I'm pretty sure African elephants are notably nicer than Indian elephants. I think that was backwards. The Selucid's elephants were likely smaller and weaker.

Ironic, and kind of sad that trying to save the captives is what got them killed.

Account that the Seleucid elephants were bigger than those of the Ptolemaic wasn't based on evidence.

During when islam was hidden, Omar (ra) was islamophobic and wanted to kill mouhammed (pbuh), someone snitched on where-abouts of Mohammed (pbuh) and so omar (ra) decided to go find him and kill him, but during his venture, someone said to omar "where are you going?" omar responded with "I'm going to go and kill Mohammed", and the same guy told him "did you know that there are 3 members of your family who are Muslims?" omar was shocked and went to his 3 family and and before he opened the door he heard the quran, he was touched in his heart and felt 2 things, peace, and sympathy, he couldn't bring himself to kill his 3 family members so he listened to verses of quran then said "where can I go and become a Muslim?" the family members, said " go to Mohamed and take your shahada" and so as soon as he slammed the door open he took his shahada, not even 2 seconds in, idk what happened after neither too sure, but after he took his shahada and all of the Muslims gathered, he said "why are you hiding?" later he found out why and it is because they are scared since the royals hate mouhammed and Muslims so much, they would kill them, and so omar formed 2 lignes of Muslims and quickly marched thru the roads spreading the word of the almighty, the all knowing, after, he went to the dude who REALLY hated Islam and said the shahada in front of him and ran, as a way to say "f you", and sometime after there march they all headed to medina since they ain't gonna be alive for long if they stayed in mecca. Omar was the last to leave and before he did leave he went to where the Kaaba is and said to thousands of people, I am a Muslim and I will be leaving to go to Medina, come to me if you wish for your mother to cry on your grave" he later ran peacefully, as to why they didn't hunt him because he was a Warrior. Mohammed later said on "if Allah were to assign more messengers, omar would have been one". My name is Omar, and no matter what it is a name that no money can take from. Allah granted me this name, and it is a beautiful name, it also rhymes with "me" which means the moon in arab, and I love space.

Portugal was the best at sea, but not so strong on land. At one time Portugal had the strongest navy and this battle was the beginning of the end for the Portuguese empire.

Raphia is not the largest battle of the Hellenistic era. The Battle of Ipsus (301 BC) was.

10:40 The African elephant is the one that's bigger and stronger. It's was also one of the reasons they were less numerous, they were more difficult to train. Also, presumably they used North African elephants during those times, who were even larger than today's living African elephants.

For the biggest battle in hellenistic history, ipsus in 301 BC was slightly bigger than raphia with 160k men for the former and 140k men for the latter. It's ironic that despite this battle outcome, Ptolemaios 3 was described as the one who started the decline of the ptolemaic egypt while anthiokos will be viewed as one of the greatest in the late hellenistic period but will ultimately fall in the macedonian wars which shifted the power from the greek/macedonian world to the roman world.

  • @Baldricksturnip

They are. There are African forest elephants though, but they would be the size of an Asian elephant. In those times, North African Elephants were used all the way till Roman era, when they went extinct. Those were very large even when compared to regular African ones.

Great videos, I probably don't comment enough. I love your graphics, they really help to explain things. What keeps boggling my mind is the number of men available, the number of them who seem to have had some form of training and the logistics.

    1. This isn’t a larger battle than Ipsus 2. Antiochus first campaign never made it as far as Jerusalem they were blocked at the border. 3. You include a nonexistent siege of Damascus (mentioned in no sources) while missing the Jordan-Arabia campaign which is sourced.

Also just a few years after the end of the first great Chinese civil war (which saw Qin briefly established as ruling dynasty) and immediately prior to the second (the collapse of Qin and the rise of Han). Antiochus, Ptolemy and Qin all took power within a few months of each other.

Antiochus III. Beaten by Egypt early on. Has quite a few victories/successes in the middle of his reign. Gets his ass kicked by Rome near the end of his reign. Quite an up and down career there.
