I agree , dates can always be looked up when in writing a paper or during a panel of debate or topic of intrest tha may include dates for a specific time of important event and supports the argument ,( case ) .

Of course he should but at the same time that’s not saying much. The Dark Ages in Europe was a period characterized by profound ignorance. That includes military strategy/tactics. There were a lot of brave men and there were a lot of stupid men.

@@doedelzak3914 whatever man. Europe went backwards after the fall of the Roman Empire, burned books, there was only one book that mattered: the Bible. No scientific or technological advancements for 1000 years until the Rennaisance. You can see the utter lack of sophistication reflected in their military tactics when they fight outsiders. The knights were awesome fighters individually because they trained that way, for tournaments and whatnot. They had zero ability to fight together, as a unit. Battle of Legnica, Battle of Mohi River, Battle of Nicopolis. They were clueless as to how to achieve success as a cohesive army. Or how about the First Crusade (the People's Crusade)? Nearly 100% eliminated by the Seljuk Turks.

Imagine a king that swings a battle ax while leading his troops. Richard truly was a great commander and warrior

He was a great warrior but arrogant. It cost him his liberty and bankrupted England all because he was ungracious to those who helped him win his battles. On his return he was kidnapped and held for ransom. Sounds a bit like today.

Ya I agree, no other leader came to help Saladin but he did receive reinforcements. Like the time his army retreated and he raced ahead the get food and supplies ready for them, shows the type of guy he was. Richard had funds granted. But to travel so far in the time that it was and to put up a solid fight was impressive. Both had respect for each other. So sad that the holy land is still being fought over.

I visited the castle at Acre two years ago, I was walking around there thinking at the enormity of the task of taking a fortied city like that… the walls are like 20 metres high surrounded by a trench and another wall, its insane to think men on wooden ladders had to scale that while being attacked from above… those men were tough. Wish I could share the photos I took here 😢

King Richard !!! Such a badass

Hey my brother I must say I truly enjoy your history research narrative and expository telling. The fact that you pronounce place names correctly as they were called in that time period shows the depth and accuracy of research you bring to your program and each individual episode. I especially appreciate your understanding of the relationship between Richard and Saladin. Given my understanding of human nature I would venture to say they both the respected and appreciated each other more than they did their backstabbing half-stepping countrymen and so-called allies. Yeah both of them were betrayed by their so-called allies, Richard by French allis and Saladin by his Emirs . I do believe both of those leaders were men of God following their God the god of their understanding to the best of their ability with honor and chivalry. I salute your effort as a historian and truly appreciate what I see plainly and clearly as your labor of love. Bon vie Mon ami 😊

By the "Capetian King", the Plantagenêt were technically French too (or Frankish to be exact), the concept of nationality did not exist back then. A huge part of Richard's army was from Duchies and Counties in France too. And Phillip II left 10 000 men under the orders of Guy III of Burgundy.

A really exciting narrative. I realise how strange our vision of nationalities for these characters is . "King of France" : "France" is only a region around Paris; this part speaks french....but the rest speaks provencals, flemish (Belgians or netherland ?) , Lorrain (oh ! maybe they are german !). Richard king of England...but his mother and his father were fren....oh no ! they spoke occitan. He had probably a high number of occiitans than Brittish in his army as he ruled over twice more "french" than "english". Guy de Lusignan speaks french, i believ but he is the former king of ...Jerusalem. The only thing that counts is the title, the higher they had and it is not representative of todays geogrphy. Ah never forget that all these guys are rivals .

....or England is a part of the Plantagenet possessions. They come from Anjou and Aquitaine and were dukes and counts there before reigning over England. Henri II is born in Fance (Le Mans) Alienor grew at Bordeaux and is buried at Fontevrault, Richard is born at Oxford, but he died in France and is buried at Fontevraut too. Did they speak english ? Just bribes. England, France has no sense at this period . I know history.

36:40 Richard did not kill the prisoners because Salahuddin refused any payment or pice of true cross. Those were other parts of negotiations. Richard killed them because he calculated the cost of feeding and watching the prisoners to be unbearable. He killed the prisoners of war for logistical issues. The Lion Heart.

There is a risk freeing an enemy. Which is that they would most likely regroup with rest of army and then attack again.

The fact that Saladin, on home field, couldn't defeat the malnourished and ill-supplied English goes to show that he was never a great military leader. The "Christian" nations were their own worst enemies.

@@enthusiast0 I've stood where these battles took place. I've done my homework. There were many factors at play, many of which were explained. Still, my comment stands. The invaders had to cross the seas resupplying troops and supplies. Saladin had massive advantages in practically every category and still was incapable of expelling a malnourished and ill-supplied force.

Third crusade was a draw in my opinion. Whereas the Christians won the first and Muslims the second, both parties achieved success in the 3rd. Barbarossa whooped the Seljuks and Lionheart bested Saladin twice due to superior tactics and leadership. But the ultimate prize of Jerusalem was still in Muslims hands, so the crusade was only a partial success.

@@ridwanzakifaisal Nope. You'd like to believe that, but Christians won all the major engagements in the third crusade. Barbarossa crushed the Seljuk Turks twice forcing them to give up their capital and Richard the Lionheart won 3-0 against Saladin at Acre, Jaffa and Arsuf - in all of those battles except for siege of Acre Muslims having numerical superiority. Just to make things clear - Christians were not defeated in ANY engagement of third crusade be it an ambush, siege or open battle. Third crusade did not secure Jerusalem, but it secured entire coast from Tyre to Acre, re-established strong position of Crusader kingdoms and recaptured Cyprus placing it in hands of templar orders. It also managed to chastise Turks in Anatolia greatly for decades and reaffirmed Byzantine Empire through this proxy. In contemporary historiography it has been painted as inconclusive, but modern historians given above start to depict as the Crusaders' success. I'm not sure how given all facts you can say Muslims won anything in it.

@@terro3842 Lionheart was 2-0 against Saladin. Don't give him too much credit at Acre as it was Guy De Lusignan who ordered the construction of the defences and dug in to avoid the Christians getting stomped. Lionheart and Phillip II came in at the end with fresh supplies, but Guy was the man of the hour. Jaffa to me was a skirmish, despite what Lionheart lovers say. Arsuf on the other hand was a clear victory for the Christians due to superior unit usage, namely the Hospitallers.

Kinda. Barbarossa defeated a disunited Seljuk force. Kilij Arslan had agreed to let Barbarossa march through Anatolia because the Seljuks had been playing at diplomacy with the Christians at the time, there's even a popular myth that Kilij Arslan and Barbarossa were distant cousins, but the Sultan's son disagreed and a civil war broke out. Barbarossa essentially took advantage of the situation. I mean, that is still really impressive, but still a bit nuanced.

Men became beasts?? People forget, the crusades was a response to beasts aggression. It wasn't the initiative, it was the response.

@@origami83 are they not allowed to attack enemy combatants when storming a city? I mean we still defend those who do the same thing today in Europe. But they aren’t Chr - WAIT I SEE WHY YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM NOW!

@@jacklaurentius6130 Do you have problems reading, where did i say that they cant kill combatants? They burned entire cities to the ground on their way to the levant when the cities refused to open their gates. Crusaders kill anyone, not just combatants and also after a surrender. Also when those knights arent busy killing innocents during their crusades they are murdering pagans to convert them to christianity. i dont understand what you mean to imply with second part of your message.

He still bias always making excuses for crusaders when it goes wrong blaming on tiredness lack of food which is a lies. Or them having issues in their camp but muslim also has issue with people in their camp but won't mention it.

they had been between 2 armies so the cannot scavenge like Saladin. ALso he mentioned lack of food in Acre. And "issue" u claim is mentioned on both sides. U r biased yourself and full of lies.@@pirateblackhawkdown9047
