fact due to their use of hashish. But their drug business. One of their main sources of income to sponsor their activity, was exporting Drugs. Including Willow plant extract known as best disinfectant and sedative at the time. Hence the name Hashash or pharmacist The Assassins where a division of them called: Fadaee or devotee. They were willingly castrated to be focused only on their mission. No family... No love ...no ambition. There are several books about Hassan and his followers. But due to their secrecy, they will always remain a mystery…

Ok yes it was an Arab empire but it was only through Islam that it reached its zenith so doesn’t that make it an Islamic empire? The other empires were not really (truly) based on religion but rather nationalism and material gains. That’s why lands governed under Islamic rulers had much more freedom and as you mentioned before, they were not coerced into faith.

Dr Casagranda thank you. It’s been a joy to listen to your lectures on the Middle East. One thing though and this is something a lot of people get wrong: the assassin cult were not called the Hashashin. They were called the Qassassin - the cutters. To cut in Arabic is ya’quss’. And as you evidently know, Egyptians drop the Qaaf letter and pronounce it as the A. The point being that it’s highly unlikely that a fanatic religious sect would use hashish and become doofuses. They’re more likely to be called ‘cutters’ because they can chop their enemy in two. Hope you get this.
